TWENTY hockey players were named for a National squad, yesterday, to prepare for the Pan American Indoor Championships billed for Ontario, Canada in December.

The Guyana Hockey Board of Control selected the players after two days of trials on Monday and Tuesday at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, involving some 45 players.

They are: Dexter Barry, Jerazeno Bell, Anthony Cole, Marvin Dannett, Azrad DeAbreu, Alan Fernandes, Carl Garraway, Alex Gouveia, Devin Hooper, Mark King, Christopher Low-Koan, Devin Munroe, Shane Samuels, Dwayne Scott, Orlando Semple, Askofu Simon, Aderemi Simon, Dwight Solomon, Kevin Spencer and Damon Woodrooffe.

The coach is former National Under-21 player Timothy McIntosh who played club hockey in Germany for six yeas from 1993.

McIntosh is now playing for Everest Hikers but gave up his place to coach the team as Guyana enter the Pan American Indoor championships for the first time.

In fact, the squad is the first national squad called in 12 years; the last one participated in the Central America & Caribbean (CAC) Games hosted by Puerto Rico in 1993, in which the team placed fifth.

Therefore most of the players are new on the National grid, with Bell, Fernandes, King, Hooper, Woodrooffe and Barry being among the ones that wore the National colours before now.

However, some players participated on the international level in club tournaments, the last one being hosted by Guyana last year.

McIntosh is confident that the players will give a good account of themselves.

?The team has very good chances. In the Diamond Mineral Water international tournament, they matched skills with the best from Trinidad & Tobago and Canada. It was unfortunate that they lost to Canada in the final. The potential is clearly there.?

He, however, acknowledged that there was not a lot of indoor games here, so the hockey board would aim for at least one four-nation tournament involving Barbados, Trinidad & Tobago, Venezuela and Guyana.

?It is either they come here or we go. One way or the other, we will try to have such a warm-up tournament.?

Best of Canada
"they matched skills with the best from Trinidad & Tobago and Canada"

They might have matched skills with the best from TT, but to say that they played with the best from Canada.....now that's what I call I'd call stretching your imagination!

This team will be lucky if they score against Canada, and Canada doesn't score 15 or more....

I at least hope we enter the outdoor competitions eg CAC games nest year and Pan Am cup..............TO READER: in the indoor in Guyana the Everest team held their own and gave a good performance in the final vs the canadian club team........ as u said though the international team is a different level....... we will see how they perform.

Good news
This is very good news for the region. Hope you guys can give a good showing after such a long absence. Revdog... you are noticiably absent??? expected to see your name, even if it was just as coach. And what about Stephen? Alan, continue to fight the good fight! I'm going to try my best to be there with you, but you know how the old bones get...

Old bones
Peong, I decided to rest my old bones man. Couldn't commit the time. Glad to hear you are still making a try for it though. If I have any change left in the pocket at the end of the year I may even come up and have a look.

I am hoping to go with my club side to the Pan Am Club Championships in Mexico instead.

Cheers

The team that came down to Guyana had five of the players selected on the Canada World Games indoor team. I think the statement made in the article was a fair one, donīt you think? Really...donīt you THINK??

If Reader is suggesting that (Canada's goals) - (Guyana's goals) >= 15, I'd be willing to take on a friendly wager. I'm willing to bet Mr./Ms. Reader has never seen the Guyana players. And just about anyone who has seen both sides of the equation would disagree and more likely support (Canada's goals) - (Guyana's goal) < 15.

Good luck to the GT team and we gon get de folks out to support y'all in December.

Later.

guyana is ready for anyone
We all know canada is a very strong team, and they will be the team to beat come december,as well as the U.S. . But that doesn't bother us at all ,we have nothing to lose but all to gain from this tournament come december. We are clearly the underdogs coming into this tournament. But we love it that way, we love to be the underdogs, cause no one like's to get beat by the undredogs. I think it will be a great tournament for all the teams and i wish them all the best of luck including us Guyana. LOOK OUT FOR THE GT BAD BOYS IN DECEMBER YALL.
