An ?International Umpiring Clinic? for both male and female umpires will be held during the annual international ?California Cup? (CalCup) Hockey Tournament in the Los Angeles (LA) area at Moorpark College.
Mr. Ray O?Connor (Ireland), one of the most accomplished ,International, Grade I umpires will again serve as the clinic conductor We are honored to welcome Mr O?Connor back as the 2003 PANAM/CALCUP clinic was so well received .
Ray has umpired over 140 international games, three Olympic Games, two World Cups, two European Championships and five Champion Trophies. Ray?s recent significant appointments include umpiring at the 2004 Olympics officiating in both the men?s semi-final and final.
The clinic will be held from noon on Thursday, May 26 (the day before the start of the Tournament), and continue during the first three days of the tournament (Friday-Sunday, May 27-29). In addition to classroom sessions, blocks of time will be reserved daily for all participants to observe and evaluate, together with the clinic conductor, the umpires involved in targeted games and discuss various aspects of umpiring. In order to maintain the highest level of instruction, ?national? rated umpires with international advancement potential, and all international umpires are encouraged to participate. However we would also like to encourage applicants who have demonstrated significant potential for advancement to elite level umpiring positions to apply.

The ?California Cup? (CalCup) tournament is organized by Mr. Tom Harris and a group of highly dedicated individuals from the area. Mr. Dave Jackson (e-mail: napcap1@aol.com, phone: 805-523-2790) has agreed to coordinate the seminar as a representative of the CalCup Organizing Committee. Umpires selected and confirmed by the CalCup co-ordinator will have opportunities for umpiring tournament games and be reimbursed $20 ? 25 per game and a hotel room for 3 nights, double occupancy. All the arrangements needs to be made in advance and confirmed by Mr. Dave Jackson .

All umpires should express their interest in attending the clinic by writing directly to Dave Jackson napcap1@aol.com . Umpires should include a brief Umpiring resume addressing ratings achieved and recent tournament activity. The deadline for response is April 10th, 2005.

Further information concerning the clinic will be sent to all participants via e-mail as soon as they are available and/or can be obtained from the organizers.

Paid Umpires
Is it true that in addition to benefiting from the course that umpires may offset some of their costs by being paid for umpiring during the tournament?
What are they paid for each game? How are they assigned?

Curious/Paid Umpires
Curious
Spoke to Dave Jackson of Calcup this morning..pleasant fellow..funny accent though.
Heres what he explained.
The Umpiring Course Fee is $75 dollars covering the 4 days of the course. Umpires who participate at the elite level and umpire Super division games recieve $25 dollars per game. Umpires who officiate all other games are paid $20 per game.
Umpires who are coming from further than 200 miles ? away recieve a hotel room ( shared ) for three nights which means the clinic attendees have to pay for one additional nights accomodation.
You may want to compare this Umpiring Clinic with the USFHA clinic in July where they are charging $250 per attendee with no remuneration opportunities or chance of live game review.
If you are interested in the Socal Clinic there are apparently 5 slots still available as of this morning

Clarifications
Curious, just to clarify a few things that Wansbo said...

Umpires at the Cal Cup tournament are appointed to the Super Division by the tournament committee and are then under the guidance of an Umpires' Manager. In the past few years FIH UM Alan Waterman of Canada has been at the helm, which means the umpires get international-calibre coaching during the weekend. The UM is also responsible for match appointments in cooperation with the Super Div director.

When Ray O'Connor gave the PAHF umpiring course at the Cal Cup in 2003, the session included live game review and exercises that involved both the class participants and the umpires on the game also involved in the course. Those practical exercises were nicely balanced with classroom time. No question it's invaluable, but it's a very busy few days at the tourney as you're either umpiring or in the course for at least 8 hours a day. And you can't overstate this: Mr. O'Connor is not to be missed.

As I read it, the Champions' Challenge seminar will in fact incorporate live game review, which means the opportunity to analyze top-notch international women's umpiring. The seminar fee includes passes to the matches for the three days, as well as some meals. I agree, it's quite an expensive endeavour, but for those of us in the Pan Am region we are forunate for any exposure we can get to the international game and FIH umpire coaches. Details can be found at: http://www.womenschampionschallenge2005.com/news/umpire_course.htm

Hope that helps.

Perhaps the Umpires course can teach umps to defend themselves from getting attacked in Semi-finals? Or the maybe the Cal Cup Coordinators could do a better job of screening "danger" teams from getting into the tournament!

There is just "one" team responsible
The "problem" team each year in the "Super League" is San Jose... Period. Don't invite those players from that club and don't take their $$$$... Period.

This is not the first time.

I am sure another " Foreign Team" would love to come.... I heard that the umpire's have "tasers" with them this year.. :)

In spite of those responsible for last year's embarassment .. I thought the tournament
was well run and the hockey was exciting.... and the officiating was good.

Though San Jose Khalsa has a blighted reputation and has been involved in many unsavory incidents it was not the team that perpetrated the assault on the Umpires last year. My understanding is that the semi finalists were a team comprised of Indian players from Ontario and a few US based players. My only regret is that no assault charges were laid and the perps get away with yet another banning. A stay in a Ventura County jail ( preferably in Oxnard ) would help these hockey thugs see the errors of their ways.
I'm sure that with Mr ray O Connor acting as Umpires manager that the product on the field will have the best direction. Is he bringing any Irish Umpires with him ..if so make sure the local bars bring in extra Guinness .. be a tragedy to run out of food for the Irish Boys.

Umpiring Clinic
Dear All,
We will be providing an update outline of the clinic by Easter Weekend.
Ray will also be acting as Super division manager so will be able to view most participants games on the turf.
We feel privileged to not only have Ray O Connor as moderator but also by the presence of all the great Umpires who wil be attending the clinic.
It is now California Cup policy that any assault on Umpires or players will be referred to the Ventura County District Attorney's office for prosecution . The assault on Jim Patel was disgraceful and the assailants should have been prosecuted .
Jim has been a great friend of Calcup and we are always look forward to his return.

Look forward to seeing you all.

Hello Can Fan... you must be a DIE HARD fan of San Jose Khalsa...wink wink... All your posts always have somethig about San Jose Khalsa.... just to let you know...Last year San Jose Khalsa wasn't even playing in the tournamant...... I have been watching tem for almost 15 years almost in all the tournamnts.... i haven't seen them beating an umpire or being physical with them... yes they are very aggresvie and do argue a lot with the Umpires..... But i would say one thing about them.... they bring a field hockey atmosphere in to the tournament..... and yes They Have Entered their team in the Super Division... can't wait to see them in Action.... like it or not... they aren't that bad...
