With the question of the League title decided last week, the only matter still to be settled in the hockey league is who will take second place and following Sunday’s result The Hunters’ Tower Rest have taken a slight advantage. With their 1-0 victory over Poiatti Qormi, Young Stars not only condemned their rivals to fourth place but also maintained their two-point lead over Sliema Hs who beat White Hart 2-0 in the second game. Young Stars have now concluded their league commitments but will be anxious spectators on Sunday when Sliema take on Rabat in their last game of the League. A victory for Sliema will see them leapfrog over Young Stars and snatch the runner-up spot.

P W D L F A PTS
Rabat Depiro 11 8 2 1 22 9 26
The Hunters’ Tower Rest. YS 12 6 2 4 18 12 20
Sliema Hs 11 5 3 3 10 7 18
Poiatti Qormi 11 4 2 5 13 14 14
White Hart 11 0 1 10 6 24 1

On Sunday Poiatti got of to a bad start and were duly punished by Edward Hughes who scored what was to be the eventual winner. In the second half Poiatti improved somewhat and created a number of good chances but on the day they were second best to Young Stars and it is little consolation that they improved their league position by one place from last year.

Two goals, one in each half, were enough for Sliema Hs to get the better of White Hart and keep their hopes of finishing runners up alive. After barely two minutes their German striker Frithjof Bjorn Ulf Langelotz opened the score, firing in from close range after being set up by Pace. Despite this early advantage Sliema never really killed the game and White Hart shared the exchanges all the way. Even after Steve Cachia doubled in the second half White Hart did their best but their lack of punch up front was more then evident and they never really troubled the tightest defence in the league.

On Sunday the National League will come to an end. At 9.00am Rabat will face Sliema Hs while the last game will be at 11.00 between White Hart and Pasta Poiatti. The League competition will be followed by the Knock-Out, the draw of which were held on Sunday. Sliema Hs and White Hart will met once again in the Preliminary Round (Sunday 1st May at 10.00am) with the winner facing Rabat in the semi-finals. The second semi-final will be between Poiatti Qormi and The Hunters’ Tower Rest. The semi-finals will be played on the 8th of May.

FINAL RUN
WE ARE NEARING THE FINAL RUN OF THE LEAGUE. CONSIDERING THE LEAUGE IS GOING TO FINISH SO EARLY I SUGGEST THAT MAYBE THE HAM CAN CONSIDER FURTHER COMPETIONS FOR THE SUMMER.
THIS COULD BE FOCUSED FOR YOUNG PLAYERS SO THAT THEY START MAKING USE OF THE ASTROTURF.
THNAKS FOR THE COMPLIMENTS. IT IS NICE TO HEAR OF THE IMPROVEMENT.

SEE YOU ALL.

Club Funding
Hi Guys,

I haven’t visited this site for a couple of days but once I did, I found that there wasn’t anything really interesting to discuss.

However, when I read the message of "che es tato tato" above, it triggered me to reply to Ian Crockford on the message he posted on last week's report. (if I'm not mistaken)

First of all, I have to congratulate Dr. Crockford and Qormi H.C. on your achievement if you managed to receive a Lm1,000 grant from the local council. Club funding is not at all easy these days and anyone who ever tried to obtain funding for his club, knows what I'm saying.

So dear "che es tato tato", I wouldn’t mock around such an achievement if I were you cos although you might be right in saying that money does'nt buy you success, every club needs money to sustain itself and money does'nt grow on trees you know!!!

Anyway, back to the argument..... Ian, you should know that getting money from the Qormi Local Council would be far easier that getting money from a Local Council such as Floriana's. You have to keep in mind, that the predominant sport in Floriana is FOOTBALL!!! Apart from this, the Floriana population is very minimal and thus, the budget attributed by the Government for a Local Council such as Qormi would be far greater that that attributed to Floriana!

One should also consider that in spite of Floriana's low population, there is probably the biggest number of sport related clubs in Floriana.

