Malta: RABAT STRETCH LEAD AT THE TOP. There are 24 comments on this articlex24

The second round of the hockey National League came to an end on Sunday with the inevitable of déjà vu. Champions Rabat have a seven point lead over their closest rivals and with four games remaining it would seem only a question of mathematics before Rabat notch up their fourth consecutive title; the sixth in their short history. If they succeed they will be the first team to do so since Young Stars won five consecutive championships between 1979 and 1983.

At the end of the second round the league table reads as follows:

P W D L F A PTS
Rabat Depiro 8 6 2 0 14 4 20
Poiatti Qormi 8 4 1 3 12 11 13
The Hunters’ Tower Rest. YS 8 3 2 3 11 9 11
Sliema Hs 8 3 2 3 7 7 11
White Hart 8 0 1 7 4 13 1

Sunday’s games produced a miserly two goals as Poiatti Qormi beat White Hart 1-0 and Rabat followed suit with the same score line against Sliema Hs. A chain of circumstances and events has pushed Poiatti Qormi into second place after a shaky start to the league. The first round saw them pick up a mere four points courtesy of a win and draw but three victories in the second round has pushed them above their competitors for the second slot in the standings. On Sunday a second minute goal from Sandro Bartolo was enough to see them take all three points in a quite game in which White Hart rarely poised a serious threat and Qormi could control fairly easily.

The clash between Rabat and Sliema Hs was once again decided by a solitary goal scored mid-way through the first half. If the first game was a quiet one this one certainly wasn’t alternating moments of good hockey with some scrappy play and hard tackling. A couple of tricky decisions from the umpires added to the mix. However once the dust had settled it was Rabat who came away with the three vital points thanks to the Chris Bugeja goal.

There will be no games from the National League this weekend and the third round will start on Sunday 13th March with two crucial matches. At 9.00am Sliema face Poiatti Qormi while at 11.00 Rabat play The Hunters’ Tower Rest. Victories for Sliema and Rabat will give Rabat the title while a combination of any other result will most probably just postpone the inevitable.

CAN THE REPORTER BE MORE CLEAR?
WHAT DO YOU MEAN?

IF QORMI ARE AT SECOND PLACE IT IS MERIT TO THEM! ONE CAN ALSO SAY THAT IN THE FIRST ROUND THEY HAD A LEGITIMATE GOAL DISALLOWED AGAINST HOTSTICKS.

AGAINST RABAT THEY GOT TWO PENALY STOKES IN THE LAST TEN MINUTES AND IF BOTH HAD BEEN SCORED THEY COULD HAVE DONE BETTER.

AGAINST YOUNG STARS, ALTHOUGH I DO NOT AGREE, SOME SAY THAT A FOUL WAS COMMITTED INSIDE THE D. IF A PENALY WAS GIVEN AND SCORED WE WOULD HAVE BEEN BETTER.

IF IN THE SECOND ROUND HOTSTICKS HAD TAKEN OFF THE APPEALED POINTS THEY WOULD HAVE LESS THREE.

COME ON! YOU REMEMBER THE ITALIANS ONCE HAD A TV PROGRAM IN WHICH ALL THESE CIRCUMSTANCES WERE EVALUATED.
BUT WE ARE NOT THEM.

IF ALL THE POSITIVE NOTES WER TAKEN THAN QORMI WOULD BE FIRST.! RUBBISH THIS IS ALL NUISANCE.

THE TRUTH IS THAT QORMI ARE SECOND AND SO BE IT. LET THEM ENJOY IT, FOR NOW!

THEY HAVE NOT BEEN THERE FOR AT LEAST TEN YEARS.

Pathetic Journalism
Robert Aquilina commenting on a previous article was right in saying that this site is providing some interesting reading all be it some rather pathetic and possibly demeaning to our beloved sport.

Whilst like Robert I shall try and keep an objective view and not comment on unofficial personal provocatary views of individual contributors, I cannot but express my disgust at any comments expressed by persons purporting to represent our Association.

The above comments "A chain of circumstances and events has pushed Poiatti Qormi into second place...." certaintly cannot be considered to be fair independent journalism.

