The third round of the Blue Label National League got underway on Sunday with Poiatti Qormi and Sliema Hs featuring in a rather dull 0-0 draw and leaders Rabat suffering their first defeat of the season going down 2-1 to The Hunters’ Tower Rest.

After these results the League table is as follows:

P W D L F A PTS
Rabat Depiro 9 6 2 1 15 6 20
The Hunters’ Tower Rest. YS 9 4 2 3 13 10 14
Poiatti Qormi 9 4 2 3 12 11 14
Sliema Hs 9 3 3 3 7 7 12
White Hart 8 0 1 7 3 13 1

The gap between Rabat and the second placed sides is still significant and with only three games to play, the six-point lead should see Rabat through. Next Sunday’s match against Poiatti Qormi will surely be an acid test for the Rabat side. The rest of the sides will certainly rue their lack of consistency throughout the season.

The Hunters’ Tower Rest. YS, while being the only team not to have lost against Rabat, dropped six points against Sliema Hs and another three against Poiatti Qormi. These on their part lost twice to Rabat and once to Young Stars besides drawing twice with Sliema Hs. Sliema could not build on their two victories against Young Stars. Be sides losing twice to Rabat, they also lost to Qormi and dropped an unexpected two points against White Hart.

Sunday’s first game ended in a goalless draw in what was a very dull and quiet encounter. Qormi started the encounter with the aim to take control of the game by holding on to the ball. They did just that and the amount of possession that the Greens managed to have helped them control the game. However they failed to build on their better possession and did not create one decent scoring opportunity. In fact the best chance of the first half fell to Sliema's Liam Pace who saw his hit after a short corner move saved by Qormi keeper Chircop.

Sliema HS started the second half stronger as they managed to take control of midfield. The Greens sent Sandro Bartolo in attack for the second half and pulled Chris Bugeja into midfield. Sliema kept the upper hand during the first part of the second half with Poiatti struggling to take the ball into the Sliema half. As the Greens settled down, the game returned back to the tempo of the first half with both teams running at each other's defences without creating much.

The game increased in intensity in the final stages with both sides creating a good chance each. Qormi’s keeper had to dive at Vella’s feet and deflect his shot wide and at the other end it was Bartolo who from a tight angle hit the ball straight at Mallia in the Sliema goal.

Poiatti’s disappointment in getting just a draw from their match against Sliema must have been greater following the second match between Rabat and The Hunters’ Tower Rest. The Rabat side had to succumb to their opponents for the first time this year. All three goals in this game were scored in the second half with Ivan Magro opening the score for Young Stars, Jason Vella equalizing and Charles Micallef putting his side back in front almost immediately. Rabat were guilty of squandering numerous chances while Young Stars took the ones that came their way.

On Sunday, before the League breaks for Easter, two further matches will be played with Young Stars facing White Hart at 9.00am and at 11.00am Qormi taking on Rabat. Another defeat for Rabat combined with the expected Young Stars victory might set up a dramatic finale. After Easter Rabat take on first White Hart then Sliema, Young Stars are up against Sliema and Qormi; who’s final game is against White Hart.

it's true that Young Stars are finding it difficult getting back to form....but as you all can see....they are still a hard nut to crack!!

i hope that you all have a bad weekend!

well done Rabat
congratulations on new the league. i feel that for long patches of the game we where there but then obviously you have people who in a twink can change the course of the game.
Having people like bones out and continuing to play to a high standard is a luxury which not everyone can afford.

WEll done also so Young stars who had a good game against whitehart. Whitehart had a good share of chances until Young starts scored the first goal. merit goes to the Yellow keeper.
after the first goal it was very hard for the reds to come back. Young stars played well.

well done also so qormi. with the material they have, they have put in a very good challenge. Playing Rabat is no joke. unfortunately they are the only team against whom we could not even manage one point.

Umpiring.

Although i was angry at some decisions the umpiring was quite fair. In my opinion the lack of proper training shows as some decisions are not consistent. HAm needs to push in more training for the umpires to keep them updated.
WEll considering the pressure of the game both umpires, especially Hughes, kept calm.

It was a very hot game and surely one the most difficult to control.

Thanks goes to everyone, Rabat and my colleagues because in my opinion it was a very entertaining match. It was pity we did not even take one point... well you cannot win them all.... or else i better say we cannot win a single one against these guys. Well done. See you. Happy easter.

