EGYPTIAN hockey star Ahmed Mahmoud has signed for Reading.

The 23-year-old winger, nicknamed Mishoo, played for his country in the Athens Olympics, where they finished 12th.

But Egypt are undoubtedly the top hockey nation on their own Continent, having dominated the African Cup in recent years.

He also plays for Sharquia, the most successful club side in Egypt.

Wanting to improve his hockey, he recently travelled to England and is now staying with relatives in Woodley, close to the Reading ground.

?He turned up at the club last weekend with a registration form for Canterbury, but said he was interested in joining us,? said coach Pat Land.

?He will bring different skills into the group which should be good.

?Mishoo sounds very committed and wants to further his career in England. He will certainly have his chance with us.

?We are not badly off for forwards, but there is a chance we could lose players to international commitments so we need plenty of strength in depth.?

Mahmoud will be one of Reading?s two overseas players, replacing Australian Keegan Smith, who is now working with the London Broncos rugby league team as a sports massage specialist.

Mishoo met some of his new team-mates and management team at a reception held this week at club sponsors Reading Audi, at their Rose Kiln Lane offices and showroom.

Land presented the company?s head of business, Mike Murphy, with a framed team picture and signed shirt as well as a dummy dressed in hockey goalkeeper?s gear which they will put on display in their showroom.

?In an amateur sport we try to do things as professionally as we can, and linking up with Audi is highly beneficial to us,? said Land.

?They are a top-quality brand and we are a top-quality side.?

Murphy added: ?We are delighted to be involved with one of the most successful hockey sides in Europe.

?Audi and Reading have both had a tremendously successful year and we are looking forward to continued success in 2005.?

Reading have reached the halfway stage of the season unbeaten.

They head the Premier table, are in the last eight of the HA Cup and in May will represent England in the European Clubs Championship in Amsterdam.

?We have so much to look forward to in the next few months,? added Land, who only took over the reins this season following the departure of top coach Jon Copp to Racing Club de Paris.

Reading don?t resume their league and cup programme until the last weekend of January, but in the meantime they will be playing in the Premier Division of the Higgins Group Indoor League.

Their matches take place at Kidderminster over the weekends of January 15-16 and January 22-23 with the finals taking place at Crystal Palace on Friday February 4.

"But Egypt are undoubtedly the top hockey nation on their own Continent, having dominated the African Cup in recent years"

Thats a load of balderdash. There has not been an africa cup since 2000, which South Africa won. For the record:

1999 All African Games Johannesburg South Africa 4 Egypt 0
2000 African Cup of Nations Bulawayo South Africa Sa 3-Egypt 2
2003 All African Games Nigeria Pool Match SA 2- Egypt 0
All African Games Nigeria Final SA 2-Egypt-3
2003 Afro-Asian Games Hyderabad SA 3-Egypt 2
2004 Olympics SA 5-Egypt 1

1 win in 6 games. Goal for Egypt 7 Goal against Egypt 19

Lets not get ahead of ourselves here....

Reading along with a great many clubs pay expenses and wave subs to entice the better players to their clubs and of course the promise of rapid exposure to Jason Lee's mob.
This alone versus clubs who charge a net net yearly subscription average £400 p.a. and have to pay their own traveling expenses equals a payment of approx £2.400 per season.
Now tell everybody again Reading don't have financial inducements to entice players to both their 1st & 2nd team squads. Wrap the package how you like, but don't bulls**t.

walk like an egyptian!
Some facts. I was at the Sonning Lane club when the Egyptian arrived with his uncle who lives nearby. He had been to a club near Liverpool on the promise of top hockey and some remuneration, and had returned after a few weeks when he found that things were not as he had hoped! He moved in with his uncle near Reading, his only relative in the country, and heard that there was a hockey club at Reading, so he visited at the earliest opportunity. Obviously what he saw was rather different from what he had seen to date in this country, with the exception of Canterbury, who had offered him the opportunity to play for them but the travelling would have been impossible. His enquiries in the bar at Reading were passed on to the 1st team management who offered him the opportunity to join the club and train with them in the New Year, no guarantees on a team place, no money, just an opportunity. It was accepted. Very simple so why not keep it so. This is a young player who has been given the chance to play top hockey for a few months, and possibly more if he so wishes, it will be interesting to see what he can achieve. He could probably have joined other clubs who would have paid him, but he has made a tough decision which could just prove to be a very good one, good luck to him!

Work Permit
Does this man have a work permit, what basis did he enter the country and he hopefully realises he needs a work permit to receive money for coaching. If Reading are paying him 2400 a year by subisdising him then again he will need a work permit. He is not from a commonwealth country and has no right to be here.

I guess if assumptions are made, questions asked later (questions that you don't seem to really want to know the answer to anyway) then your name may be appropriate.

"He is not from a Commonwealth Country and has no right to be here" - unless you work for some government department, I suggest we disregard your accusations and give the man the benfefit of the doubt.

Re: solicited player
Your comment could not be further from the truth. Everything that you claim to be fact in your post is the complete opposite of the truth!

All of Readings players, myself included, have paid subs to be a member of the club, to the same level as everyone else in the club. We all pay match fees to play at the weekends and we all pay to travel to games (apart from those in the squad who are in full time education). On top of this, there is the sizeable cost of travelling to Europe each season (hopefully). The cost of this I can assure you is immense and this cost, although heavily subsidised from various sources, has to be meat by the 1st team playing group. So, your estimate that each player in effect recieves £2400 for playing a season at Reading is categorically wrong! Indeed, I would be willing to bet that Reading players spend more money per season on playing hockey than any other side in the country!

