Title aspirants Mohammedan Sporting Club are in joint second position of the Green Delta Premier Hockey League with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over lowly Sonali Bank at the Maulana Bhasani Hockey Stadium in the city on Saturday, reports UNB.
With the day’s win, Mohammedan took their points tally to 19 from eight matches same as holders Abahani Limited. Both the teams are now five points adrift of Usha Krira Chakra, who finished top of the first round with 24 points from nine outings.
Abahani and Mohammedan will meet each other in their last match on Tuesday.
After the barren first half, Mamunur Rahman Chayan scored the match-winner in the 46th minute from a penalty corner.
But credit must go to Sonali Bank who denied their superior opponents a total command of the match.
Mohammedan earned only one penalty corner in the first half that reflected the determination of the Sonali Bank defence.
Failing to score in the first half, the winners regrouped and displayed better performance in the second half.
At last, Mohammedan had the only success of the match in the 46th minute as was on target from a penalty corner (1-0).
In the other match of the day, Azad Sporting Club registered a 3-1 victory over Wari Club at the same venue.
After the goal-less first half, Rimon Ghosh, Sheikh Nannu and Syed Al Masum scored for the winners while Sajjad Hossain scored the consolation goal for Wari.
Rimon put Azad ahead in the 37th minute with a field goal (1-0) and captain Nannu doubled the margin in the 40th minute (2-0) while Masum took the match out of Wari’s reach by scoring the third goal in the 59th minute.
Just before the final whistle, Sajjad reduced the margin for Wari in the 69th minute with a field goal.
There will be no match of the Green Delta Premier Hockey League today (Sunday).
