After much preparation, the Scotland U16 Girls and Boys are gearing up for their first international matches of the season, against Belgium this weekend.

The Girls squad is looking to consolidate on their good start to the season, after successful matches against North of England in early June. They will continue to reinforce tactical situations to outwit the Belgian defence, aiming to score in both the outfield and through penalty corners.

The Boys squad is looking forward to the trip and is hoping to produce some good results after working well together in the preparation for the matches. The weekend sees a number of initial caps in the side as many young players pull on their national colours for the first time.

The boys were playing the current European champions and the girls were playing a poor side who would be incapable of beating many of the district sides, I hope the SHU and others realise this when they are looking at the results. There was a massive improvement on last years results for the boys and the general consensus from all the spectators was that the sides were exceedingly even but that Scotland were taught a lesson on how to finish by the Belguim boys. Hopefully they have taken a lot from this trip and learn from that lesson and use it to turn possession into goals starting next week agaianst the Irish.

Girls U16 and "kicking ass"
Belgian girls, according to their web site are preparing for Europeans in 2006 ie this was Belgium U15 as every player is eligible for 2006.

Scottish side was ostensibly (bar 2) at top age group ie U16.

We should see the results in that light!

Can you not just give praise to both teams. why is scottish hockey so non-supportive and cricitical of their younger sides! Maybe the adult teams would progress better if support was given at a younger age!

well done boys, your performances were exceptional all weekend!
they showed a certain level of comittment and heart that an U16's team hasnt shown in a few years. they were undoubtably the better all-round players with a better game.
sadly, the belgians showed our boys how to finish. they were in the scottish 'd' rarely but always took their chances.
good luck in ireland, lads. get into em and play well!!

Support
I don't think support is the issue - I think that you have to be realistic to achieve. The support I have given and will continue to give to Scottish Hockey is unquestioned.

The results of the girls would appear, on the face of it, to be good results and on the day, the team played better than Belgium. The improvement in results for the boys over the weekend seems unquestionable. In both cases the scores tell little of how the teams played with regard to each teams objectives, goals and gameplan (all of these from individual and team perspectives). A proper analysis of each of these areas has probably yet to be done.

My question is (because the results don't matter in the bigger picture) this:
"are we preparing our youngsters in the correct way for competitive international hockey tournaments by giving them 3 friendlies against a "development team"?"

Discuss!

PS - I do understand that results do matter to individuals and it wasn't meant to belittle the results in any way

U16 Belgium ....
The Belgian Hockey web site is very clear (in French!) A group of 40 boys U16 for European Championships in 2006 is to be reduced to a working group of 25 after the 3 preparation games against Scotland U16 boys.

I'm afraid that the information on the SHU web site was accurate!

congratulations girls! Im a player in one of the older age groups and i know that such a convincing win against the Belgians is hard to come by! whether they were younger or not. The Belgians obviously would pick their best U15 team to play you so you should take full credit for the win.
Glad to see Julie, Phil, Lyndsey and Kirstin are still working with the team, Had the best years with those guys.