Response To Frank Bugeja
Well said Frank!

The game of Rabat against Qormi is always a very very difficult game to handle. And you are also right about training provided my HAM...but at the end of the day, after attending one course after an other...you end up learning and descussing the same things. for me in this situation, i need prectice and expieriance to perfect my umpiring. My point is that at the end of the day you need practice appart from training!

At least from my part, i don't cosider myself to be an umpire with hedden agendas, although i hear nasty words coming from the players that at the end of the day sould be my friends and are also the pioneers of me becoming the player i am today.

I do make mistakes, but in the end...who doesn't!? i always hand and still have great respect for those friends! I'm just very sorry that when i ref those friends, it seems that the respect is not reciprocal! Anyway...all i can say is that these things tend to happen which i'm very sorry for!

I feel that i'm reffing quite well in the other games not consisting of Qormi. i don't know why that is.....may be it's the pressure of the game or the fact that i get the most verbal abouse from those friends i mentioned before. I'm sure that some one else has a better response than i do in this matter.

anyways...i think that all i have to say....the rest can be descused face to face. Happy easter to you all!

Rabat - Qormi
Frankie, Thanks for your congratulations and I agree with you that it was a tough match to umpire. What I would like to clarify for you is that Umpires need not only training to reach a desirable level of performance, but they need a good amount of experience. Edward Hughes is in his early days as an umpire, but I single him out as one of the promising ones. As regards his performance of yesterday one has to consider that he played the first game and being able to concentrate for 70 minutes after playing a full 70 minutes in midfield is not a joke. The best attribute for Hughes is that he is not the big-headed kind of guy and he is able to rationally identify his faults. We just have to give him some space including yours truly.

clarification
Hey guys- Robert and Edward. i have no hidden Agenda. I only congratulaed edward for his game. This is what i said because i thought that someone wrote in something else:

Although i was angry at some decisions the umpiring was quite fair. In my opinion the lack of proper training shows as some decisions are not consistent. HAm needs to push in more training for the umpires to keep them updated.
WEll considering the pressure of the game both umpires, especially Hughes, kept calm.

Why can't people take my words as they are? If i wanted to comment against the umpiring i have the guts to do so. I will not try to sound diplomatic. Everyone knowS how i am. ( OR I THOUGHT SO)
On the contrary to what you were thinking<hughes i was passing a compliment. Yes you had a good game and i did not judge YOU badly about your decisions. Not even when you gave out a yellow card.
on the contrary, you kept your cool when the same player shoved a ball out of pitch and it hit you. As regards to training i was not directing this to you. I was saying this in general. I can tell you about a match in the 9 a side when Qormi played against Young Stars and an umpire and a player, both seniors, where arguing on the same decision. THEY DID NOT EVEN AGREE ON THE HIGH BALL ISSUE. This is what i was referring. I was neither addressing yourself nor Joe Lewis.

As for last Sunday's game i was only not happy onLY two occasions. Nothing big. But i still said you had a very good game.
Maybe others saw otherwise. But i do not care. The occasions where these.

Once, in mistake you pointed in the wrong direction and The opponents where going to hit me. It was an honest mistake. JOE LEWIS HIMSELF SAID TO ME THAT IT WAS A GENUINE MISTAKE. I AGREE, BUT I WAS PROTESTING BECAUSE I WAS GOING TO BE CAUGHT OUT.
SEcondly when an opponent lifted the ball and was not penalised. Then i lifted the ball and was penalised. Right decision but i only made the point that even the opponent had to be penalised.

You have to make one point clear my friend. I never verbally offended any of the umpires. Surely in this game i did not and to tell you the truth i rarely do. I protest but in a normal manner.
AND WHO DOES NOT. COME ON BOTH OF YOU.

If i was angry and wanted to pin the fault of last Sunday's defeat was with my own colleagues because i believe we should not have consided such a soft goal.

I do not accept any of the accusations put in my direction. I never said words like hidden agendas and things like this. Yes i believe that in previous matches your performance could have been better but i have nothing to argue on this one.

Robert, if you think that i am makING life difficult for Hughes i totally disagree. I complain as much and maybe less as others do.

Unfortunately i believe i am wasting my time. I think i leave in a world of my own. I thought that in past literatures i had read that people where thinking that umpirings were favouring teams in particular. Go in past writings and you will find it.

