The cream of Guyana's male and female hockey players will be in action today at the GCC ground when the Guyana Hockey Board of Control (GHBC) stages the Footworks Plus one-day Labour Day tournament beginning at 10 a.m.

Five male teams as well as four female teams are expected to be a part of today's tournament where defending male one-day champions Everest Hikers will be seeking to retain their status as Guyana's best one-day male team while female one-day champions GCC will be looking to do likewise.

Teams are however asked to note that if it rains heavily tonight or tomorrow morning, the tournament will be switched to the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.

The competing teams are: (Male)- GCC, Everest Hikers, Police, Old Fort and Vikings. (Female)- Old Fort, Everest, Western Dragons and GCC.

Hikers and GCC won their respective one-day titles in January this year at the NBIC sponsored one-day tournament. Today's matches which will be played on a round robin basis, will be of 20 minutes duration each with two halves of ten minutes each. The top seeds after the completion of two rounds will advance to the semi-finals.

Meanwhile, in an effort to attract more female hockey players back into to the sport and generally to get more females involved, the GHBC will
be starting a female league later this month or early in the new month. According to the GHBC vice-president Jerry Bell, The women have not played league hockey recently and hopes that this serves to resuscitate and generate more interest in womens hockey.
