Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force and Carib Magnolias dethroned the defending champions at the 31st annual Petrotrin Six-a-Side Hockey Tournament, at Guaracara Park, Pointe-a-Pierre, two Sundays ago. Both teams played unbeaten.
In the men's division, Defence Force thrashed Petrotrin 5-1 to prevent a successful defence by the hosts. Roger Daniel scored a hattrick for Defence Force, while they also had goals from Eddy O'Brien and Nicholas Wren. Petrotrin's lone item came from Atiba Whittington.
Earlier in the day, Defence Force topped Group "A" in the men's competition after earning ten points in four matches. In the semis, they whipped Fatima 2-0. In Group "B", Petrotrin ran past their three opponents, including Fatima, before pipping Malvern 2-1 in the other semi-final.
Among the women, Magnolias won all their round robin matches to come away with 10 points and the title, while the Defence Force women (six points) had to settle for second place, with the hosts third.
The boys also played a round robin tournament, with Petrotrin (nine points) winning all their games to emerge easy victors, followed by the Paragon youths (six), who lost just one, with Fatima third and Notre Dame fourth.
In the mixed veterans competition, Fatima finished first with four points, with T&T Police (three) second.
Only two teams, T&T Police and Carib, battled in the masters category, and despite drawing twice to finish level on points, Police were awarded the title by virtue of earning more penalty corners.
