Despite the financial constraints that our national men's hockey team faces it remains positive of an impressive outing at the Arafura Games in Darwin, Australia next month.

Coach, Kevin Fraser said that the 18-member team was looking forward to the games and had been preparing well.

"We have just confirmed our final team that will make the tour and players have been training ever since," Fraser said.

The initial 26-member squad was trimmed down to 18 players along with two officials who will take the team to the games."

He said because there had not been much financial support, players had agreed to meet 50 per cent of the their travelling costs.

"With levels of commitments as such, there is no problem in getting gold at the meet because players have clearly mapped out their goals," Fraser said.

Meanwhile, the women's team has reduced its number after three of its players pulled out of the tour because of personal reasons.

Team manager Peter Thaggard said that only 15 players would travel for the meet with two team officials.

The Arafura Games also serves as a build up to the Oceania qualifiers for the World Cup in which Fiji will host the Olympic gold medallist Australian team.

Men's: Manager: David Bennin, Coach: Kevin Fraser Philip Thaggard, Joseph Varea, Reginald Eastgate, George Sela, Gavin Thaggard, Harry Heritage, Derrick Robinson, Amasai Batabua, Shaun Corrie, Adrian Lal, Hector Smith, Jean Bentley (captain), Richard Nath, Lloyd Williams, Adrian Smith, James Saqacala, Martin Fong, Giles Smith.

Fiji Hockey
The QANTAS Hockey Club went to Fiji in 2004, we had a game against a few of their National players. And were very impressed with their standard of hockey. I highly recommend any team or club looking for holiday / hockey trip to visit Fiji.

In reply to Nzants question of what is the Qantas Hockey Club, Qantas is the airline of Australia. Qantas has many sporting clubs, hockey, soccer, tennis, netball, etc.
Once a year Qantas completes in a World Airline tournament, the tournaments are made up of airline teams only. Like British Airways, KLM, Singapore, etc.

Fiji Pitches
So Fiji have been awarded the Oceania Qualifiers for the World Cup. If that is so I think you will find NZ will be there as well as Australia. I am assuming that the FIH have been to Fiji and assessed there turf as acceptable. Have any rules been set down for the format of the competition ?
