Scotland: Simpson looks to lead Giffnock to glory There are 28 comments on this articlex28

Rhona Simpson, the Olympian with her trademark saltire-adorned knee brace, has seen it and done it all round the world with both Scotland and Great Britain. Now, she has achieved another milestone by leading Giffnock to their first Shepherd and Wedderburn Scottish Cup final, against league champions, Bonagrass Grove, at Peffermill today.
Although Giffnock are already guaranteed their place in next season's European Cup-winners' Cup, they have never before won silverware at this level. However, despite being novices in the big occasion, Simpson's squad will certainly not be overawed.
They have more than held their own in the top flight this season, being the only side to have inflicted defeat on the Tayside club. "The feeling in the club is very positive," she said. "I think it will be a very open game. Both teams like attacking and I believe there will be chances at both ends, so it could be very exciting."
The men's final, too, features two sides that like to attack. Kelburne, the league champions, booked their passage in the replayed semi-final against Grange on Thursday night. Typically, they had to pull themselves out of a 3-1 deficit midway through the second half, before emerging as 5-3 victors.
Two Mark Ralph drag-flicks at penalty corners levelled the scores, before Chris Trainer put his side ahead with a reverse stick shot and Ross McPherson put the icing on the cake.
The result gave Western Wildcats the remaining European place for next season, but the Auchenhowie squad will want to finish the season with some silverware. "We know it will be a tough game as the results between us have been so close," said Vishal Marwaha, the Western captain. "We missed out on the league, so we are even more determined to end the season on a high by retaining the cup."

Giffnock were absolutely trounced on Saturday. I can't believe that people were touting them for victory. Beating Grove once doesn't mean that they will beat them regularly and whilst they should be congratulated on a good season (Best in Glasgow!) they do not have the quality in depth of the Grove side which fielded some great players. Cheryl Valentine was fantastic, Vikki Bunce, when receiving the ball was electrifying and the overall quality was evident. Grove defence looks a little rattled at times and a few passes astray by gneral quality. Also great to see Leigh Fawcett and Nikki Kydd playing, both U21/U18 internationalists with a bright future, well done all, and well done Giffnock for a great season, hopefully it will continue in Europe next year!

PS Is this the end of the line for Western? Reckon if they are not careful they will definitely slip behind Grange and potentally MIM who have a great young side.

Well done Giffnock, lets not forget it was their first cup final. And the transformation the club has gone through in the last few years is astounding. It wasn't long ago that all the hutchie girls went to Western and not their FP club. Simmy changed it round! WELL DONE!

West is best.......
I think some of your comments are a wee bit harsh!
The scoreline may look like Giffnock were trounced but it in fact flattered Grove. Don't get me wrong Grove deserved to win, but Giffnock played some good hockey. By the way Giffnock also have some young players who handled the occasion very well.

I think that it is the end of Western, they can no longer dictate to SHU boo hoo!

Well done to Grove from a Giffnock supporter and good luck to you in Europe

Giffnock game
As a neutral, have to agree - Grove were miles better than Giffnock in the second half especially - all the teams have a long way to go to knock this Grove team off the top.

Good luck to both teams in Europe

Grove no 3 is Vikki Bunce - 12 GB Caps (age 21) numerous Scottish. Also other GB inetrnationals past & present on show - Simmie, Ali Ramsay, Sue (all retired), clements, Valentine, Carroll present in last year's squad.

Generally, not bad for Scottish hockey!

Amy Hislop
She did nothing when she came on, believe me - I saw her jog off the pitch to be subbed and had not even realised she was on the pitch. She has a lot of work to do and has not impressed us at all this season.

