Ireland's two games against Belgium have been brought forward to accommodate Belgium's late invitation to the Champions Challenge tournament in Egypt.

The games, which are being used as preparation for Ireland's Europan campaign in September, will now take place on Wednesday March 2 and Wednesday March 9 at Three Rock's Grange Road ground in Dublin.

They also give new Irish coach David Passmore a chance to see his players competitively for the first time.

A third game on March 21 will see Passmore use his Development Squad as he assesses all the talent available.

"I will use these games to look at different player combinations and position, in adadition to experimenting with systems of play," says Passmore. "Belgium provide ideal opposition following their trip to Australia."

Two separate squads have been named for the games, which come close to the Irish Senior Cup semi-final date.

Match 1 squad: W Bateman, J Black, M Black, S Nicholson (Cork Halrequins); P Brown, M Irwin (Instonians); S Butler, J Sherriff (Dragons); T Cockram, M Raphael, B Waring (Lisnagarvey); G Elliott, R Gormley (Pembroke); C Henderson (Corinthian); D Hobbs (Cork C of I); I Lewers (Annadale), G Shaw (Annadale). Reserve: M Gleghorne (Loughborough).

Match 2 squad: W Bateman, D Eakins, J Black, M Black, S NIcholson (Cork Harlequins); A Barbour (Cookstown), K Burns, D Hobbs (Cork C of I); S Butler, J Sherriff (Dragons), C Henderson (Corinthian); T Cockram (Lisnagarvey); D Bane (Aer Lingus); G Elliott (Pembroke); P Maguire (Dublin Univ.), P Brown (Instonians); G Shaw (Annadale). Reserve: E Magee (Banbridge).

Who will Passmore use in the development match, will he stick with mainly senior guys aswell as Eamon Bane, Gareth Watkins, Joe Brennan etc stc.. or will he use some of the young players from U18 and U21 squads? These matches will be interesting to see how Passmore will play the game.

Agree with anon. Walker was excellent for Leinster U 18's. He sat out the 1st match against Munster and look at the result. Also Walker is getting better games at club level
as Harte is only 3rd team H/Quins. How Harte got on the regional development
squad is questionable, or is Passmore feathering his clubs nest?

Dont think there are any outfield players in the squad but i def. think there should be, even if the guys aren't good enough to play i dont think training with the squad would harm them, just take a look at the senior women, they have introduced a few u18 players to give them a taste of senior international stuff. At the end of the day these guys are the future so the quicker they get into the set up the better.

Keepers
There's a big difference between being on the regional development squad & the full Irish squad. Don't forget that Mark Ruddle is out injured & there is a need to develop up & coming keepers. I saw the under 16 & under 18 interpros & Harte was the best keeper on view. Should be Irish under 18's number one this summer.

Dave harte is and excellent keeper and by far the best keeper on view in the recent interpros.

He has being deputising for Bateman for Quins firsts and has been outstanding in the matches where he did deputise.

Lads, Dave Harte, you are having a laugh. If it was not for the fact that the Munster U 18 coach was a clubmate of his(admittedly playing on the 1sts two teams higher than DH), he may not have been there at all. Philip Lecane is every bit as good. He is defo better defending short corners.. He is playing Division 1 hockey week in week out. I watched a league match involving Quinns 3rds before xmas and an opposition player miss hit two short corners and they bobbled past him and his hat trick came when he noticed Harte lying on the ground before he hit the corner so he scopped it into the roof of the net.
Lecane did very well for the bit of the Interpros he played. That said Walker was better than the two of them.

Eddie get your facts right
Electric Eddie is wrong.

David Harte is a Harlequins 1st Team player - he doesn't play for our 2s as Daunt (Ireland U21) is there playing well.

He has played many matches for us this year, in both the league and friendlies (including Canterbury from England and Railway Union). If you come to our training you will see he is very close to Wes Bateman. He hasn't, as far as I am aware, played in our 3s this season and even if he had you don't judge players on such a low standard of play!!

