- The Hunters’ Tower Rest in second place.

On Sunday the curtain came down on the hockey National League with the last two games. In the first game Champions Rabat beat Sliema Hs 3-1 while in the second game White Hart cancelled out the last nought in the league table when they registered their first win of the season beating Poiatti Qormi 2-0. The final league table reads as follows:

P W D L F A PTS
Rabat Depiro 12 9 2 1 25 10 29
The Hunters’ Tower Rest. YS 12 6 2 4 18 12 20
Sliema Hs 12 5 3 4 11 10 18
Poiatti Qormi 12 4 2 6 13 16 14
White Hart 12 1 1 10 8 27 4

This season’s League Championship was another triumph for Rabat who picked up their fourth consecutive title. Last year they ended the season three points ahead of closest rivals Sliema Hs. This time round they finished with a massive nine-point lead in front of second placed The Hunters’ Tower Rest. On Sunday they ended their commitments with a victory in an unnecessarily nervous game against Sliema Hs. Jason Vella put them in the lead but Liam Pace equalized before half time. An early penalty corner goal in the second half from Chris Bugeja put Rabat back in front and Branko Radojevic made it 3-1 in the final minutes.

This year’s victory was a tribute to their consistency through out, a consistency that none of their opponents could maintain. In fact Young Stars were the side that took most points off Rabat picking up two draws and a victory but then Young Stars did not manage one point against Sliema Hs and the same Sliema dropped two points against wooden spoon winners White Hart; two points that eventually cost them the chance to face Young Stars in a decider for second place. At the start of the third round Poiatti Qormi were welled poised to challenge for second place but a disastrous third round, one point for a possible twelve saw them slide down the table. Qormi’s disastrous third round culminated on Sunday when they were beaten 2-0 by White Hart. The goals from David Agius and Chris Mintoff allowed Tony Tabone’s boys to pick up their first victory of the campaign. All in all it was a deserved victory, not just for their performance on the day but more so for their efforts through out the season despite the difference in experience between them and the rest of the pack.

HAM senior competitions take a break over the weekend to allow for the visit from Stralsund Hockey club from Germany. The German veterans will be playing against Young Stars veterans on Friday 22nd at 19.00hrs and a selection of HAM veterans on Sunday at 10.00.

The senior competitions will resume the following weekend with the KO preliminary round match between Sliema Hs and White Hart.

European Hockey Challenge 2 (Men)

Once again Rabat will be hosting the European Hockey Championship Challenge 2 for Men between the 12th and 15th of May. Following last year’s success, the European Hockey Federation has chosen the local Champions to host this tournament. Besides Rabat, the champions of Serbia & Montenegro (MB Tricotex), Sweden (Partille HC), Norway (Aker HC) and Turkey (Kecioren Belediye) will also be participating. There will be two matches on Thursday 12th and Saturday 14th and three matches on Friday 13th and Sunday 15th.

I've been reading these articles for the last couple of weeks and thought that I should add my own thoughts about the season.

Even though it was only my second season I must say that the level of hockey has gone up since last year and I do hope that it continues to improve over time. If the level keeps on rising at this rate then we may be in for a good couple of seasons.

I would also like to voice my thoughts on all the people who write a lot of rubbish in these articles. In the article before this a certain idiot named che sara e sara wrote about the current situation in hockey. Even though others have already told him whats going on at the moment I'd just like to tell him that maybe he should not bother opening his mouth before he knows whats going on and if he feels that he can do a better job than the current HAM executives then I'd like to see him try. Also, if you want to stay criticising other people then at least say your name so everyone will know what an idiot and a coward you are.

Anyway thats all I wanted to say. I wish all clubs good luck for next season and hope that the level of hockey will get better over time.

Pedoflu
I would just like 2 point out a few things to Mr.Pedoflu:
1.)Theres no need for you to swear in every single sentence that you write.
2.)The name of a referee in hockey is Umpire not Empire.
3.)Tony didn't tell us to write anything I speak out of my own choosing and so does Alain.
4.)You must think you're pretty tough saying all that stuff about us but to me you're just a coward because you don't show your name. It seems that you are afraid of a small little 16 year old.

Anyway just so you know I really didn't take offence to your letter because loads of people talk the talk but no one can walk the walk and you're just another one of them.

german side visit.
Thanks to Dione Cassar a German veteran side visited our island.
In their first encounter the german Selection drew with the young Starts Veteran selection. Ther result was 4 - 4.

In the second game, which was played on Sunday, the maltese veteran selection won convincibely with a 7 - 4 result. Good goals were scored by Mr. Housley and Reno Bianchi.
The maltese selection held better talent and it seemed that the Germans where still recovering from the weekend visits.

After the game a Buffet dinner was held at the Westin Dragonara where the our hungry friends where treated to a very nice lunch.

At the end, during a speech held by the German side president, they presented Dione with a memento. They were very gratefull for the maltese hospitality and hoped to see us once again.

Such visits draw a lot of people to our hockey clompex. Last visit was courtesy of Tony Tabone where a veteran selection also came over.
we have to continue pushing for such visits. It would be nice, if various exchanges, including youth teams are done.

well said frank.

It is with people like you and your attitude that hockey in malta will move forward and not with people writing comments whose sole purpose is to critisize but not to suggest.

once again well said.

Hi Frank,

Just a short note, to put one comment in its right perspective; it was not me who organised the last Veterans Visit to Malta but the person behind the whole idea was none other than David Agius, and what's more he managed to generate a nice sum of money obo the Hockey Association. And this in my opinion is what we should all be striving for; generating money obo the Association. On my part I merely acted as a consultant and gave a helping hand where and when needed.

Cheers

Tony

Ma nafx ezatt kif inqala dan l-inkwiet, imma mil-erf kollu tieghi nista nghid li s-sena diehla, White Hart ha jamlu l-istoria. White Hart has but one weakness, it's offense. Once the team gets the hang of converting those numerous golden chances it gets in front of the posts into goals, White Hart will become a force to be reconned with.

Throughout the season we have given almost each and every opponent a run for their money, but alas the goals never came. At the end of the day it's the goals that count, not number of players tackled cleanly (or not) or number of runs till the "D".

The greatest encouragement the team gets lies in the knowledge that (except for Silver Fox) it's made up of some of the youngest players in the challange, giving plenty of room for expiriance.

Btw, I scored the WAY above mentioned goal!! :P
