The final competition of the 2004/05 hockey season got underway on Sunday with the preliminary round of the K.O. competition. The game saw Sliema Hs finally edge out White Hart 4-3 in a thrilling game. Sliema will now face Rabat in Sunday?s second semi-final. The first semi-final is between The Hunters? Tower Restaurant and Poiatti Qormi.

The gap hardly reflected the 14 point gap that separated the two teams in the League table. To be fair, White Hart caused quite a few problems to Sliema this year. They beat them in the Challenge Cup, drew one game in the League and only lost 2-1 and 2-0 in the other two League matches. They were also coming from their first victory of the season as they had beaten Poiatti Qormi in their final league game.Their moral was high and only got better as they raced into a 2-0 goal lead inside the first twenty minutes. Luke Borg Costanzi and Karl Tua, two of their brightest prospects, got the goals. Until then Sliema, depleted through suspensions and injuries, were almost inexistent despite their early pressure. However, they pulled together and marshaled by Michael Caruana Smith in midfield they started to claw themselves back into the game.

A good move down the right saw Keith Vella conclude and pull one back and before the half was over veteran Ray Bezzina equalised after a fine individual move. The two teams were back were they started, on level terms. The game was being played at a good rhythm despite the heat and the second half started at the same pace. Sliema buoyed by their comeback pressed forward and took the lead through Frithjof Langelotz. White Hart were not going to sit down so easily and from their next short corner, barely two minutes later; they were back on level terms.

The game then moved from one end to the other and the two goalkeepers, Mallia for Sliema and White Hart?s Galea, were made to earn their wages. Mallia blocked out White Hart?s attempts from short corners while Galea distinguished himself notably with a double save off Bezzina and Langelotz. The game seemed destined for extra time when from what was to be Sliema?s final short corner, Bezzina received from Caruana Smith and fired in what was to be the winner.

U-15

The weekend had started on good note for Sliema Hs when their U-15 side clinched the title when they beat Poiatti Qormi 4-1. Played in front of what for the junior competitions was a bumper crowd, the game was played in an excellent spirit by both sides. Led by coach Manuel Imbroll and Asst. Coach Pierre George, this squad first participated in the HAM competitions last year when they finished last in the U-14 category. In one year they have made a notable improvement and this year topped the table. On Saturday their scorers were captain Charlene Darmanin, two came from vice-captain Lukas Plaehn and Shaun Grima scored the last goal. The rest of the squad was made up of Ludwig Cole, Luke Chircop, Kathleen Mifsud, Maurizio Scicluna, Ryan Dalli, Ryan George and Rebecca Mifsud. (A photo of the team is attached).

junior report
i saw the juniors report in the times. It was very nice and surely encourages our young ones.
i think that we, the clubs, have to make a point and try and help out in the reporting of these matches so as to promote these matches.
obviously, the person reporting the senior matches, cannot come over for these

it is very encouraging for a young player to see his name in the newspaper or a photo.
something that next year we surely have to improve.

young starts vs Qormi
Although this was quite a balanced match young stars won right at the end i think about 5 mins. before the end. A freak goal totally put the Qormi defence off mark.
The match, although, hampered by a whole contraversy between the qormi press and one of the umpires was quite calm.
The game reached its low when in the evening it was announced that David Evans fracture his ankle . I sincerely wish David a quick return to action.
Match report:
After barely a few minutes to the start of the game and Mark Camilleri scored from a short corner.
There was little action until Qormi got a short corner and a master minded push tricked James Mizzi in goal. Well actually, Philip Magri mis hit and totally put the goalie off.
The second half was nothing big to comment only for the above mentioned accident.
But then with a few minutes to go a free hit was awarded to young stars. The ball hit someones stick and the ball rolled at the top corner of the post.
AFter the game the Qormi defenders were suggesting that no yellow player touched the game but who could confirm. Goal is to stand WEll done yellows.
The last action of the match, came from Nonetheless, Frank Bugeja who after a very quite game had a short corner.
Tensions were high. Everyone thought the ball was going in. But then at the last moment Mizzi dived in to splendid save.
Some might say the ball could have gone out. Well i think otherwise. WEll done goalie.
The only other think to note that during a good counter act, Qormi almost scored was it not for a feet. it seemed that the ball was destined for goal.
I cannot comment because i was near that area,
All in all it was a good game and ended Qormi's campaign for this year. I think they have done well.
Let us look forward for next weekend when Rabat meet against foreign opposition. Good luck and make us proud.

off i go.

It is amazing how Dr Crockford is moving around. He's been discussing issues with various members of other clubs with the aim to get rid of the current president of the association. He's trying to make lots of pubblicity to show that he's the right person for the role. It's amazing how Dr Crockford only started realising what needs to be done in 2005 and never before.

It seems that some clubs are giving him support. But be aware for he is the kind of person that has always moved ahead for his own interest. What happened during this season clearly shows that when things matter most it is his club that comes first and not hockey.

The association needs a president who has hockey as a priority, a person who has integrity and the game first and foremost. Dr Crockford certainly lacks these qualities!

Reply To The Freak Called Beware
I know everyone deserves his opinion but i think your opinion about ian is completly wrong. He loves hockey and is one of the people who is working his balls off to prepare for rabat's forthcoming tournament. Why don't you and all the others so called critics learn to give praise as well and not only trying to put every other club member down.

Gd Luck to rabat for the tournament.
Adios

RABAT EUROPEAN HOCKEY TOURNAMENT.
congratulations to all involved in this tournament. It was something really entertaining. A real hockey feast.
It has been long since such an event. I would safely say that this year i enjoyed myself more than last year.
Even the ball boys found it really interesting. Such kind of events promote our game and pulls more poeple to our complex.

Another well done goes to Qormi for the youth festival. It was really nice to see all the children from different teams mingling together.

Such events tent me to come back into organizing.
I realise how much more entertaining it is to come watch/organanize such events than just playing.

A small comment goes on Dr. Ian crockford. Although, myself and him see hockey from a different view, past comments on this site are not fair.

His input in the european tournament was a heavy weight. He really loves the game and this was shown with his commitment for the tournament.

Let us give him a chance to answer back or at least delete comments which attacke Dr.Crockford personally.

Frank, was there need to descibe Crocky's contribution to the tournament as "heavy weight"?!!!!! He is trying to diet after all!!!! :-)
Seriously well done to all for this year's tournament. I think even the standard of the two (and to some extent even Rabat) top teams was very good. Let's all give a repeat show in Septmeber.
