PETALING JAYA: Bukit Jalil Sports School are on the verge of their best ever showing in the MHF-Milo-NSC-Adidas Junior Hockey league after chalking up their eight consecutive win yesterday.
The sports school, who finished fourth last year, earned a narrow 1-0 win over defending overall champions Old La Sallians Association of Klang (Olak) at the Pandamaran Hockey Stadium in Klang.
The win gave Bukit Jalil 25 points and kept them in second position and are in line for the RM5,000 prize money.
They will wrapped up their league programme against another sports school, Bandar Penawar, today.
Mohamed Anwar Ali scored the only goal of the match from a field attempt in the 16th minute.
In other matches, newcomers Sungai Petani MC are poised to enter the quarter-finals after beating Malacca MC 2-0 at the National Hockey Stadium in Bukit Jalil.
Yesterday, Sungai Petani who needed full points to stay in the hunt responded with two well taken goals in each half to take their points to 16.
Mohamed Shukry netted in the 15th minute while Mohamed Shahedan added another in the 63rd minute all through field attempts.
The Kedah team now only need a draw against SM Datuk Taha in their final match on Sunday to enter the last eight.
But they could still make the cut earlier if SM Datuk Taha loses to Anderson today.
SM Datuk Taha also have 13 points with two matches to go. The cut point is 17 points.
Another team, Seberang Perai MC will also be watching closely at the SM Datuk Taha result today.
They also kept alive their slim chance alive with a 3-1 win over lowly PKNS at the PJ Hockey Stadium yesterday.
Goals by K. Harison, L. Pragas and M. Vasah provided the three points for the Penangites. PKNS replied through Mohamed Azizul.
Seberang Perai will be hoping that Anderson will do them a favour today and lift off some of the pressure by defeating Datuk Taha.
Seberang Perai coach Bob Rajendran said that they have only themselves to blame for this predicament.
"We now have to look for favours from others. And the match that matters is SM Datuk Taha against Anderson. If SM Taha loses then we need to beat MPPJ to make the cut."
