8th Men's Pan American Junior Championships Havana, Cuba - February 16 to 27, 2005

By Graciela H. Ortiz, PAHF Media Officer

In the most exciting match of the tournament until now, Mexico came from behind to defeat Canada 3-2 in the second game of the day.

Canada went to half-time with an undeserved 2-0 lead, but the Mexicans bettered their precision in the second half and showing a great stamina and speed won an incredible match.

The game started even, but step by step Mexico took control of midfield and play. Then, they reached Canada's circle several times, getting four penalty corners. However, they missed the chances because of bad execution.

However, Canada opened the score - in the 12th minute - through Mark Pearson.

A solo play by David Jameson finished in a penalty corner that Jonathan Roberts netted for the 2-0 lead, three minutes before half-time.

Mexico attacked from the very beginning of the second half, pressing Canada hard who counter-attacked.

Mexico's hopes reborn when Leopoldo Ríos Benítez closed the gap with a wonderful corner dragged shot, in the 46th minute.

Mexico improved the corners execution and thanks to one of them equalized, in the 56th minute, through Oscar Galván from a corner deflection.

Mexico increased the pressure and after an excellent rush through the right wing by Rubén Martínez, Jorge Gómez capitalized on a cross to put his team ahead, four minutes before the final whistle, taking the victory .

wow
I knew this would be a tough game....Mexican team is basically the same unit that looked sharp at the Pan Am Cup last summer....young and fast. Also a little surprised by the margains in the Chile win over Trinidad and the USA margain over Barbados. Canada in trouble now.

Looks like they didn't use any of there defenders off the bench as substitutes. Fatigue could have been an issue down the stretch. Playing with 10 guys for a stretch with no substitutions in the back in the heat is sometimes a recipe for disaster.

Come on boys... 4 guys with International Experience and a ton of talent.. we have to be better then this

This is brutal. Where's the swagger, the confidence? If you're Canada losing to Mexico should never ever be an option. The last time Canada lost to Mexico was 1971! Unacceptable especially considering the senior team experience and the apparent "saviours" of Canadian field hockey. Put up or go home boys. The results will speak for themselves. Stats will only take you so far eventually you'll actually have to win something. Backs are against the wall now, let's see what these Canadians are made of.

mild upset
Mexico will be in by whipping Chile tomorrow....Canada needs Chile to win for sure. Mexico is on the rise. Bad loss for Canada...real bad.
Don't know about Cuba....since there is no chance they have the money to go to the Netherlands even if they qualify someone better be checking the birth certificates of the players they put on the pitch in Havana....what have they got to lose by putting gray beards out there. Argentina much better than any other team.

WTF?
I honestly hope that none of the Canaian boys read this website EVER but ESPECIALLY when they are on a tour. People who should not have an opion rant and rave on this site and it is always negative. I think it is a good site for a joke here and there but the atheltes should NOT read this as it will only depress them from the lack of support that they receive from their fellow coutnry men.

I'm cheering for the boys and for Canaian hockey regards off what others write here.

GO CANADA!!!

This shouldnt be any surprise toanyone...The way things are goaing in Canada, the only expectation from the Canadian field hockey team tha we should all have is that they should good legs, afetr all ll they care about is teh beep test, skill doenst mean anything anymore. I think they should take this canadian team and put them in track and field....they should do better and teat where they belong
