Two skippers nabbed a hat-trick each while one could only score a consolation goal and showed the wide gulf between some of the games in the Women’s Premier League played at the Delta Sports Complex yesterday.
Theresians remained atop of the standings and continue their unbeaten streak after they sent Ceylon Sports Club packing to a 10-1 score.
The results showed why there was a need to bridge the gap between sides like these as Theresians’ captain Serene Tan bagged herself a hat-trick to take her side closer to the defensive of their league crown, a haul that began since 2003.
Tan had only praise for her side, claiming a mixture of youth and veterans were the secrets to their success and has helped mold the team to what it has become today.
“Our team comprises a bunch of good older players like Mell (Ann Martens) who is a legend in the game and has been playing for the past two or three decades,” said Tan, who scored a brace in the opening half and landed her hat-trick after the break.
“Plus two or three younger players and we have a good mix. It took us a while to get the right gel but we are getting there,” she said.
Inexperienced CSC, whose players averaged 14-years of age, were no match for their illustrious rivals and crumbled from the on-set, conceding three quick fire goals beginning from the fifth, sixth and seventh minutes to enter the break 5-1 down.
CSC had to rely on their 18-year-old skipper Masdiana Mohd Yusof to latch onto a consolation goal on the stroke of half-time from a penalty corner conversion but that was as close as they came to reducing the arrears further.
“We’ve had a three week break from the game plus many of the players are undergoing exams. Even though we lost today, I am proud of them because they continued to play from the heart,” said Yusof.
“We tried to get into the game and it took us almost 15 minutes to settle down but once we did, I feel we gave our opponents a fair share of the game,” she said.
In the other match of the day, Singapore Recreation Club continued their pursuit of a play-off slot with a 5-0 white-wash over a young Jansenites side with SRC captain Priscilla Koh nabbing herself a hat-trick.
Final scores:
1. Ceylon Sports Club 1 Theresians 10
2. Jansenites 0 Singapore Recreation Club 5
