England coach Jason Lee blamed fatigue after his side allowed a two-goal lead to slip in the 2-2 draw against Belgium at the Champions Challenge in Egypt.
After disappointing from penalty corners in earlier matches Old Georgians’ James Tindall and Surbiton’s Matt Daly both converted set-pieces.
However, as the young England side – which has beeen beset by injuries – tired the Belgians struck back to snatch a a point with penalty corner strikes of their own.
Captain Brett Garrard did not play after breaking his nose on Monday and a reorganised defence failed to keep out what is regarded as the best corner battery in the competition.
“Our corner defence let us down,” Lee told the Press Association.
“It was an even game for long periods and Belgium put us under more pressure then Korea or Argentina.
“The guys looked really fatigued and a lot of them have not done this kind of thing before (playing such a condensed competition).
“However, we are starting to move forward but we must get a result against South Africa on Friday if we are to make the bronze medal match.”
