*** ARGENTINA DEFEND CROWN WITH SUCCESS ***
Final: Argentina 7 Chile 0
SANTIAGO DE LAS VEGAS, Cuba. Argentina defeated Chile 7-0 defending their crown with success in the eighth men's Pan-American Junior Championship at the Antonio Maceo stadium, 25 kilometres South from La Havana.
This tournament qualified the top three - Argentina, Chile and Mexico - for the Junior World Championship to take place from June 29 to July 10 in Rotterdam, Holland.
In a back and forth first half, with high-standard hockey exhibition from both teams, Argentina took a 4-0 lead in the last 10 minutes.
It was an excellent half as both team produced dangerous attacks well saved by their respective back rows and keepers.
Argentina got four penalty corners (against one from Chile), but failed to capitalize the first two. In the third, Pedro Ibarra opened the score from his powerful dragged shot for the 1-0 lead, in the 25th minute.
From then on, Argentina were superior in precision and speed to net three more times, in the 27th and 28th minutes, by Tomás Argento and Lucas Vila, both from solo plays, and through Ibarra, again, from a penalty corner, a minute before half-time.
Argentina kept control of play after half-time, while Chile continuously attack but they could not break their neighbours' resistance.
The title holders answered with fast counter-attacks, reaching Chile's area with danger and then they increased the advantage to 5-0 from anoter Ibarra's powerful corner shot, in the 53rd minute.
With one man less in each side - Tomás Alonso and Diego Villaseca were temporarily sent off, in the 66th minute - Argentina sealed their solid victory with two more goals from Lucas Vila, in the 68th minute, and Tomás Argento, again, in the 70th.

*** BRONZE AND WORLD CUP BERTH FOR MEXICO ***
Third-place playoff: Mexico 4 United States 0
Mexico trounced the United States 4-0 and also qualified for the next men's World Junior Championship.
It was expected more from the US performance against Mexico, but the Mexican fully dominated the first half to go to half-time leading 4-0.
Mexico put up an excellent performance during the first 35 minutes. They showed accurate and clever play with few mistakes, while their forwards did not failed at the time to score.
On the other hand, Chávez's team took advantage of the penalty corners, while the US team defended them very bad.
Thus, Mexico capitalized on almost all the option they created. In the seventh minute, captain Roberto García opened the score from a penalty corner, and four minutes later, striker Jorge Gómez put his team 2-0 ahead from a rush through the right wing.
In the 15th minute, Reyson Aguayo deflected a cross to net the third, while Gómez again increased the gap to 4-0, in the 25th, deflecting a penalty corner.
Meanwhile, United States attacked looking for a goal, but they failed to produce clear penetrations and when they did it, Mexico's back row and keeper Alejandro Vargas stopped them in style.
United States attacked from the very beginning of the second half, but their advances were well intercepted by Mexico, who overcrowded the midfield and defence sectors, alongside a sparkling performance by goalie Vargas.
Mexico kept control of play until the final, defending throughout the field and counter-attacking with two forwards, and sometimes only one, to take the deserve bronze and the last Junior World Cup berth.
México: Vargas; Galván, Zuleta, Barrera, Reyes; Martínez, R. García, Ríos Benítez; Gómez, E. García and Aguayo. Also played: C. García, Gallegos, Chavira and Borquez. Coach: Jaime Chávez.

*** FIFTH PLACE FOR CANADA ***
Fifth-place playoff: Cuba 1 Canada 2
In a close match, Canada defeated the hosts 2-1 to take the fifth place.
Cuba fully dominated the first half, but Canada opened the score - in the 27th minute - by Mark Pearson.
Cuba kept the pace of the first 35 minutes, reaching the circle several times with danger, but the good performance by Canadian goalie Patrick Mackey, prevented the local side to open the score.
The first deep attack was enough to allow Canada to take a 1-0 lead.
Canada reacted after half-time, pushing Cuba hard towards their back line. Meanwhile, the hosts answered with fast counter-attacks looking for the equalizer.
However, it was Canada again who increased the gap - in the 52nd minute - through Jesse Virdi, who capitalized on a penalty corner cross.
Cuba's efforts were rewarded, in the 64th minute, when Ramón Risquet netted, but the last six minutes were not enough to allow the home side to equalize.
Cuba: Hernández; Y. González, Caballero, Aguilera, Barzaga; Risquet, Olivares, Dieguez; Díaz, Quirola and Makenci. Also played: Castillo, Herrera, Gutiérrez and J. González. Coach: Yumai Oliva.

