Junior hockey men win 10-0
SANTIAGO DE LAS VEGAS, Cuba (CMC)-Trinidad and Tobago became the first of the three English-speaking Caribbean teams to post a victory at the Pan American men's junior hockey championship, when they trampled Puerto Rico 10-0 on Friday.
Kiel Murray led the way with a hat-trick (3rd, 16th and 39th minutes), and Alan Henderson (20th, 33rd) and Wayne Legerton (28th, 62nd) earned doubles, as T&T completely outstripped the Puerto Ricans and took an impregnable 7-0 half-time lead.
Mickell Pierre (24th), Jean-Paul Rambaran (26th), and Akim Toussaint (49th) also found the net for T&T.
The Soca Boyz were effective in all departments and even enjoyed a perfect four out of four record with their penalty corners in the first half, as Puerto Rico's defence let them down terribly.
Things did not change in the second period, although Puerto Rico earned nine penalty corners. T&T, however, remained steadfast under the pressure of a growing number of raids from the Puerto Ricans.
Jamaica, the other English-speaking Caribbean nation in action, suffered their second straight defeat, when hosts Cuba rolled them over 6-0.
The Jamaicans did well to limit the Cubans to a 2-0 half-time lead, but they could not restrict the home team in the second period when Ivan Makenci completed a hat-trick.
Jamaica's netminder Donovan Shakespeare kept his side in the contest over the first half with some spectacular work, as the Cubans earned nine penalty corners and succeeded in scoring only one.
Three goals in the space of 17 minutes, however, killed off any hopes of a Jamaica comeback or upset.
After Lazaro Aguilera had put the Cubans ahead in the 16th minute and Makenci had struck on half-hour, Orlando Quirola scored in the 43rd minute, and Makenci added strikes in the 52nd and 60th to put the game way beyond the Jamaicans.
Javier Gonzalez sealed the victory from a penalty corner one minute before the final whistle.
In other matches, Canada obtained a record 23-0 victory over Venezuela, with captain David Jameson leading the way with six goals and defender Jonathan Roberts banging in five penalty corners, while Chile defeated Mexico 5-0 to climb to the top of Group B.
Yesterday, an all-English-speaking Caribbean derby brought together Barbados and Jamaica, and the other match on the card was between Cuba and favourites Argentina.