You also seem to suggest that joining Reading will guarantee a place in the England squad. Have you stopped to consider that only two players from Readings team that won the European cup in 2003 (first English team in 23 years to do so) were selected to represent GB at the Olympics in Athens? In the curretn England squad, there are only three players from Reading. I'm not suggesting that everyone in our squad should be selected, nor am I suggesting that anymore should have been selected in the past, but the continual whining from misinformed people on this forum bores me to tears!

So, before you go accusing people who join Reading of taking the easy option, looking for money and cheep international caps, can I suggest you think twice in future!

You can wrap the bull$@*t how you like - the truth is more interesting!

I cant believe that people still believe that WE are paid to play etc etc etc.
Like the post from READING PLAYER i can back up his statements that we pay our yearly subs to the club BEFORE the end of October and are subject to the fines imposed by the club for late payment.
We also pay the £8 per match like everyone else.
We got no petrol money, we all have to contribute to our trips to europe.
We will all have to pay for hotels involved in the 3 weeks of the indoor season.

And to prove the point, if this SOLICITED PLAYER were to look at our match programme he'd see that we are all individually sponsored by local business', the majority of which were found by the players themselves!

"Now tell everybody again Reading don't have financial inducements to entice players to both their 1st & 2nd team squads"..........NO WE DONT!

The package is to play for one of the best clubs in England - NO B******T!!!!

As chairman of the club, I have often been tempted to correct some of the wilder accusations about Reading HC and surprised that the players have been so restrained in the past. For the record, I confirm that both "Reading Player" and Mani are both speaking the truth. Those of you who bear us ill feeling will have to find some other rod to beat us with.

As for the level of our membership contributions, Interested Party, the information is freely available on our website at www.readinghockeyclub.org.uk. Sharkia Hockey Club
Sharkia is the most respected African Hockey Club, it has won the Club Championships for more than 12 years on the trot. Yes, it is indeed a professional club and forms the core of the Egyptian Hockey Team, it has produced some of the best International players like Magdi Abdallah. Africa has alot of talent, what it lacks is the facilities, play an African team like Kenya on a Grass pitch, and you might be taught a lesson in hockey.

And I'm not an Egyptian, but have played against Sharkia in the Club championships. So don't look down on African teams just coz they don't have what you have.

Ask your mangers about paying players, indirect payments have been made for years. You should look into it properly. BTW if your players pay their own way, why do you need a sponsor? Generous out of pocket expenses are declared by MP's, some have lost their jobs to it. Sorry to let you know the truth but sounds like you have been duped pal.

BTW Clinton did not have @#$ual relations with that women, its all in the wording, however I am sure your file has been passed to the revenue and you will be exonerated for not having a clue.

Are the car subsidies mentioned on players P11d forms or do you still prefer to keep our good bearded friends payments as cash?

Biggot etc
I think it fair to say that some clubs do have to pay players to attract the kind of quality required to remain in the National League. I dont disagree with this but believe that a number of the clubs doing it should be persuaded to put more into attracting youngsters into the game rather than the quick fix foreigner.

Reading, Cannock etc I am sure are able to attract players purely because of who they are and the opportunities and facilities available. I was fortunate enough to be offered a refund of expenses to play for my home town club when I moved away to Uni and then again when I moved with work and I see no problem with this. Nor do I see a problem with lower league sides investing in the experienced player to assist. But clubs must be aware of the pitfalls this brings if it is done to the detriment of club spirit or secure finances!

Get off Reading's back support them and our other elite clubs in their European forays and have respect for Mini Mani Kochar who is man enough to give his name to the posts - Willow salutes you sir!!!

What rubbish you talk. Invest in young talent, that is precisely what our club does and then guess what ? you've got it !! the big clubs poach them or they are told to move by the English team managers/coaches otherwise they will not be concidered for international honours. That is why the top 3 national div 1 clubs are head & shoulders better than the rest.

Scenirio: If there were more teams able to compete weekly with each other (rather than the top 3) this would improve English hockey with a greater number of players capable of attracting the attention of Leeboy and being offered assessments / trials.

Yes, being a citizen of a Commonwealth country I would know and understand this. However, you have made the assumption that 'he has no right to be here' purely because he is from Egypt and not from a Commonwealth country. Whilst your first question is a valid one, your 'statement' of above said is just speculation and taunting. It is correct to assume that you have no idea what his visa status is, hence the query. But it is not necessary to slander the man!

You are living in a world of butterflies and rainbows. The better players will always look to play at the better clubs as to be the best you must have ambition as an individual.

I played with Barry Middleton for years and was sad to see him leave for Cannock but completely understood why he had to. He has become a better player for it.

The Scenario you suggest will only come about if the number of internationals are limited per team and that is just plain unrealistic. We have lost so much impetus since the Seoul gold and are just not attracting enough school kids to the game and that is what I believe the money we pay mediocre foreigners should be going towards. But that is for the clubs to decide and their members as I do not think that England Hockey have the where with all to shake it up.

Maybe once we have a strong pipeline of juniors we will be able to establish a more competitive league structure and attract the better quality of foreigner from Aus, Holland etc and really improve English Hockey!

Club player stop moaning about inequality and provide some thought and options its easy to sit back and be negative but try thinking of a solution and look at why the juniors are leaving!!

That include little "bonus win payments". I would suggest that your club is not alone but to protest your innocence is ridiculous. Best course of action would be to remain silent then these comments would wash over but to remark on them simply adds fuel to the fire that something is going on.

Why is everyone so bothered about Reading paying or not paying its players?

Does it really matter??

So what if they are reimbursed expenses, lots of other clubs do it. So what if they are paid, lots of other players are. Sounds to me like the green eyed monster posted most of the responses!!

And for the record I am not a Reading player or supporter and acyually found the team quite arrogant when they visited the Cabbage Patch a couple of years ago but they are one of if not the best side in England...and Europe...and for that they have my support!!
