U21 Men?s coach Craig Parnham has selected a 16-strong squad for his first overseas excursion with his new charges in a series of friendly matches against Belgium?s U21 men.

The squad mixes regulars from last season?s line up with newcomers making the step up from the U18s and some who are being considered for both squads.

Derek Salmond (Inverleith) and Michael Christie (Kelburne) return to U21 duty following their call up to the senior squad where they gained 3 caps each in the recent tour to Canada.

Two of the squad who were originally selected have since been ruled out for the trip; Ross Stott (Dundee Wanderers) has exam commitments while Colin McIver is out through injury.

Coach Craig Parnham said; "We are really looking forward to this training camp and the matches against the Belgian team. We have a number of young guys in the squad and are preparing for our long-term future, particularly for the Europeans in Gibraltar next year. I am pleased with the composition of the squad as the younger players are balanced by some of our older athletes who can offer a bit more experience. This is a good opportunity for the younger players to familiarise themselves with the environment at U21 level and for the squad to gel.

On their Belgian opposition Parnham commented: "The Belgian team is a strong team but, like us, they are in a transitional phase with a number of their squad having moved up to the senior level. However, they are a bit further on in terms of their development as they are preparing for the Junior World Cup later this year. There should be some very good competitive games over the course of the weekend."

my post wasn't posted though it didn't have any bad words so to say. Had written comment on the squad so think that this site is not as impartial as it was.
I plan to be a coach in my spare time for the sake of my em, fitness. No beer belly yet and I run like a giraffe which I think could help me be in senior squads in future.
Now looking forward to the day performance manager and friends are gone. Shame for the others outside capital equally as below average not in this squad. Shame altogether.

good game
8-1, good game. All good practice for the pur wee laddies tho, good on the performance director and coaches. As long as they all have a nice meal out at the end of the season, beer belly brigade. Nepotism should be looked at by someone independent. I'm better than at least one of these guys and that's being in my 20's without much coaching.

Don't talk in riddles - if you have something to say then say it!

Sounds like sour grapes to me with a touch of the "wanted to be but couldn't be bothered to get off my ass to do it!"

The attitude you portray in your posting says it all.

Good game
The 8-1 game was a lot better performance than the previous day but basic errors were punished by good Belgian counter attacks, the 4-2 result on sunday showed the progress the squad has made as the Belgians were completely dominated and but for another 3 soft goals the squad would have got its first result of the trip and looked like doing it at 1-0 up at half time. This was indeed a worthwhile trip and the youngsters now know what is expected of them in order to compete at this level. Bring on Paris.

well if ur better put ur name forward and the coaches can hav a look at ur 'natural ability'
the squad is geared towards the euro's next year, the boys havent had alot of time to gel yet, and the trip i feel was maybe abit to soon.
we played some really good hockey when away but at times the ability to work as a team lacked, but that is purely down to lack of preperation time.

What are you talking about?
For Scotland to loose every game by such a margin means they are rubbish.
And you are saying this is an improvement?

To lose every game to a team that is preparing for the world cup in just over a month is hardly surprising for a teams first 3 games together, but to completely outplay them in the third game is an impressive improvement and if that continues there will be no doubts about scotland winning european b next year and rightfully regaining their place in A division. This progress has all been done without Stevie Dick who will come back into the squad next year for the tournament, so to say that scotland is rubbish shows why the hunter will soon become the hunted, cause you know naught!!

Please remind me which game it was that Scotland "completely outplayed" Belgium? Was it the one that they lost 4-2? I would have thought that if you "completely outplayed" a team you would end up winning the match.

You would end up winning the game, but by conceding 3 very soft scrappy goals, despite being outplayed the result was very different to perhaps what it should have been. Of course you must only play in games where the team that deserves to win does indeed win, cause thats what always happens in sport isn't it?!

dear that was the point. As for "player", just as well you're so damn good as your spelling stinks. Gelling? too soon? why don't you stop writing pish and go outside and practice, you need it. The weather won't have been quite right either. My natural ability shines in many things and I'm not at all sour as I do another sport as well. Makes me even more amazed at what lemmings are getting trips for the country when they are not cut out for it. Someone else who is missing out should be the one complaining but it's up to them to raise it. Hunter I totally agree. Wonder what a soft goal is, one they didn't mean perhaps. I'm going for level 1 course in next few years, plenty of time given ages of people in charge. Can't wait to tell my kids that I'm gonna get them in the team, wait and see.

