Hopes of the Nairobi hockey junior players making their international debut went up in smoke yesterday.

The visiting Seychelles national under-20 team cut short their tour of Kenya, thus affecting three international friendly matches which were scheduled to start in Nairobi yesterday.

Kenya Hockey Union (KHU) secretary general Peter Kiruma said the visitors could not honour the programme because five of their players were unwell.

"We regret that the Seychellois will not be available to play any match in Nairobi as five of their players fell sick while in Mombasa," he said.

Kiruma said the five players, who were down with a bout of malaria, were admitted to a Mombasa hospital and later discharged after treatment.

The Seychelles team had played a series of matches against Mombasa teams last week and was due to end their tour with matches in Nairobi on Wednesday.

According to a programme released by the KHU, the visitors were to play Nairobi Schools Select team at Ruaraka yesterday and participate in the Short Corners tournament at the same venue.

They were to meet Nairobi under-20 side at Simba Union Club today before winding up their tour with a match against Schools Select side at the same venue on Wednesday.

Kiruma said the team returns home today.

Meanwhile, the KHU has organised an umpiring and coaching clinic at Thika High School on Friday.

Elsewhere, a two-day inter-school tournament gets underway at Kakamega High School on Friday.