If there is a common understanding of the rules there would be less problems. I know of two umpires who did not know that once a short corner is hit above the board even if it goes down AND HITS THE BOARD this is null.
This is what i wanted to mean.

No problem guys. carry on. Well when i see that my fair and honest comments are taken otherwise i sincerely start to think otherwise.
Thanks and have a nice day. Next time i will keep my opinions to myself. Less said the better.

VIVA MALTA.

PROSIT HUGHES.! PROSIT ROBERT! PROSIT HAM! THE UMPIRING LEVEL IN MALTA IS GREAT, WELL I THINK THE GREATEST IN EUROPE AND IN THE WORLD. THERE IS NOTHING TO IMPROVE.

OK LIKE THIS. I HOPE YOU LIKE IT.

kummenti dwar il hadd li ghadda
il hadd li ghadda ghalkemm ahna (youngstars) irbahna, jien tlaqt min kordin bil geddum u ddispjacut. imma ha ntiekom ftit rendikont ta kif marret l-ghodwa tieghi il hadd li ghadda mill bidu sa l-ahhar.

wasalt kordin fit 8:10am, kont naf li mhux se nilghab allura kont daqxejn aktar relaxed mis-soltu. numbru sostanzjali ta players mit team taghna waslu tard tant li 5 minuti qabel il loghba kien hemm min kien ghadu qed jilbes. (ahseb u ara kemm ghamlu warming up!) din hi haga li jien nikkonsidra bhala nuqqas ta interess u vera ma niflahiex. imma nsomma, kieku kont jien il kowc f'dak il hin, konna ninzlu nilghabu b'inqas minn hdax fil pitch.

il loghba kontra WH kienet pjacevoli hafna. YS qassmu il ballun tajjeb u WH ikkontrollaw ir ritmu tal loghba perfettament. well done lil waylin ghax ghamel zewg saves krucjali u lil david agius li bhas soltu, kien pedina soda ghal WH. Hadt gost nara l-improvement li qed jghamlu iz-zaghzagh ta WH. PROSIT. KEEP IT UP. Ir rizultat ta 4-1 ghalkemm ghalija huwa sabih, forsi mhux daqsekk gust ghal l-effort li ghamlu WH imma nsomma.

meta mort inbiddel wara il loghba, iltqajt ma ex-player ta YSHC li kien qed jipprepara ghal loghba tieghu kontra Rabat. Konna fl-istess kantuniera tad dressing room, mhux aktar minn metru l-boghod min xulxien, imma ghalkeem jien ippruvajt naghmel ftit 'small talk' mieghu, dan iddecieda li jghamila tal muntun u ma kellimniex!!!

imma nsomma. kont qed insegwi il loghba u bhall dejjem, jien kont qed inzomm ma rabat. forsi ghalikom ma tamilx sens ghax kieku rabat tilfu konna nergaw nidhlu b'cans ghal league. imma jien, meta ma nkunux qed nilghabu ahna, dejjem mar rabat inzomm. tafuha din, ilni zmien inzomm maghhom anke meta jkun jaghmel aktar sens inzomm mat team l-oppost. anyway, iddispjacieni nisma u nara l-insulti lejn edward li beda jipprova mill l-ahjar li jista jikkontrolla il loghba wara li kien diga tbazwar fil midfield ghal 70 minuta fil loghba ta qabel. iddiskustani il pupa bl-ghemil tieghu ghax waqt li kien qed isaffar il loghba taghna mal WH (li kienet relitivament kwieta) tghidx kemm qalilna xorti meta ikkumentajna mid dug out ghal xi decizjoni li ttiehdet. imma meta kien qieghed kowc hu, kien qisu xi xifajk jaqbes u jaghajjat u jinsulenta l-umpire!!!

apparti l-insulti li gew minn naha tal players taz zewg timijiet, kien aktar dizgustanti l-ghajjat ta insult gej minn dr, ian crockford (qormi pres) li l-ezempju li beda jaghti kien veru oxxen. prosit ehh!! u billi wara l-loghba gie wicc imb wicc ma edward biex jiskuza ruhu... tahseb li b'daqsekk ghamilt sew jew ghemijlek ntesa dr crockford?

la darba l-insulti ghamilthom quddiem il folla ta nies, missek kont ragel bizzejjed li tghamel apologija quddiem kullhadd jekk veru trid titwemmem li kont ddispjacut ta ghemijlek. MISSEK TISTHI........ HEKK JITGHLMU LLUM FIL KORS TAL LIGI?????

