Dina Rizzo (Walpole, Mass.) scored the tying goal with two minutes remaining in the game as the USA Field Hockey women's national team salvaged a 3-3 draw against Australia at the National Training Center.

Rizzo's game-tying heroics came after the USA saw a 2-0 second half advantage evaporate into a 3-2 Australian lead with nine minutes remianing inthe game.

"I'm please with the way we played, but I'm honestly disappointed with the result," said USA coach Lee Bodimeade. "I felt we were the best team on the field today. But it was a very good contest. Our plan was to go really hard at the Australians and that's what we did."

After a scoreless first half, the USA got on the scoreboard when Tiffany Snow (Escondido, Calif.) converted a penalty stroke to give the USA a 1-0 lead. The former NCAA Player of the Year at nearby Old Dominion Univ., Snow added a field goal six minutes later to up the USA advantage to 2-0.

The lead was short lived however as Sarah Taylor scored the first of three consecutive Australia goals two minutes later to cut the lead to 2-1. Megan Rivers tied the game for Australia on a field goal in the 58th minute before Ursula Ditton gave Australia its first lead of the game in the 61st minute.

Rizzo's goal in the final minutes gave the USA its first draw with the world's third ranked team since a 2-2 draw in Sydney in 1999. The United States women are currently rated 10th in the international rankings.

The series with Australia continues with game two on Sunday (7 p.m.) with game three scheduled for June 8 and the final game on June 11.

The USA is using the series to continue its preparations for the Rabobank Champions Challenge at Virginia Beach. One of international field hockey's premier events, the tournament will feature the national teams of England, Japan, New Zealand, South Africa, Spain and the USA.

Interestin result
Just a quick glance at the starters(excludes players on bench),tells me the following:

Australia:
Total caps: 800
Avg:71

USA:
Total caps:346
Avg: 31

Hats of to the USA,especially so soon after being thoroughly dominated by NZ even in the 5th test.
Hmmm.

test matches
Try the fact the usa team lost 5 nil after travelling....and the aussie team hasnt been together since athens and has new players, coach in the unit, and still even being jet lagged scored at will. ALSO, rizzo didnt score the last goal, ask her. Try own goal, and the stroke was rubbish as well as the ball played of kate barber's body. In essence none of the usa goals should of counted. But believe they should and after the 4-0 result, it is only going to uglier for the Americans.
what?

Quality
So, just wondering how the quality of the first match was? Was the game a good international match or is Peter P. correct in that the americans are in trouble for the next few games?
Just curious.

Well done USA/ Peter
Peter if the team wears an Ozzie shirt and stands when they play Advance Australia Fair its an aussie team and should play at a commensurate level whether Jetlagged or not...no excuses.
Well Done Lee and US team to be able to come back against one of the top 3 womens teams in the world. After the hard yards against the Kiwis the team must have found some combinations and with one of the better keepers in womens hockey today the US has shown some fortitude. Good Luck in Champions Challenge

Jacko, I think the jet lag comment was a metaphor towards how bad the states are at full strength, taking it the wrong way mate, no one - nor peter made the indication of any sort of excuse. Wouldn't read the comment with already interpreting your meaning.

Not sure if you missed the last part of Peters post where he stated that "in essence .none of the Us goals should have counted ". Still beileve thats what he meant after cooments about Oz jetlag etc. Its a pretty churlish commennt to state at International level that none of tyhe 3 US goals was a good one . Would you concur ?

the last game?
let?s see? yes, the Aussies were still jet-lagged (metaphorically, of course), and Snow?s goal was rubbish (actually, she didn?t really score, just ask her). so in essence, even at full strength the Americans couldn?t keep Australia from scoring at will (apparently they only willed once). it doesn?t get any uglier than that, mate! pass me another Fosters!
