Defending one-day hockey champions Everest Hikers were well set to retain their one-day title yesterday when the Guyana Hockey Board of Control (GHBC) staged the Footworks Plus one-day Labour Day tournament at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
Up to press time, the defending champions had amassed six points from two matches in Group 'B' while their 'A' team compatriots were struggling on one point from two matches in Group 'A'.
Hikers ladies team (Everest Thugs) were also off to a good start after winning one game and holding GCC to a 1-1 draw. The defending champions had only played one game at press time yesterday.
Old Fort 'B' and Police were tied on three points in Group `B' while in Group 'A', GCC 'A' were leading with six points from two victories. Vikings who had played two matches were on one point from a 4-4 drawn game against Hikers 'B'.
Hikers 'A' scored a 6-3 victory over Western Dragons and a 3-2 win against GCC 'B'. Jerry Bell bagged a treble for Hikers 'A' against Dragons while one goal each came from Devin Munroe, Carl Dookie and Jerry Marques. For Dragons, Jermaine Murray netted a double and Adrian Sampson scored goal number three.
In their fixture against GCC 'B', Jerry Bell was in a no-nonsense mood once again and scored another treble while Orlon Semple and Yaphat Edghill found the back of the net for GCC 'B'.
In the Group 'A' competition, GCC 'A' defeated Vikings 3-2 and Old Fort 'A' 1-0 for their six points.
In their clash with Vikings, Phillip Fernandes scored a double and Tony Solomon one goal while Gregory Sills and former national striker Gavin Hope, found the target once each for Vikings.
Another member of the Fernandes clan, Phillip, scored the lone goal in GCC's 1-0 victory against Old Fort 'A'.
In other Group 'A' results, Vikings and Hikers 'B' played to a 4-4 draw in a thrilling encounter which saw Hope finding the net on three occasions for Vikings while Alan Fernandes netted the team's fourth goal.
For Hikers, Timothy McIntosh and Jermaine Lewis both netted twice each.
In the opening game of the tournament which had to be switched from the GCC ground due to overnight and early morning rain, Old Fort `A' defeated Hikers `B' by a 2-1 margin through a double from Askofu Simon. Robert Fernandes pulled one back for Hikers.
The semi-finals and final were slated to be completed last evening.
