South Korea vaulted to the top of the Sahara Hockey Champions Challenge standings on Friday after thrashing host nation Egypt 5-1 in Alexandria.
Korea seized the top spot from Argentina after the South American side drew level with Belgium 3-3.
The six-nation tournament ends today.
England and South Africa have failed to perform to their potential at these championships, languishing at the bottom half of the six-team competition heading into Friday's matchup.
England led 2-1 at the half before South Africa's Ian Symons levelled the contest in the 58th minute.
Six minutes later, England's Rob Moore scored the winner to complete a 3-2 victory.
Win some, lose some
Meanwhile, Argentina, the leaders of the competition on Thursday, relinquished that advantage by posting a 3-3 draw with Belgium.
The South Americans took a 3-1 lead over their opponents shortly after half-time when Matias Paredes struck in the 39th minute with a sensational end-to-end goal.
In the latter stages of the second half, Belgium responded with two quick goals in six minutes.
Loic Vandeweghe scored the equaliser in the 67th minute and the teams split the points with a 3-3 result.
Argentina's draw was Korea's gain as the Asian side pummelled hapless Egypt in the final match.
Sam Seok Kim scored a hat trick of goals for the Asian side, scoring the third just a minute from full-time.
Korea's victory means they move to the top of the standings on 13 points with a final round of games still to be played today. They have four wins and a draw.
Argentina is second with 11 from five games (three wins and two draws). Belgium is next with eight points.