Wara l-loghba, poggejt bil qeda maz-zghir biex nixorbu xi haga u nghidu kelma. lanqas biss konna qed nitkellmu fuq hockey imma minn wara iz-zghir, li kien bil qeghda quddiemi, bdejt ninnota lil pawlu l-pupa jhuf u jhares lejna u jippassigga minn warajna. x'haseb li kont qed nipprova nikkonvincih jigi jilghab maghna jew? ftit wara, gie robert hdejna u hemm pawlu ha l-opportunita u gie jigri hdejna wkoll biex ma nmorrux nohduwlu il 'prodigy' tieghu. hallijna pawl!!

minn fuq, gie jiftahar bil progress inkredibli li ghamlu qormi din is sena. dan kollu minnu pawl, imma jekk qed tahseb li dan il progress huwa thanks to you, ghandek zball kbir. kull min ghandu ghajnejh f'wiccu jaf li ir rizultati li gibtu din is sena huma grazzi biss ghal goal keeper (ramon) li qed jaghmel loghob incredibli. (prosit ramon..keep it up) u ghal frankie li skorja ma nafx kemm il goal din is sena.

pero l-aktar li weggatni kienet il kumment li ghamilli pawlu hemm dwar l-ex players ta YS li din is sena qed jilghbu ma qormi. jekk veru temmen dak li ghidtli nhar il hadd pawl, veru int misinfurmat ghal l-ahhar!!!! imma iz zejt, dejjem telgha f'wicc l-ilma pawl. stenna u tara!!!

l-ahhar daqqa ta harta li qlajt nhar il hadd kienet meta tnejn ohra minn '"shabi" ex-players ta YS ghaddew minn quddiemi u l-anqas biss selmu!! ma kont se nghidilkhom xejn ghax tliftu tafx. tahsbu li jien hadd gost ghax titilfu jew tirbhu?? ma tarax, x'differenza tghamilli? jien nitla kordin biex nipprattika hobby tafx mhux ghax ghandi xi interessi ohra. anzi dwar il loghba, nahseb li kien rizultat ingust ma qormi ghax zgur li kien haqqom punt nhar il hadd.

imma jidher li mhux kullhadd jahsibha bhali ghalkemm f'sitwazzjonijiet ohra jorini mod iehor.

meta tridu jien available biex niehdu drink fl-imkien u nitkellmu fuq kollox basta mhux fuq hockey jekk tahsbu li fuq il hokey mhux se naqblu. ma ghandkomx ghalfejn tiddejqu minnhi. jiem ma nigdem lil hadd u l-ahhar haga li nixtieq hi li nitlef hbieberija ta snin fuq bicca loghba!! jekk il pupa joqghod jinkwieta, ghax niltaqghu, avzawh li jien la qatt 'KECCEJT U/JEW TAJT BIS SIEQ' lil hadd, u la qatt mjien se nipprova ngieghel lil xi hadd jilghab mieghi jekk ikun qed jaghmel dan kontra qalbu.

Comment to Frank
thanks frank for clairifying what you mean and how you feel. but i would like to ask you what you ment when you said to me once in a game that i was refing (Qormi vs Rabat)....you said this....." imma jien dan it tifel x'qad ghamiltlu biex qied jghamili hek?"

i'm sure that your a very respectable person...but why you once said that to me is still a big mystery. You have never done anything bad to me and i'm sure that i have never done anything bad to you! Maybe it was a figure of speach frank? i have no idea.

so what if i made bad mistakes in recent games, and i'm sure it won't be the last. But i would also like to question Ande's friendship when after the same game i'm refering to now, he verbaly insulted me, saying words that i'm sure i don't deserve.

i'm sure that he was pissed of at my decisions, but to say those things was desgusting. and if it wasn't for 2 members of my family being there to here him, i probably would have never known what he said. i'm sure you heard him, but if you didn't it doen't matter because it's long forgotten now.

i don't expect him to say sorry, and neather do i want it. but come one, you 3 are still my firend and we should still be able to exchange words afterwards. i cant understand why we are finding it difficult to do so. anyways, as i said before, it tends to happen these days.

