India will be playing at home in its first globally recognised hockey tournament after a nine-year gap, when the Champions Trophy unfolds at the Radhakrishnan stadium here on December 10 this year.
Dennis Meredith, Secretary, Competition Committee and event manager of the International Hockey Federation (FIH) said the facilities at the venue, where the 1996 Champions Trophy was held, were the best in the sub-continent and that it would be a spectator friendly tournament.
Meredith, who inspected the training facilities at the stadium and held a series of meetings with K Jothikumaran, secretary of the Indian Hockey Federation, and officials of the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu, told reporters here last night that players would be extremely happy with the facilities, more so with the flood-lighting.
"It is heartening to note the coordination between the SDATN and the IHF. The turf is excellent and I am sure the players will enjoy getting on to it," he said.
"Looking at the teams in the fray, each match will potentially be like a semi-final or final of a World Cup or Olympics," Meredith, who spent three days here, said.
