One-day men hockey champions Everest Hikers were dethroned by top Georgetown club GCC when the `A' teams met in the final of the Footworks Plus sponsored 6-a-side indoor tournament at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall on Sunday. GCC won by a 2-1 margin.
The Bourda club (GCC) also retained their ladies one-day title by defeating Everest Thugs 1-0 in the final through Ann Sue who netted the winning goal.
Everest Hikers however, did not leave the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall empty handed, since their top striker Jerry Bell was voted `Most Valuable Male Player' of the tournament. Bell scored in all four matches his team contested.
The `Most Valuable Female Player' award went to Tricia Fiedtkou (GCC) while young Chantelle Fernandes (GCC), known more for her exploits on the squash court, carted off the `Most Promising Female Player' award. Fiedtkou and Fernandes along with Chantelle's older sibling, Guyana and Caribbean ladies squash champion Nicolette Fernandes, scored one goal each for GCC in their 3-0 victory over Western Dragons in the semi- inal.
GCC `A' secured their place in the final by defeating their `B' team counterparts 2-0 in one of the two semi-finals while Everest `A' defeated Vikings 4-1 in the other.
Both GCC `A' and Everest `A' finished on top in the points standing in their respective groups. GCC `A' secured the maximum nine points from their three Group `A' matches, while Everest `A' recorded 12 points from their four Group `B' matches. Group `A' comprised GCC `A', Old Fort `A', Everest `B' and Vikings while Group 'B' comprised Everest `A', Old Fort `B', GCC `B', Police and Western Dragons.
In the Group `A' points standing, Vikings finished second with four points while Old Fort `A' ended third with three points. GCC `B' ended second in the Group `B' points table with nine points while Police finished third with four points.
In their group preliminary matches, Hikers `A' scored a 6-3 victory over Western Dragons, a 3-2 win against GCC `B', a 3-1 win over Old Fort `B' and a 4-1 victory over Police.
In the Group `A' preliminaries, GCC `A' defeated Vikings 3-2, Old Fort `A' 1-0 and Everest `B' 1-0 to amass their nine points.

Really good to see Guyana Hockey being promoted and keeping everyone informed about what is happening down there. I like that alot. Heard people say Guyana hockey was dead but you guys seem to be living it up down there. Keep it up. GCC got a lucky victory over my side in the recent Club Champs in Trinidad. My side had no bench and the sun was sooo HOT! You guys hurry up and get a turf so we can come down there and beat you all (laughs) or better yet jump on a grasshopper flight and come on over. Anyways, anyone from Guyana or anywhere in the world for that matter interested in talking hockey email me at sweeper4@hotmail.com. Peace. Oh yeah, I am a Jamaican.

Batman, we always have great clashes with you guys. Looking forward to some more sometime in the future. We are working on the turf but you know how that is with the funds, gov't etc.
This site has been giving us some nice coverage and I think it has really been a great help in creating awareness of hockey in Guyana and other countries similar to ours.
As far as Fuzzy's comment, I am sure you were only told of one controversial call in our favour but perhaps you should have received a more impartial report before making such statements.
As far as our national team, we have competed in the past in Caribbean Chamionships and Pan American games but right now the game is in a rebuilding stage and so we have suspended International Competition for the time. I think the next national team won't be assembled until 2002 or 2003.

About GOA Reds....man you are a tough side. I see that Wayne, Ranjeev and Kenny are now in the Canadian National side. Congrats. When teams the calibre of GOA make trips to the Caribbean it does an aweful lot for the development of the standard in this part of the world. Are you all going to the Pan American club indoor in Venezuela?
