The Trinidad and Tobago hockey women endured an ordinary 2004 international season after suffering early elimination at April's Pan American Cup in Barbados.
There might be some encouragement, though, in the form of five of their young United States-based players.
Notre Dame's Curlyne Wynn, Ventures' Yesenia Luces and the Maritime Checkers trio of Patricia Borneo, Sekayi Liburd and Pemba Ramdoo performed creditably for their respective collegiate teams in the recently-concluded United States NCAA Field Hockey Championship.
Wynn, Luces, Borneo and Ramdoo have represented Trinidad and Tobago at senior international level, while Liburd has represented the T&T under-21s.
The 23-year-old Wynn, a versatile ex-North East College utility player with clever ball handling skills, shone brightest as she won Big Ten All Star Team selection in her second successive season for her exploits with Ohio State.
Wynn, who made her Notre Dame senior debut at the age of 12, might hope to push on and become the third Trinidad and Tobago player to get NCAA All American honours next season-a feat managed by Carib Magnolias striker and 2004 T&T Player of the Year Stacey Siu Butt and Malvern midfielder Sherlan Cabralis, who are both past national captains.
However, Borneo, Liburd, Ramdoo and Luces would be pleased with their efforts as well.
The speedy 21-year-old Borneo paced the University of Massachusetts to the Atlantic 10 final and earned a spot on the region's All Star Team in the process.
Borneo, a former St Augustine Girls' High School (SAGHS) striker, was also named on the National Academic Team for the third consecutive season for her combined efforts in the classroom and on the playing field.
Liburd, another SAGHS alumni, also earned regional honours at Hofstra University where she forms a local triangle alongside Ramdoo and Ventures defender Ayanna McLean.
Liburd, a composed 23-year-old defender, was selected on the 2004 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) All Tournament Team and the National Academic squad, while Ramdoo, a skillful former South East Port of Spain Secondary attacker, managed a "Rookie of the Week" award.
Luces, a former St Joseph's Convent (PoS) student enjoyed a memorable rookie season as well alongside Wynn as she led Ohio State scorers and was regularly in the conference top ten lists for goals scored and points.
