Report from Amy Hollingsworth, Manager:
A successful start for Canada’s quest to secure a place in this year’s Junior World Cup. Play began immediately following a lively and entertaining opening ceremonies. Canada wasted very little time gaining control of the pace of the game and quickly penetrated the Puerto Rico circle. Katie Rushton scored a lovely reverse hit to put Canada up 1 – 0 in the opening minutes of the game. Great team play and precise passing led to 5 more field goals. Robyn Pendleton assisted the second goal scored by Tiffany Michaluk. Thea Culley, with a second effort to stop the ball from going over the endline, was rewarded with our 3 rd goal. A lovely give and go ball from Tiffany to Katie Baker netted our 4 th goal and received loud approval from the crowd. Our 5 th goal, scored by Karen Mann from Katie Baker, was a result of quality passing and team play. Katie Baker netted her second of the game in the 25 th minute assisted by Tiffany Michaluk. Patient play in the circle was rewarded with a!
penalty corner in the 32 nd minute. Tiffany Michaluk netted her 2 nd goal of the game and answered quickly with her 3 rd in the 33 rd minute to complete the hat trick. Not to be shut-out Jessica Denys hit a hard low corner shot off the penalty corner in the 35 th minute to secure a resounding 9 – 0 lead at half time.
Strong team play and well executed passing continued to overwhelm the inexperience of the Puerto Rico team. Emma Carbery stepped up from her center back position to score Canada’s 10 th goal in the 41 st minute. Thea Culley proved to dominate the circle scoring a natural hat trick from field play in the 43, 55 and 61 st minutes putting Canada up 13-0. Tiffany Michaluk and Katie Baker completed the scoring rampage with goals in the 64 th and 68 th minute.
Tiffany finished the game scoring 4 and Katie Baker also with a hat trick.
A solid team effort that saw all players contribute under difficult lighting conditions. Canada continues play today against Bermuda.
