England coach Jason Lee has selected a youthful side to compete in the Champions Challenge in Egypt in April.

Lee has been experimenting with new players following a number of retirements after the Athens Olympics but the unavailability of some players and injury to others has left him with little room for manoeuvre.

The 18-strong squad which will go to Alexandria to play in the tournament for the nations ranked seventh to 12th in the world has an average age of just 23 and half have fewer than 10 caps.

Goalkeeper Simon Mason, a veteran of three Olympics and three World Cups, is the latest player to announce his retirement after 194 international appearances for Great Britain and England, which leaves Surbiton 26-year-old Jon Ebsworth as the number one choice for Egypt.

"He has been undecided for some time now but watching him in league matches he is still very much good enough [to continue playing] but there are some young goalkeepers coming through," Lee told the Press Association.

On his squad selection Lee added: "There are a lot of guys who can't commit because of work and we have a few injuries, while we have decided to leave the under-21 players with the under-21s to continue their junior World Cup programme.

"I would like to have more competition for places but at the moment this is what I consider to be the best squad available.

"I am very hopeful and it will be good experience for them."

Squad: J Ebsworth (gk), R Moore, M Daly (Surbiton); N Brothers (gk, Schwarzweiss Neuss); B Garrard (Klein Zwitzerland); B Hawes (Amsterdam); S Cordon, M Taylor, B Middleton, A West (Cannock); A Wilson, G Kirkham (Loughborough); J Brown, J Clarke (Reading); R Alexander, J Stedman (Old Loughtonians); J Tindall (Old Georgians); M Pearn (Polo Club, Barcelona).

Selection
I think Jason is right in his selection given the injuries and retirements but even so this does look a very inexperienced side on paper.

I hope the guys selected really assert themselves and put in a great showing though and also hope that all those that think about posting on this site look at the positives and not just that there mates, kith or kin have been overlooked.

Please can we keep this thread free of the usual conspiracy theories?!

I still think Jason Lee has overlooked players who should have been included. I wish him and his team the very best at this tournament.

The U21 could only beat Gibralter seniors 1 nil. Think even our seniors could do better than that. The 21's would get slaughtered. Surely Watts is the only player that would have a look in for the seniors. The 21's are weak. Although I think this senior side would lose to the Athens team which is a worry!
I wonder...?

Is Jimi Lewis unavailable/injured/not selected?

Would have expected to see his name down.

I too would be interested to see the result of a game between the under 21's and the senior team. I dont think the under 21 team would have much of a chance though if im being honest.

Motivation
I bet the guys feel great knowing they were selected because lots of players can't make it because of work commitments and he does not want to take the u21's.

Lee has a lot to learn in dealing with the press!

If we look at this squad with positive spin and think forward there are players for whom a taste of international hockey may bring the best out of them. Maybe this is a sighter to see who, if given the slightest chance, will train harder, have the best attitudes and work and develop themselves. I dont think this squad is a 'here and now' solution to much, but the Olympics is the Holy Grail and these may be the boys to do it in four years time.

Personally i'd just like to see hopefully all the newer players emerge from this having stepped up their game a level to compete with the best, giving a solid base for the future. Some of the more promising players from Prem 1 who are banging in goals and putting in consistently top level performances may be added over the next few years, some of these might not be able to take the pace. But this is the only reliable way to test that.

I dont think we need to name names for who 'should' be there. The only man to name names is Lee, we have to trust him.

Its true Watts and may be Mantell are the only ones who are good enough to challenge for senior places at the moment. But it really looks like the team requires defenders, only Garrard has any experience at the back and surely Cordon, Brown etc will strugle especially against Koreans. Where is Todd sr?? and Todd Jr would also benefit.

what a mess, no direction no planning and no funding. Lee is a very bright lad, he can't be in control of this shambles. He must be a lame duck coach. Who is pulling the strings??

There must be an enquiry, an open and honest one with the results published.