Hockey
Hey guys Im sorry to see all these firing squads from different teams and unfortunately it has a negative reinforcement on may way to life on hockey in Malta....

Edward you are a good guy and you shouldnt be offended on what people say or do on the pitch. Ive been hit on my head with a stick (while walking) on the pitch by one of my ex players i coached - and so what... it s part of the game. I've been hit on my hand last sunday by Robert and if i maybe was a bit pissed off would have certainly said that he did it on purpose... but i didnt cause i know it wasnt on purpose.. just part of the game... and being bloody mediterranean we are bit hot tempereed...so..I have great admiration towards him and im sure he didnt do it on purpose... but no one even gave me the chance to express my pain he he.... but any way....

Have also been misinterpreted and misunderstood by many people at my previous club and despite i can still sit with them and have an orange juice... he he James i only talk with you so that you could reduce my insurane he he... Ivan Magro is still one of my best friends though i miss him a lot! Other players say hello and goodmorning cause they have to... but so what.... Cheer up guys...

As i was telling you James my priorities have changed a lot and thanks to hockey i have understood a lot of things! Once Boudwein (a dutch coach who came in Malta) once told me and my brother not to put all the eggs in one basket and so i did.... I love.... or rather like hockey a lot... but it has become clear to me that i can make real friends (very few of those he he), less real friends some enemies (actually a lot) and some faccoli. Imma nsomma that is how life is and today i dont bother about it that much... yes it used to hurt me a lot seeing a lot of things and hearing things things about me but now i understand how stupid i was....

For those people who input a lot of energy towards hockey i can only tell you that life is made of balance and all this hockey mania has to be taken with a pinch of salt... thats how i tried to take it..... even though some insist that my nick name carries my personality... he he but anyway every one has a right to say what he wants...

regards my move to Qormi.... it has been coming for a long time and it had been postponed for two years while i was playing at Celtics.....may be it reflects my view to hockey nowadays.... i dont go for the trophies and competion (even though i still like to win and give my temporary best on the pitch) but a nice 70 minute run o the pitch... having said that and having done an operation at the beginning of the season my view to hockey has changed... Being paralised from one knee from the pitch and being carried to the hospital has left a scar on me personally and my fitness... Everyone has noticed that my fitness level and involvment in the game has decreased a lot even though i have given a lot of training to it... it doesnt seem to get any better... or if i take from a point of view i am much better than i was aching with pain on the pitch...well psychologically i think that finally i have come aware that hockey is not everything and while i enjoy reading some of the stupid comments posted on this site, i look back and see that my contribution to hockey was a lot and have passed some wonderful memories... some things have improved.... like the astro pitch others have not improved if not to say did some passi ta granc... and i think i have said enough to contribute to this lot... maybe some one would like to comment on that but whatever....

have to go guys

Just to let you know that 4 players don't make up a team a team is 1 and by that I'm not saying that they were bad players.

Guys just relax and take off your bullet proof vests it's like we're at war and every word that is said is like a shot being fired, Insomma naqa extremes, But get the point. It's obvious that it was going to be a hard egg to swallow for all the players of YS when we heard news of the departure of 4 YS players, As I myself notice is that our finger is consintley on the trigger ..........relax. Most of the players at Young Stars have been touched by the departure and I'm sure you guys know that most of you grew up together and it's tough for you.

U zghir take note of what I said because it's not what your thinking. A friend for me has to have this certain quality called understanding you never know what goes on trough the other persons mind.................. put the teaching a-side. To understand a person and what he's going trough, the only thing you can do to understand him is to put yourself in his boots.

P.S. Don't think I haven't tried your boots. (I know how its feels).

