KARACHI: Sixteen teams drawn in four pools will be featuring in the ninth President Gold Cup hockey tournament, which opens at the Hockey Club of Pakistan Stadium from May 6 (Sunday).
Railways will meet Karachi Electric Supply Corporation (KESC) in the opening match. According to the programme prepared by the Karachi Hockey Association (KHA), four matches will be played daily, with the first session starting at 7.30am. Reigning national champions PIA have been drawn in Pool A along with Navy, PTCL and UGC. Pool B consists of Wapda, PAF, Pakistan Juniors and Customs. HBL have been placed in Pool C with Army, Sui Gas and KESC, while Pool D comprises NBP, Railways, POF and KW&SB.
The top two teams from each pool will advance to the quarter-finals, which will be played on May 12 and 13 while the semifinals will be contested on May 14 and the final on the 16th.
Jahangir Butt is tournament director while Shams-uz-Zaman will act as coordinator. Assistant tournament directors include Haji Younus Siddiqui, Masood-ur-Rehman, Syed Ishrat Ali and Saeed Ahmed. Rashid Ali Khan will be umpires manager. The Pakistan Hockey Federation have already named a 14-member umpires panel for the tournament.

May 6: KESC v Sui Gas 7.30am; PTCL v Navy 9am; PIA v UGC at 3.30pm; HBL v Army 5.15pm.
May 7: POF v KW&SB 7.30am; Wapda v PAF 9am; NBP v Pak Juniors 3.30pm.
May 8: Navy v UGC 7.30am; HBL v Sui Gas 9am, KESC v Army 3.30pm, PIA v KW&SB 5.15pm.
May 9: Air Force v Customs 7.30am; Railways v POF 9am; Wapda v Pak Juniors 3.30pm; NBP KW&SB 5.15pm.
May 10: PTCL v UGC 7.30am; PIA v Navy 9am; HBL v Sui Gas 3.30pm; Army v Customs 5.15pm.
May 11: NBP v POF 7.30am; Railways v KW&SB 9am; Air Force v Pak Juniors 3.30pm; Wapda v Customs 5.15pm.
May 12: Quarter-finals (winner Pool A v runner-up Pool C 3pm; runner-up Pool A v winner Pool C 5pm).
May 13: Quarter-finals (winner Pool B v runner-up Pool D 3pm, runner-up Pool B v runner-up Pool D 5pm).
May 14: Semifinals.
May 16: Final.