With the amount of retirements surely it's asking a lot of this squad to have a successful tournament next month especially with potential match winners as Mantell and Jones sidelined. Fair play to Lee for the squad he's picked though as there is definately real potential for the coming years

Surely with number of injuries and retirements that have taken place, Jason Lee should be given some credit for the squad he has selected. Although, with these the only 18 fit players at his disposal, should he have not considered any of the players such as Simon Ramsden etc who played in the games against Belgium at th end of last year? I think he is right not to include the current U21 players yet there are other players from last years U21 squad who are now too old who I feel should be considered. I hope that after the champions challenge that the coaches will consider these options and these players will be given a chance to prove themselves.

Find some comments on this thread a bit harsh. The U21 squad is not "weak" but is a very young one with mainly players of 17/18/19 years. They have another two years at this level and the talent . The senior squad is a new one, also consisting of mainly young players who are a breath of fresh air. They are the base from which to build a solid foundation and Lee has to start somewhere. It's unrealistic to expect too much too soon - they need a chance to play together and progress for the future.

Why Tindall from Div 2, why not Watts or Mantell. The tournament should be used for learning and experience in preparation for the Commonwealths.

GB or England?
Champions Challenge is meant for the bottom 6 from the previous Olympics right?

So, how come it's England this time round? When do GB come into the picture?

Just asking

Jason Lee's choice and because Tindall has earnt this chance. I'v seen better players in div2 than both Watts & Mantell, so bases on your logic why not more div 2 players.
Grow up and get real, J Lee is an honest guy and doing his very best concidering the problems he has with those self appointed plonkers governing our game.

Alessio,

GB (currently) only exists for the Olympics (and qualifiers if necessary). Since England have historically been the strongest of the teams making up GB, the FIH have decreed that automatic qualification for GB depends on the performance of Enlgand in the European Championships. Conversely, ranking points for GB performances at the Olympics are assigned to England, and England inherit GB's classification for the purposes of Champions' Trophy/Challenge.

These sort of comments make you seem like you are exagerating a little.
Why aren't these players scoring hat tricks every game and getting noticed or getting their team promoted?

Fair play, only played aghainst him once an was pretty average, not at the same level as Watts and Mants, but you say he has been looked at so my comment stands, if they are doing it then they will get looked at, he is and rightly he has.

Don't knock Payne as he is a good prospect and all his goals appear to come from open play.

Watched him a couple of times, once when he scored a couple and made 5 shorts which KB scored from 2 and he set up the other goals which were scored.

Was there when EG played Southgate and Payne scored the fiercest reverse hit fron the edge of the D past the South African keeper who didn't see it and created 2 of the shorts which KB scored from.

Understand he likes to party to much, so this could be his down fall, However he looks extremly fit.

I bet if a top club got hold of him he walk the England team. EG not fashionable enough for Jason Lee as they only have Payne who eligible and good enough.

You are obviously an EG player. I still stand by my original posting that Payne is the only England prospect you have and who is eligible to be selected. Oxted will be promoted to nat 3 next season and it will only be a matter of time before your better 1st team players start to leave the club This will happen when your foriegn players go home. Oxted would be the the local choice, and we would welcome the two Payne brothers and Ashley Jackson the rest can go and play in the County leagues.

I agree Oxted look likely candidates for promotion. Getting into the national leagues is one thing, staying there is another. The Payne boys have Grinstead blood running through their veins and will end up playing VETS hockey before they decide to leave EG.

Why are you so anti EG ? is it jealousy ? or are you just another wind up merchant who posts on this site to get a reaction ? and create unnecessary friction between clubs & players. I BET YOU WERE THE SCHOOL BULLY BOY WHO ENDED UP HAVING NO FRIENDS.

Come down this Sunday to EG 1st team playing at home 1.00 p.m. and sample good hospitality and a few beers.

Instead of intelligent and provocative - yet sensible discussion lets descend into another bout of 'my club is better/friendlier/less arrogant/richer/has better kit' than yours type of debate.

Its not even funny.

Some people would like to see div2 players get more of a chance for england, some think some prem 1 players are overlooked.

I think that can be discussed maturely. Most of you will probably never even smell the sweat on an england or even national league shirt so leave the b!tching behind and ask questions, raise points etc that are worth talking about. Not whether EG are are a 2man team. They're blatantly not, it cant happen at that level.

This england squad is a very good squad and i hope they do well.