As Qormi President, I would therefore like to use this forum to clear the minds of the ignorant few and explain what this 'official' reporter was referring to when he 'ably' referred to 'a chain of circumstances and events'.

ln my opinion, this unfair and biased reporter was referring to the 'cunning protest' of Sliema Hotsticks claiming that Qormi fielded a player who was not on the match team-list and the subsequent saga.

I would like to start by reproducing competition rule 12.1 which states that "any complaint regarding the circumstances of a match, must be made in writing and to the Secretary of the Association within 48 hours of the match being played. To be valid, it must be ACCOMPANIED by a deposit of LM15....".

Whilst acknowledging that, the omission of a player's name from our team list was a genuine mistake on our part, for which we take full responsiblity, the subsequent 'slip-up' which lead to this 'chain of circumstances and events' (as so subtly put by the 'official' reporter above) had nothing whatsoever to do with our Club.

Following the match in question, Qormi vs Sliema HS (30/1/05), our Club was informed of this oversight via an email from the HAM Secretary of Tuesday 1st February 2005 that a 'PROTEST' had been lodged.

Referring to the above competition rule 12.1, the Association WAS NOT in possession of a protest valid 'ab initio' as the deposit of Lm15 was NOT lodged with the Association within the stipulated time. Consequently, the HAM Secretary did not verify this before sending us his email of Tuesday 1st February 2005 indicating that a (valid) protest had in fact been filed.

This gross omission and non-observance of the competition rules of the part of HAM in fact led to alot of waste of time and anxiety for the HAM executive committee members as well as committee members of the respective clubs involved in this matter, and in my humble opinion, resulted in the (so-called) 'chain of circumstances and events' which allegedly 'pushed Poiatti Qormi into second place' referred to by the above 'official' commentator.

Maybe SOME merit ought to have been given to our Club's hard work and determination to finally field a competitive side with a most sporting attitude.

I submit all this for correctness' sake.

Best regards.

Hockey Level in Malta
On a much lighter note than my other contribution to this article, I would like to share a recent experience with you all.

I was in London last week and had the opportunity to visit a top London Club and watch an English Hockey League Premier Div. I match between Old Loughtonians (London) vs Firebrands (Bristol).

Coincidently, the assistent Coach of the Old Loughts team, Duane Robinson, used to be the team manager/player of Enfield Town Hockey Club when I used to play there and he is also the coach of the Old Loughts Mens 3rd team. He was thrilled to hear that we have now got our own artificial turf surface in Malta and showed interest in exploring the possibility of a visiting side some time in the future.

I must say that the welcome given to the visiting Bristol side was incredible and reminiscent of my brief hockey-playing spells in England and Italy (many) years ago. The friendship that existed between the two sides (and their respective families and supporters) was notable and left me wondering why, with only five teams and everyone knowing each other, we couldn't all share that lovely hockey sporting sensation in Malta also.

As to the match, well it unexpectedly ended up in a 2-3 victory for the Bristolians, with a hat-trick from their top scorer number 3, Simon Lanyon. An Old Loughts win would have seen them in a better position in the upper half of the table whereas a loss for Firebrands would have left them dangling dangerously at the bottom end.

Incidently, Firebrands were only this season promoted from Div. II and in fact Simon was the top scorer of the league. Knowing this after having done my pre-match reading from the internet, I expected that this lethal number 3 would be tightly marked, but that was not the case. The smart Firebrands player coach, David Hacker, put Simon on the field for many brief intermittent spells thus giving the opponents not much chance to mark him closely - clearly an average player might have grumbled that he would not have had time to settle in the match, but that was clearly not the case as he produced three fine and deadly finishes for his side - in Chris Bugeja (Qormi) or Bones (Rabat)style.

Old Loughts player Darren Cheesman (England U/21) who was selected as the Hockey Writers 'Young Player of the Year' is also a player of fine talent. Indeed, both sides had several England, Wales, South Africa and Kenyan U-16/18/21 players to make the match very keenly contested but, as always, the better organised team on the day triumphed.

Although the level was high, I am most certain that, in my opinion, teams such as Rabat, the subject of this article, would easily give these two sides a good run for their money and could easily come out on the winning end.

So, to all teams - Keep up the good level of hockey and to my team - It is a pleasure to serve you.