Canada for sure would have finished third if Mexico birth certificates meant anything....but if we can't finish third at the Pan Ams there is not much of a point going to the World Tournament....Mexico and Chile will get slaughtered.

Blame game
Let's not go the "if" route with the birth certificates. The same was said for Cuba for years as well and we qualified. We had a 2-0 lead at the half. Likewise, bad calls go for both teams, but as humans, we tend to only remember the ones against us.
We only look like school yard children when we start the finger pointing and crying.
Instead, let's analyze where the problems, fix them and move on. I'm sure that even in the loss, the boys have learned a lot about what to do next time. Some of them will take that experience, bitter though it is, to the Senior team. Hard learned lessons are often the best learned lessons.

new coach and executive
what i don't understand is that gene is the still the national team head coach with the weakest record in canadian field hockey history? and secondly, that giles wheatly was the junior national head coach? <<< this guy and robin richardson couldn't even coach the victoria selects, how do they expect to coach the junior nats. without all that talent in victoria, giles would have stood out a lot more, but for the wrong reasons.
gene totally dismantled the last junior world cup team, not encouraging the crop of that squad to stick around and play for the senior team. i really think that we need to have a total clean up with out men's program, starting from gene and ending at the "executive" who's field hockey mentality is more outdated than their hair styles....

Sad Comments
Comments from naive, peripheral and deluded bystanders.
One short corner execution from Canada, and one miss from Mexico and Canada would likely have been in 3rd place. We would have GREAT coaches and a WONDERFUL junior program. World hockey is like soccer - it has become more widely competitive and tactically equal. Cuba had about 9 short corners against the USA, converted 0 and lost 2-1. What comments would we have seen then, if Cuba had beaten the USA ........
Just get a grip and realise that at a certain level most teams can beat most others on any given day.
ps
The Canadian Junios tied Germany earlier this year - remember.....

re: RANDO
your absolutely right ! Canada would get slaughtered even if they did qualify. A perfect example is last junior world cup, they finished DEAD LAST in the tournament! Coming top 3 in the PAN AM is no big thing, the real test comes at the major event. Hats off to Argentina though they are now taking over the PAN AM region and are quite competitive in other major events as well.

First off, i'm from Toronto. Secondly, what I have come to know of those to indivdiuals is their lack of hockey knowledge. After reviewing the game reports, I have come to see that for the most important games, one of Canada's MOST skilled player was sitting out - Jesse Virdi. I've seen this young man play in numerous tournments, and the skill that he has, should have been put to better use.....

J Virdi is definitely not one of the most skilled players on the team. he rarely passes, cant play defense and can hardly make it one lap around the field.....gene is not the problem in canada, he really knows his stuff and is respected around the world for that, as for giles you may right, i dont know..... and if you are from ontario then you probably haven't seen most of the bc guys play so dont make comments on who the best players are.

Dear NWO
You seem to know alot about Robin's and Giles'es character as well as the Selects, so you must have spent time on the island... How else could you have made the astute observation.... by reading game reports?
Skill means nothing until you can grasp the fact that you are playing in a " team" sport where everyone's skill in passing , moving without the ball, markingand so on... We have heard of various plyers being championed as the saviour of National Team program
but exceptional skill ? does not equate success on a team.
Giles is exceptional at coaching a "team" ... Those who selected him to be the Jr. Nat coach know.

j virdi is skilled but needs to improve his fittness. gene, is a problem, just look at the stats - enough said. as for giles, unless you have been "coached" by him, you would know how bad he really his. i'm asuming you haven't, so i would keep your weak a$$ comments to yourself.

I dont know why the program has degraded to what it is now, all I know is that if the people making these personal comments shared the same passion that giles and robin have for the game we would be that much further ahead. Go ahead coach at the local level and create the passion for the game you folks obviously have. Grass roots is where this all begins.
We all love the game so lets all get involved so the skill and desire is there when the players reach the provincial and national level, the the program is winning.
Just a thought........