Are you saying that they cheated the goals. That's the only way the Belgians didn't deserve to win. Why don't you stop being lickspittle and stop making incredible predictions about a team that's been drubbed. Roll on the teams of the future without coaches who can't see past their own.

Of course the Belgians won fair and square how can you debate that with the reults like that, but in the final game they were outplayed by a team playing only its third every game together and its third in three days without a full compliment of players, and if they are ready for the world cup then by the time the next under 21 competition comes around this scotland team should be in good shape unless it picks up a few more of the "cant be bothered" crew who are in higher numbers than players actually in the squad at this moment in time. Time to stop slagging off from the sidelines and actually put some work into the development of Scottish hockey.

A "should have been" is not a result. Scotland were not good enough to stop the Belgiums scoring. It dosent matter if its a soft goal or a screamer. A goal is a goal.

They don't give out gold medals to the them that "should have" won, they give them to the team that actually wins.

The truth
Right just to clear something up about the trip to belgium. We lost and it wasn't pretty. The first two games were realy tough and got hammered but in the third game we put in a better performance. Now I know we lost but there are only 3 guys from last years team who actualy have the U-21 experience and it was a good development weekend for the U-18s who have come in (except MC who was awesome).

I think they main point is that we are on the way up. Craig Parnham is an awesone coach and I have learnt more in that weekend than in any other training sessions. I believe there will be changes and I would hope people wil respect this.

It appears that very few of you were actually there so as far as I'm concerned p*ss off as you don't know what you're talking about. Some of you are too quick to judge. If you haven't played at international level then you won't know what I'm talking about. Quit bi*chin about it and try and help or support the team.

dudes...
the improvement that the squad showed in those three games isnt to be overlooked by chumps slagging off the team for some admittedly bad results... the third game was a great game by the team, and we regognise that that is a standard that we will set as our minimum. Okay, we lost, but the style we played for a geat majority of the game shows that the squad (with some more work) has an enormous amount of potential to succeed in future competition.

If people slag us off for our first three games together all they will do is knock the confidense out of the squad and deflate the moral of the squad. Its important that we look forward to the upcoming matches in france, manchester and holland as a chance to improve further, and not as a event where we need to silence ill founded and possibly ill motivated criticism from randoms on a web forum! Personally it would have been great to win, or have better score lines, but if we go to france and loose in the same way, but improve in a similar fashion or to the same extent then we will still have achieved something for the benefit of scottish hockey.

I'm not laying the ground for another series of defeats by the way, mearly trying to point out that there is a great deal in these friendly games that we have lined up more important than the results.... comments like "they don't give medals to teams that should have won" are missing the point... there were no medals at stake, its a chance for us to work out what works, who works where with whom, and our strengths and weaknesses as a squad.

enough.

i've lost my shoe laces...

The 3rd Game
Its very common that in a 3 match series where one team is up 2-0 that the losing team will have a improved result or even win the final match.

This is because the dominat team does not have as much to play for and suffers from a decrease in motivation while the lesser team is still trying very hard to not suffer a 3-0 defeat. The dominate team would also play reserves/fringe players in such a match.

Don't get too excited about your performance in the 3rd game. Get back on the training field and practice.

Hunter, are you even a international athlete? Were you even there? I bet you are just one of the players who thinks there good and should be in this set up, but in actual fact you are not and because of this are jealous of the playrers in the set up so you decide to slag the system!

You should really get a life!

big move?
I hear on th grape vine that Granges Hitman Fergus Dunne is on the move.....? is this true, who could it be, maybe edinburgh uni or inverlieth?

If he could clear this matter up that would be great!

Also what do we think about the move, why would he want to move to a club below him, maybe they can offer " same things ", maybe its because the " banter " is good.

The president of edinburgh uni commented on this matter yesterday, the words or should i say word that he said was "sick".

With such a high profile striker moving, maybe this will start a new era for either inverleith or edinburgh uni.
