Tupper should be on the team. He is by far one of the best up and coming junior players and should have got the call for the tour.

Keep up the good work Tupper - you are still my hero!

Yes, when he isn't injured, Gubbar is world class...

Shorts belong
While Gubbar is an excellent player, has he ever gotten his citizenship? That's why he wasn't at the Olympic Qualifier. As for the Shorts, they are certainly in the top half of the squad and there would be room for Gubbar if healthy and Canadian. There's room for all players of that calibre, even in the rebuilding (again) that seems to be taking place.

Canada need to pick more Sikhs like Gubbar in their team - you know the people with the big turbans who dance to Bhangra music.
Jeewanjot singh is in and that is a good sign. If we pick more Sikhs, Canada can win a medal at Beijing -- it has brilliant coaching and training facilities, now it needs skillful players and there are no more skilful players than Canadian Sikhs.

And now a song:
Oh Oh Punjab Punjab
Oh Oh Dhillon Dhillon
Oh Oh Saini Saini
Oh Bajwa Bajwa
Let's Dance some Bhangra
Let's win Canadaaa!

If Canada can barely beat the UK's leftovers (Scotland) 2-1 in the last test in a 4 match series with two of the best Scots not playing. What will the score be like in the England???

Useful Comments
Good Job "Maple Leaf Punjabi" and all the other unintelligent idiots that waste everybody's time by putting bad jokes on this web site. It's really ridiculous that idiots write stuff about religions, turbans and the color of peoples skin in here. I know it's a joke, but its been the same jokes over and over for years. Other countries seem to use this web site as a useful tool, but yet Canada's threads are often followed by such silly comments. What does that say about Canada's hockey community? There are some interesting and useful perspectives here... Let's stick to that!

Club names should be there
Memo to Field Hockey Canada:

I feel, it would look a lot better if a player's club was identified, in addition to the city of residence.
Example: R. Hildreth - Hawks (Vancouver).
At the recent Scotland Series in Vancouver. The game program listed the Scots with their clubs, while the Canucks' just a city....This kind of reinforces that there is no club system or if there is one it doesn't count for much.
If we want to promote our sport in Canada, this is a good way to send a message.

C'mon man !!!

I made my post not in jest but to highlight the fact that Canada need moe Sikhs involved
in the game. The level of participation in Sikh community is not high and Canada needs to tap the talent that exists there in plenty.

Get real. It is imperative that the coaching staff continues to select players based on skill and not for any other reason (race, age religion etc). If there are any Sikh players that have the skill and determination to make the grade, I am sure that they would already be identified and included in the "talent pool". Perhaps these "diamonds in the rough" should try getting out of bed in the morning instead of lounging around and complaining while sucking back on sour grapes. Who are these "wanna be's?"

"wanna be's"
There are plenty of athletes not involved who are definately not your so called "wanna be's". You have to look no further than India Club, where young players such as Kevin Johal and Jay Takar are skilled and extemely fit. They are amoung the top ten players in the Vancouver League and show it each year as they run past the opposition with great speed while working very hard in defense. Why are they no longer involved in the program?!? If Canadian Field Hockey wants to improve it needs to involve skilled athletes like these guys.

You're not very realistic.

How long did it take for the coaching staff to wake up and realise Gubbar deserved to be in the team ?
Far too long.....

I fear the same mistake will be made with respect to players like Sharinder Singh Sodhi
and Baldeep Singh Bollia.

Seriously man, is this a joke?? Jai and Kevin running past the opposition with great speed? Why are they not in the program? I'll tell you why, because Jai was cut from the Junior National team last year because he could barely run a ten on the beep test(remember he was supposed to be a leader on the team) and Kevin was let go because he has absolutely zero impact on matches. He's a forward with minimal dribbling skill, and no shot/scoring touch...that's why they are not in the program. Jai could have been a good player but he didn't put the hard work in when it was needed.

I agree Gubbar is a good player, but what we have to remember here is this little thing called 'citizenship'. Gubbar was useless to Canada because he never became a citizen. Now I don't know who Sharinder and Baldeep are, but if they are not citizens, then there is no point in having this discussion.
PS. Where do those guys play, are they in Vancouver League?

If they wanted the hockey body could have helped fast track Gubbar's and anybody else's papers for citicenship, assuming the players start the process.

Just wondering why it didn't happen?

re:gubbar
Gubbar is an end of an era. Everyone out their please let it go. He has moved on with his life. He is not only banged up from his injuries but he now doesn't see Hockey as the future for him especially in a country like Canada. He has moved on with his life, he is working and making $$$$ to earn a living, he knows hockey wasn't gonna bring in much $$$$ to earn a proper decent living. Don't be surprised though if you seem him play for rec in a club. No doubt though, his national career is done before it ever began even though Canada could have used his talent.

Canada since Sydney
To Wasimuddin:

Yes the overall standard of the team has dropped. The group leading up to Sydney had stayed together for years+had some very strong athletes. Given the numbers playing now, the chances of those two key demographics coming together again any time soon is unlikely. Also, because we were competitive guys might have stayed with the program longer. People may forget that it is a real sacrifice to commit to the national program, for the years it takes to mould a side. In the major hockey playing countries there is more compensation, semi-professional clubs etc.
There was more competition to get into the side as well. There isn't the flow of strong players coming out of Ontario any more, so BC guys are getting most of the spots.
Ouch

Well those are disappointing results to end the tour. A couple games of "9-man defense" against England, a tie against Italy, and a loss to Ireland. This team has a lot of work to do.....