RE: NWO
Don't talk about a coach if you haven't played for him. Gene is a great coach his knowledge of the sport is outstanding, he brought great insight to the team. So stop talkin about his stats, because when it comes down to it, stats are just numbers. If you think you can do better than Gene and Giles, why don't you try running for coach. Get your facts straight before you start talking a whole bunch of BS.
P.S. You might want to consider a new name, NWO sounds kind of S#$, oh wait your full of BS, so it does suit you.

"...stats are just numbers." - That’s a great line. I’m guessing you used the same ideology when playing in Cuba - if you made it that far! if you stats are as good as your game, sucking up to the head coach on here is not going to get you anywhere.
just to state the facts, i have played and currently play for gene. Secondly, gene is getting paid more than any head coach in Canadian field hockey history. Thirdly, Canada was in the top ten before he started coaching, what number are they now? And finally, since i don't want to embarrass you any more, Canada field hockey has never had the structure or executive as it does now with gene as head coach. All that being said, i think you've proved your JR status with the S#$ comment (just to let you know, that word has 4 letters : -), maybe you should also take some spelling lessons). Go on now; let your mommy pack your field hockey sticks so you try to play with the big boys.....

While I do wholeheartedly agree that NWO is full of BS and you do make some good points re: having actually played for the coach. However a coach is going to be assessed by his results. PC stats or circle penetrations are stats and those for sure don't matter but regardless of how good of a coach Gene is, his results with the national team in international tournaments to date are horrendous. He has to start being more result oriented and stop worrying about getting along with his players.

If any of you are interested...my thoughts after seeing the Pan Am juniors...
Argentina was head and shoulders above the pack. No particularly outstanding player (it is hard to look outstanding on an Argentine side) but every one of their players on the pitch was of a high standard as usual.
Chile has mastered the turf tecniques like Argentina. I gues their more frequent competition between the nations in that region is benefiting Chile quite a bit. Chile however had a few weak areas. In particular when they played against the USA, they had no answer for Patrick Harris. Harris was outstanding and reminded me much of Quan on the T&T team. Chile was up 2-1 and it was Harris against Chile as Harris began to make several unstoppable runs which invariably ended up with Chile conceding a corner. Harris managed to equalise with a drag flick but then Chile put in a golden goal in overtime to win but it was close.
Mexico has improved considerably since gaining a turf. Their defense, though slow was solid and only showed signs of vulnerability when Argentina attacked through their speedy left winger. Mexico attacked in numbers with great support among their forwards and midfield.
USA was basic. The players knew their roles and they had a few good defensive players but all in all they were a one-man team in offence (Pat Harris).
Canada was solid in defense but seemed to lack any players with real offensive ability. At junior levels having a player who can eliminate his marker still plays a key role. They used the scoop a lot as Jonathan can throw the ball into the next City but their forwards connected on very few and so it was just giving away posession to defend from the front. They almost gave the game away against Barbados with this ploy.
Cuba was their usual run and gun but their tactics have not kept pace with the changes in modern hockey. They played well in spurts but could not sustain it for more than 10 minute stretches.
Barbados had their usual skillfull forwards but all work too individually.
Their tenth and eleventh players were not at a high enough level to pressure teams. A problem that still plagues all Caribbean teams (lack of depth).
Trinidad looked impressive in the early going but depended too heavily on players like Wayne to make an impact. Wayne is good but coming from the midfield he was too far to make enough of a goal-scoring impact. Cowie, their Captain, in the midfield was disappointing as he did not stand out from the rest of the pack at all.
Jamaica are still playing grass hockey and have not improved at all since they got the turf. I sense a lack of dedication in their players too.
Hope I didn't bore you all but thought you may have been interested...

That's the craziest comment i've ever seen on PFH. Let's continue that on shall we? C. Robertson sat out all the games Canada lost. That should tell you something. J. Watson dropped out and didn't play any games that should tell you something. Give me a break, J. Virdi is the least dedicated player on the team. He never showed up to practices and is really out of shape. Players who weren't going on tour still showed up at practice. No excuses whatsoever. In my opinion Giles and Gene should've taken someone who at least showed up more than a couple of times.