Just to name a few, there is;
1. Floriana F.C.,
2. Floriana Nursery,
3. Floriana Supporters Club,
4. Floriana Ajax (Football and Darts)
5. Basketball Club,
6. Bocci Club,
7. Fencing Club,
8. Tennis Club,
9. Hockey Club,
10. Vilhena Club (Darts and Billiard)

I hope I did not leave anyone out but I guess you get my point now right?

Best of luck to you all..

hockey situation.
Come on you lot. Wake up.
The hockey Situation is in a poor state.
Once you used to say that we cannot start unless we have the ASTRO>
Today the Astro is there and is already rotting away.
Where are the sponsorships?
Where are the foreing teams?
What is happening to umpiring?
Everybody making up his rules?

Those where the days when everything was organized!
Where are the juniors?
where is our interest for the guarantees we have made for the project!

What fool have i been to make myself convinced to put up a guarantee.!

Addion development plan!

WEll as long as all the clubs are happy so am I

What goes around comes around!

There is no need for answers. I do not need them. just see what really needs to be done to get away from this state of misery.

the majority of your comments are unfounded and false. to only pick on a few:

you mentioned juniors; i being involved in the junior section coaching an u15 side am nothing but impressed by the junior development schemes implemented by teams such as sliema and qormi and am proud to be part of a senior team mainly made up of budding young (relatively speaking) players (just to give you an idea we regularly field seven out of eleven players that are under 19 players)

foreign teams? if you had been following your own sport carefully enough you would have realized that just a couple of weeks ago a whole german team came to malta and played a number of matches against all the maltese teams as well as junior national sides. i think i speak on behalf of all players who had the oppotunity to play against such sides that while we don't play against such sides frequently we are greatful to all those organising such trips for the few opportunities that do come our way. I am also pleased to let you know (seeing you apparently didn't know) that Rabat will be hosting 4 foreign teams from Sweden, Turkey, Norway and Serbia Montenegro in the European Club Champions Challenge.

Foregin coaches have frequented our facility and will do so again as I hear passing on their valuable knowledge to youngsters. So as I see it those in charge are doing their utmost to secure a brighter hockey future for young kids and i have full faith in them to keep doing so.

As for umpiring let us please at least try to be original and pick on something new as I have grown tired of the never-ending discussion of umpires.

As far as I am concerned everyone should just stop whining and concentrate on upping their own game as someone else cleverly remarked.

only a few days ago, che guevara or che sara sara.... what ever his name is, declared that he had alot of support, that people were backing him, that a revolution was about to start, that there was a coup d' etat going to take place along with several other futile predictions.

Now, he asks people to wake up, to back him, but miskin he s all alone!

IM NOT SURPRISED - WITH FRIENDS LIKE YOU, WHO NEEDS ENEMIES!!!!!

Just to update you a bit on foreign teams visiting the island over and above that already said by Alain Vella above....

Over this weekend there will be a German Veteran Touring Side playing at Kordin

Plus, if Sharjah Tigers manage to obtain all the visa's necessary for their Pakistan and Indian players, you will see them in action once again at Kordin within a couple of weeks.

Club Funding
James,

Thank you for your comments on Club Funding.

I don't normally like to get drawn into personal comments in this forum as I had already told you face to face. But out of respect, I would only like to explain that my mention of the funding tapped into from the local council was merely a general encouragment to hockey generally and by no means trying to blow our own trumpet or trying to undermine you or your Club's efforts.

As I had the occassion of also explaining to your President, we were quite lucky and it is not apparently normal policy for local councils to give much funding, however if properly packaged, this may be achieved.

I know that your Club is working hard on very important plans in achieveing a high level facility for hockey in Floriana and I can assure you that my comments were merely as a source of encouragment and you are assured that we are at your Club's total disposal should you need any assistance whatsoever in your ambitious endeavours for the Young Stars Project.

Thanks and regards,

Qormi Pres.
