Great Britain and England forward Barry Middleton and former international Tina Cullen have been named players of the year for 2004.
Middleton, a 21-year-old student at Loughborough University, was one of GB's few positives at a disappointing Olympics in Athens and he also helped his club Cannock to the Premier League title and a silver medal at the European Cup-Winners Cup.
"I was surprised and honoured to receive the news of the award and at my age to be following in the footsteps of so many of Britain's great players, including seven gold medallists," said the Doncaster-born player who made his senior international debut in June 2003 and has racked up 74 appearances already.
"I am greatly indebted to the start I was given at Hall Cross School and Doncaster Hockey Club, especially people like (former coaches) Alan Stoves and Leigh Hodgson for giving me a chance in the first team when I was so young."
Cullen, 34, had an extremely successful year as player-coach of Hightown, who won the Premier Division - in which she was the leading scorer - the Cup and the Premiership play-off tournament.
It is the second time the teacher from Southport's Greenbank High School has won the award, having been successful in 1999.
"I was very surprised but delighted to win this prestigious award, particularly at my age and for the second time but really it is a team success," said the former GB and England striker with 205 caps and 74 international goals.

tina cullen
Congrats to Tina, she is a very talented player and this award is well deserved. I can not understand why players of this calibre get left out of the Eng team and are then forced into retirement. Her name amongst a few others should be there even now!!

I totally agree i cannot understand either why a player of her calibre is not playing..... its important to get a balance of youth and experience which i feel the current england team lack.... they need a few more experienced players to show the younger ones how its done.

Maybe because as well as being a good player she also has a poor attitude? Not saying she is the only one but could be a reason why she was not included in CWG!!

I do agree with both of you that we should have a mixture of experience but does she want to keep playing? The stresses of training at international level, especially in an amateur sport, can be demanding not to mention time consuming! I think its great that we can honour and respect a player who has retired from the international scene and they are not just forgotten whilst the next young player is "bigged up" when they are still yet to really prove themselves!

Tina was forced to retire at the time, after recieving no support from tricia, with tina in the commonwealth team they would of won gold not silver. I don't think she could come bak now but i think at the end of her international career she could of been treated alot better than she was, and as for attitude, i think tina's attitute has been fantasic after being dropped so un expextedly she picked her self up became player coach and went on to win nevery domestic out door trophy there was too win with her club. Congratualtions for winning a well deserve award, anyone that knocks you are only jealous of your ability and success.

No doubt she has done very well with Hightown and she does indeed deserve this award but I just wish she could learn to control that infamous whining!!