The suggestions here that John Hobbs and Dave Passmore are pushing Harte because of their club association is quite outrageous and highly damming. It is obvious that you do not know these characters. They are two of the most honest, up front, objective guys I know.

I was at the interpros - the other GK that caught my eye was the Leinster keeper.

What a load of rubbish. Not difficult to guess what team you play for! Come back & contribute sometime in the future, when you have something intelligent to say. You must come over very wise with your own peers. You played in the match but maybe you contributed so little you could call it watching.

Ok Quinns player, lets thrash this out. If Wesley Bateman plays for the first team and Chris Daunt plays for the 2nd team what team does David Harte play for ??
Who is the number two going to Vienna ? I heard it was Daunt and now it is Harte. But you said that Daunt is the 2nd team keeper. If he is should he not be going to Vienna ?
By the way, when you say he is close to Bateman do you mean he stands beside him at training or that he is close to him in standard ?

Alan is going to be one of the best irish forwards in years to come so if your slagging him now, give him a few years and then try and slag him, cause i guarnatee there wont be much to slag him about!

Passmore
I think Electric is being a little niave.

I played under Passmore at club level when he took our club into the national league. He leaves no stone unturned and his attention to detail is a lesson to us all.

Dave will want to ensure he has two quality keepers in the squad to ensure he covers loss of form or injury. It appears as though he's team are going to Europe so it is logical to me that he will use two keepers through the season.

Class coach - he is a loss to us here in England.

When is this rubbish about keepers with "potential" going to stop. I have been playing hockey for over twenty years now and the amount of schoolkids who were "the next irish keeper" numbers in the hundreds. All the best keepers in ireland and abroad are in their late twenties/early thirties. A couple of spectacular saves does not make a goalkeeper. There has always been the fallacy that a young keepers
errors can be corrected over time. It has been my experience over the years that if basics are missing they stay missing. The most important parts of goalkeeping are the following:
1- Defensive Organisation and Communication
2- Defending first time hit from penalty corners
3- Defending switches from penalty corners
4- Defending drag-flicks from penalty corners
5- Defending shots from open play
Each one of these keepers with "potential" is judged so on points 4 and 5
It takes years of experience to get to standard on point 1, many never get to standard.
Points 2 and 3 are fundamental, there can be no weakness at all here.
Points 4 and 5 are very important too but are redundant with faults on points 1,2 and 3.

keepers with "potential"
Planet field hockey is supposed to be an anonymous posting site. All i will say is that i have been coaching underage goalies at provincial level for many years and i have been playing for over twenty and i have been introduced to "the next irish keeper" so many times. Each one has been an athlete who looked the part and made wonderful spectacular saves. That counts for nothing if you don't call your defenders into the right positions , if you do that then there wont be shots on goal in the first place. If you cant nip danger at the bud then there will be so many shots a few will inevitably go in. If a keepers logging technique for first time hits has any flaws in it at all , its a goal on a plate every time a short corner is conceded. If a keeper cannot read a switch again its a goal on a plate every time a short corner is conceded. A good proportion of drag flicks and shots from open play will go wide or just hit the keeper if the striker is put under any kind of pressure. Believe me mr.hockey of the handful of "next irish keepers" who don't retire when asked to fight for their place very few can organise their defence, have a solid logging technique and can read a switch. Which leads me to my central point which keepers would you drop from the irish squad for the sake of "potential". Which keepers who have proven themselves should lose out for someone who might.

I think we should stop arguing both these two lads. They are obviously extremely good keepers as making the irish under 16's and 18's team is an achievement in itself so they should be congratulated for this. Alot of people think that these players are born with the talent but the secret really is hard work and commitment. Every Irish underage player works there ass off to get to where they are and certainly do not deserve to be criticised by these anonymous critics!
harte or walker?

Iain Walker is clearly the better goalie. He has played almost every senior 1 game for YMCA this season and last. Harte plays at a mickey mouse level in munster league which has no credibility as serious competition. Also Walker took the place of greg keeley who was on the fringes of the leinster senior squad, who's place has harte taken on his "meteoric rise"
