A lesson learned for the Black Sticks women's hockey team.

They have been upset 1-nil in the final test against the USA in Wellington, having dominated the five-match series.

New Zealand has still won the series 4-1, having conceded only two goals.

But vice-captain Diana Weavers says coach Ian Rutledge had a few harsh words after the loss.

Weavers says it could have been a Commonwealth Games final and they would have ended up with silver instead of a gold medal.

She says it has shown every game is vital if they want to win medals in major events.

The New Zealand players will now head back to club hockey and begin the build-up to July's Champions Challenge in America.
