England's women opened up their KT Cup campaign in South Korea with a goalless draw against China, ranked fourth in the world.
The Chinese squad contained 13 Athens Olympians but Danny Kerry's side generated more penalty corners and more shots on goal than their opponents in strength-sapping conditions of high humidity in Seoul.
The closest England came to scoring was when Slough's Alex Scott hit the crossbar in the first 10 minutes, although they were also controversially denied a penalty stroke following a corner late in the match.
Coach Kerry was delighted with the performance.
"We arrived 48 hours ago, crossing eight time zones, and played in 80% humidity and we matched China's physical tempo and created more chances on goal," he said.
"Our discipline and technique in team defence created a fantastic platform from which to consistently attack China and we put into practice many of the areas we have been working on since January.
"We must improve our technical abilities inside the attacking circle and we must be able to repeat such disciplined and intense performances but the team could not have given more today and with that I am very pleased."