Keep working hard Giffnock - your time will come

WANTABEES
Giffnock have to many wannabees fair enough making the national scene but the prance around none more so than kilpatrick who spends more time on the floor than her feet. take a note fraser a has been still good enough for certain levels but an excellent allrounder kilpatrick more a long jumper. where as u have sullivan, hislop, briely who have to be honest failed to shine, where as mim and grove have talent through the youth

cup final
Re PEDs comments - sullivan, hyslop and brierley ARE young! Unless of course you are old if you are over 21!! Of course, Kaz and Kimi being under 18 maybe fit into that category!! Also, there is no point in having good players unless they can use their flair AND fit into your system! Horses for courses etc! Look at the way Grove utilise their players - and how it works!!

Alright Darlin'
“she’s fabulous, she can run and pass and hit the ball nearly as well as 12 year old boy, oh but she’s not as good as her, she can flick the ball like a third division player in the mens league” Give us a break girls it’s painful, stop with the sport already, your just not very good at it. You’ll go a lot further in life if you take a leaf from the lovely Delia’s book, watch men play sport and learn to make the perfect poached egg.

Where does that comment fit in? We're not trying to compare women to men, if you've got nothing relevant to say don't say anything. Let's be honest though, the men's final was poor so you've not got much to shout about so maybe better you channel your negativity to training. Giffnock have some good younger players coming through but at the moment Grove with the likes of Valentine and Bunce leading the field with Clement, Carroll, Kidd, Fawcett among the rest are superb.

Hyslop
Hyslop is a great player who deserves much more pitch time ahead of other players for sure.

When you get subbed for players who do not have the development potential of you as a player the confidence gets knocked.

Hyssie is great!

Get a life.......why are you having a go at Kimi (not Kimmi) As far as I remember Kimi was only on the pitch for 10 maybe 15 mins, was Amy on for the rest of the time or was she subbed for someone else? Did you know that Kimi is only 16 years old and would be appalled if she were being compared with Amy who she has nothing but respect for. As it happens the whole of the Giffnock team participated in the match including injured Gibby who played the last 2mins. So Pedro think before you type!

subbing!
I agree with the other Giffy fan, Amy is a good player and she has had to deal with some issues this season but I would have thought it would only make her more determined to show what she is capable of. As for your comments about being subbed for players who do not have the development potential as her, well thats just nasty. The players don't sub themselves and certainly don't feel they get "one up" on another player when they are on the pitch for longer. As far as I can see that whole team has developed this season so don't take your irk out on them!

Sorry if you felt I was having a go at Kimi, I was just trying to point out that Amy got little pitch time on Sat compared to other players. I did know that Kimi was only 16 but I still thought that you would play your better players in a cup final. I am sure that Kimi will soon be as just as good as the likes of Amy.

Couldnt agree more! Kimi is one of the outstanding young talents in the game, she deserves credit for her attitude- topics like this- comparing a 16 year old to a 22 year old does not help. Kimi could be an amazing player one day, just give her a chance!

Yes they got beat 6-1 but as the Grove coach was saying after the game, its where the experience of the Grove team came in. This was Giffnocks first ever cup final and it was great to see them there.
As for the pitch time, Rhona made sure everyone got on the pitch, which is rather difficult when shes trying to play the game herself. Giffnock have nothing but a good future to look forward to. Theres not many other clubs around that have the youth Giffnock have, with the average age in the early 20's. Not even Grove, who are going to have to think about there back line in the next couple of seasons.
Best of luck to the 'Nock' for next season, finally showed you are the best team in the west!

Nobody at giffnock doubts Amy's potential! Every player has potential so to dismiss others as not having the same developmental potential is unfair. Who would you take off to put her on?!!!!

i think u r also forgetting that rhona managed to get a further 13 players to the finals as thew giffnock a team were playing in the plate
i think that having 2 teams in the finals in a bigger achivment that winning just 1 even if it was a good win. Fair enuf giff nok lost ( twice) but they managed to get around 30 players on the pitch in both the cup and plate fianls put together and thats a bigger achivment than any other team ( including the men) that were there on the day. the club is fairly new and has a great future. ( well reserve legue may cause problems) but all players and coaches deserve a pat on the back for last season, well done !
