Annadale's David Smyth has returned to Ireland's squad for a tri-nations event against Canada and Italy after an 18-month absence.
Smyth, who has won 46 caps, has been absent because of work and other commitments but has been included in coach Dave Passmore's 17-man squad after impressing in the All Ireland Club Championships last weekend where his club finished second.
"David demonstrated his talent in Cork last weekend and I am delighted he has returned the squad," said Passmore.
"He is technically very able and will give the Irish team different dimensions to our game in terms of how we can attack from the back line."
Ireland play Italy on May 27 and Canada on May 29, both at Garryduff Sports Club, Rochestown, Cork.
Full squad: W Bateman (gk), J Black, M Black, D Eakins, S Nicholson (Cork Harlequins); P Brown, M Irwin (Instonians); K Burns, D Hobbs (Cork C of I); S Butler, J Sherriff (Dragons, Belgium); T Cockram, M Raphael (Lisnagarvey); G Elliott (Pembroke Wanderers); C Henderson (gk, Corinthians); G Shaw, D Smyth (Annadale).

Availability
Interesting selection. No Waring after receiving player of the tournament at the Club Championships. No Barbour. Is Jackson unavailable? And Jermyn?
From the younger brigade - no Gormley, no Lewers, no Gleghorne.
And does this signal the end of Nigel Henderson's international career?
A lot of class players around at the moment for Passmore to mould into a decent team.

well done Dave def deserved.
to youngster i agree to a point but if you had seen the club championships you would have seen fantastic performances form David only better by Waring and Lutton who were both out standing, and not that young, experience plays a huge part back there in defence

Just to make it clear Waring is in the squad for the tournament for Cork matches. It is in fact an eighteen man squad and he is the eighteenth man !!

'One of the best players ireland has produced'....i hardly think so!
At best, an average defender who performs within a very average club side. While he stays at the home of the bottlers his game isn't likely to improve much either.
Very much doubt whether Ireland will be any better off for having Smith back in their squad...should have gone for youth Mr Passmore.

i agree but the players i said are all fairly attacking. Yeh Dave is a class player. Def derserved a place on the team and good luck to him. Hopefully a long and successful career as an Irish International. good to see more productive comments its really harmful all the criticising that goes on. We shud get behind our players. Proud to be IRISH

Irish squads
Check out the ulster hockey website www.ulsterhockey.com It has the full press release detailing the squad selection and the squads for the individual internationals, you'll see that a look of the above mentioned players are included and reasons why others aren't. It is a good publication

Dead on
Have taken Barney's advice and have to say that Passmore seems to have his head screwed on and looking at all his options with most players being looked at against Italy.
Too often Ireland field their best players and get great results in the build up and then fail at the crucial time. Italy could be one of the teams in contention for the B title so why play the best group of players in every match?!
I also read the press release about the development squad. Don't agree with all the choices but do agree with this model in principle. At last someone in Irish hockey is shaking things up. Wouldn't like to think how much time it has taken to get past all the committees.

TO FACTS
your comment is laughable, dave smyth is the best defender in ireland by quite a long way in my opinion, hes also a really dead-on guy so why dont you get behind the irish team and stop your jealousy and show some respect because we need people like dave to be playing if irish hockey is to move forward.

Who are these younger players you mention??
I've looked through the full squads for the Italy matches in Dublin and there seems to be lots of young players involved through the week (Gormley, Nicholson, Robb, Maguire, Magee) - all under 22 or so). I still don't see many close to the likes of Smyth, Brown, Waring, Black.........
Come on - make your comments but back them up with some names......or are you suggesting there should be some.

I have heard a rumour smyth (cisseroll) is planning to return to loughborough to further his playing carreer playing alongside his role model, mentor and hero. Easily one of the best players in Ireland. He should form the backbone of the irish team alongside cool head gleghorne- the 2nd best player in ireland behind cisseroll. Best of luck to the both of you idiots.

once again i must make a simple observation-gleghorne should be nowhere near that irish squad.i'm not trying to knock down one of our younger players, indeed lewers, nicholson and cockram deserve respect- they have skill, pace and a first touch- but gleghorne is just simply over-rated.

Posting under an anonymous name is one thing but posting under someone else's name (Ronny Smyth) is bang out of order....especially to criticise the people that give hockey some much needed coverage AGAIN!
