The International Hockey Federation (FIH) will screen its four-weekly television magazine program, BDO WorldHockey Monthly, over the Internet on FieldHockey TV starting today.
“The ability of FIH and FieldHockey TV to broadcast BDO WorldHockey Monthly over the internet free of charge allows hockey fans to watch the programme wherever they are in the world,” FIH President Els van Breda Vriesman said.
“This exciting initiative complements the existing broadcast arrangements currently in place which has the programme screened in more than 50 countries.”
The first episode of BDO WorldHockey Monthly is currently airing in Africa/Middle East, Asia, South America, Australia and New Zealand.
“It is interesting to note that FIH is the first international sporting association to broadcast a video magazine programme across the Internet free of charge as part of an active marketing strategy to promote hockey throughout the world. We are proud that our platform, TV Station In a Box, is being utilised in this truly multimedia approach,” CEO of Narrowstep Inc., Iolo Jones, said.
BDO WorldHockey Monthly will be programmed, as part of the daily TV schedule (four times a day) on www.fieldhockey.tv and will also available on demand. Visitors to the FieldHockey TV website can access the programme by typing "BDO" into the search component of the On Demand section.
The first episode features worldwide news and coverage from recent world-level events, a player focus on leading South African striker Pietee Coetzee, and an interview with new USA high performance director Terry Walsh.
There’s also the latest news from the hockey world and a wrap of the men’s and women’s Sahara WorldHockey Team Rankings.
Since its official launch in October 2003, FieldHockey TV has attracted more than 1.6 million viewers, providing Internet users from around the world with the opportunity to watch the best in field hockey at their own time and leisure. FieldHockey TV brings action from all corners of the world and is free to access.

FIH Rankings
I was watching a lil 30 second vignette on www.worldhockey.org. It was showing the current top 10 rankings. I was not very impressed by the peice.. because the top 10 seems to be all the same countries who seem to hold their position or a relatively consistent position. I went to look on the website further to see how teams were ranked. It seems that the rankings only take into consideration major tournaments. I was wondering why the FIH system does not take into consideration all FIH officially capped matches and tournaments???
The Benefits:
1) More movement in rankings
I think you'd see more movement in the rankings. Teams who cannot make big events can move up the rankings if they can get good results versus better competition series matches.
2) Fielding better teams
Teams would have to field better sides to insure they keep.. or try to better their ranking. If teams are fighting to get into the champions trophy and champions challenge you will see moe heated series matches and teams will field their best players.
3) Lul between big tournaments
They will become more important. Teams will play more games so that they can increase there rankings... that way there will be no "downtime" between big events. It often feels there is 6 months between any important international matches. Now they all are considered "important".
Downside:
1) Takes alot to put together such rankings
Just some discussion about this would be great. We don't have many big tourneys and series and macthes really throughout the year. I think this might be a great way to put some incentive into playing more matches, series and tests

Rankings
Agree with some of Indy's points. Odd to see, Spain, for example to be so low, even though they won the Champion's Trophy tourney last Dec. Seems like recent tourney's don't count for much. Same too for Australia. I think the Olympics + World Cup should account for more points in their system, b/c all countries are striving to put their best forward, for those tourneys.

The countries are ranked over the last four year's performance, so although teams may be winning tournaments now, past tournaments' results also contribute.
