Nairobi Gymkhana escaped being expelled from the Kenya Hockey Union national league at the weekend when they honoured their match against Nairobi Institute at the Nairobi Simba Union ground on Sunday.

On Saturday, the KHU had warned Nairobi Gymkhana of dire consequences if they failed to play against Nairobi Institute. They had already forfeited a match against Park Road and missing a second would have resulted in an automatic suspension.

The KHU had put Kenya Polytechnic and Strathmore University on standby, but Nairobi Gymkhana paid a Sh15,000 fine for missing one match and turned up to face Nairobi Institute, who beat them 3-0. Anthony Ngethe (third minute), Eric Angara (43rd) and Cosmas Lwanga (63rd) scored for Nairobi Institute.

In the meantime, Armed Forces have set the pace in the Premier League as Kenya Police and Nairobi Simba Union stumbled. The soldiers, who face Nairobi Simba on Saturday at the Nairobi Simba Union ground, won their opening match 3-0 against Wazalendo and are poised to add to their tally three more.

The return of Kisumu Simba has spiced up the competition. They maintained a stubborn domination at their homeground and edged out Kenya Police.

It could take sometime before Nairobi Simba Union regain their poise. A disastrous start against Karate Axiom last Saturday should be giving their captain Imran Chaudhry sleepless nights. He is optimistic that the youthful side will bounce back and regain respect.

The surprise women's league leaders are Impala, thanks to their solid 6-1 start against debutants United States International University - Africa and a merited 2-2 draw against Mombasa Sports Club. Also perched near the top are Mombasa Sports Club.

Intense competition is also evident in the National League where Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, Park Road and GreenSharks are set to dominate.

The league action returns on Saturday with an expected thriller between last year's champions Telkom and Sliders at the Nairobi Simba Union ground. Also, the two Mombasa teams taste league action for the first time this season hosting Wazalendo and JKUAT.

Doreen Nyagah from Impala is the leading scorer with three goals. Dorcillah Agunda (Sliders) and Esta Mwikali (MSC) each have two goals. In the Premier League, Asad Shah (Karate Axiom) leads with two goals while Frank Omondi (JKUAT) also has the same number of goals in the National League.