I hope I don't offend anyone by saying what I said, and no reply is needed from anyone. I just want to express myself like most of you enjoy doing so here.

il-klikka tal-poter issa ilhom wisq hemm u rabbew l-ghanqbud biex ma nghidx kelma aktar iebsa.

ejja naraw nies godda fit-tmexxijja. andna bzonn team ta' nies li jimmottivaw lil xulxin. andna bzonn team leader li jimmottiva gruppi ta' nies biex jadhmu flimkien fuq aspetti diversi tal-loghba taghna. youth development. marketing. finanzi. grounds management. competitions u bordijiet. timijiet nazzjonali. mhux klikka wahda miggielda ma' kulhadd. ma va !!!!

bye bye one man show. u l-klikka li terda madwaru.

ejja kuragg kulhadd. issa c-cans li nibdew inbiddlu. il-young stars per ezempju ghandhom nies zghar u kbar li jhobbu l-hockey u kapaci jaghtu sehmhom ukoll fl-oghla tmexxijja. l-istess ghal hotsticks, hal qormi u rabat. kulhadd bzonnjuz u jista' jsib postu fl-organizazzjoni. hadd mhu ghar-rimi.

ejjew nahdmu lkoll flimkien.

kuragg.

Li qied tighd mhuiex il boghod hafna mir-realta tal-loghba taghna, l-unika zball li ghandek huwa li in-nies li hemm mumiex biex ikunu fil-poter izda biex jaghtu servizz. Hemm bzonn veru li jinbidlu in-nies u jkolna aktar nies kapaci izda l-ewwel ma jrid issir huwa li in-nies kapaci johorgu min go qoxortom qabel ma jinqereed il-Hockey. Mhux kullhad jaff li livell ta incompetenza li tezzizti!! izda kullhadd jaf ukhol li m'hemm hadd li jaghmeil dan ix-xoghol!! hares lejn it-tim nazzjonali, u jaqbdek il-biki ... il-coach ma jaghmel xejn ghax ma jaf xejn, imexxi David ghax irrid jiddefes f'kollox, irrid jitrenja hu, jitrenja lil hadd iehor, bla karizma ta xejn u ma jafx!!! "he doesn't have it" kif jighd Tabone. il coach qied hemm ghal raguni wahda, biex jagevola lil David u it-tifel tal-president ghax peres li it-team tighu mhu qed jaghmel xejn ghalinqas ikolhom sucess fin-nazzjonal. il-problema hija dawn in-nies jahsbu li huma kompetenti.

Dan fuq kollox jigri ghax tezizti dik li jighdula OMERTA. noghod kwiet ghax hekk jaqbilli naghmel. Nidhol fl-esekutiv biex jekk ikun hemm xi azzjoni kontra il-club tighi immur il-bqija ma nersaqx. Id-delegati tal-clubs kolla qishom pastizzi, biex ma nuzax kelma ohra, immoru ghal laqghat tal-kunsill biex jitilqu l-hemm kemm jista jkun malajr, probabilment ghax il-president ikun ghamel wahda min dawk il parlati tedjanti tighu.

Xotra jibqa il-fatt li dawn il-ftit nies hargu ghonqom biex jaghtu servizz, u ta dan jixirqilhom rispett.

Grazzi tal-kummenti tieghek u ghal kuragg li ghamiltli ghax milli jidher jien u int qed inhossu l-istess rih.

Qed tara, dawk diga tnejn...int u jien. Mela bdejna x'imkien.

Ippermettili gentilment nikkoreggik pero ghax ghidt li jiena semmejt il-kelma 'poter' u mhux servizz. Jiena b'dak irreferejt ghas-sitwazzjoni prezenti u mhuwiex fil-vizjoni tieghi tat-tmexxijja tal-futur. Fil-fatt jiena temmejt il-kitba tieghi billi ghidt "ejjew nahdmu lkoll flimkien". B'dan zgur nahseb li int fhimt li jiena team-player u minix xi one man band. U lanqas ma jien wiehed li nikkritika biss imma diga bdejt nahdem.

Mela ghalissa qedin tnejn li qed inhossuha u jalla johorgu aktar nies minn qoxrithom kif ghidt tajjeb int.

Jien fiducjuz u diga ghandi lista ta' il-fuq minn 15 il-persuna li nahseb ghandhom xi haga x'joffru lil hockey taghna.

Nerga nghid, ejjew nahdmu lkoll flimkien.

Ok imma biex l-affarijiet immorru il-huddiem, hemm nies kapaci li jridu jithlu fix-xena u m'hux joqghodu passivi. Nemmen ukhol li in-nies li hemm presenti qed jaghmlu dak kollox li jistghu (u sa fejn jafu) biex il-loghba tmur il-qudiem, u ghalek wiehed irrid joqghod attent kif jagixxi, ghax tigi interpretatta bhala azzjoni personali.
