FOUR of Zimbabwe's best hockey players are set to go to India next month to play in the newly-established Premier League Hockey in the populous Asian country.
Hockey Association of Zimbabwe president Custom Kachambwa said the four will join players from other hockey playing nations.
"India has sent an invitation to all hockey playing nations to send their top players for their Premier Hockey League.
"This is an all-expenses paid for trip with the players set to get 2 000 euros each at the end of the league in February," said Kachambwa.
HAZ, Kachambwa said, asked clubs to nominate their top players, who were, in turn, subjected to a rigorous assessment before the final four were picked.
HAZ is also hopeful that the exposure that the players will get in India will come in handy when they are picked for the national team on their return.
According to the Indo-Asian News Service, the idea for a Premier Hockey League was mooted more than five years ago but is now only expected to start on January 13, 2005, in Hyderabad.
Almost 20 foreign players drawn from South Africa, Pakistan, the Netherlands, South Korea, Spain and Nigeria will join their counterparts in India for the league programme.
The news service said they would be 10 teams with five teams in the Premier Division while an equal number would be playing in the First Division.
Maratha Warriors, Chennai Veerans, Hyderabad Sultans, Sher-e-Jalandhar and Bangalore High-Flyers will comprise the Premier Division teams.
The First Division will consist of Delhi Dazzlers, Lucknow Nawabs, Imphal Rangers, Bengal Tigers and Chandigarh Dyn amos.
The India Hockey Federation described the setting up of a league as "a landmark journey of recapping the glory of hockey and rebuilding India's supremacy in the game internationally".
Meanwhile, HAZ will host an All-Comers Indoor Hockey Festival at the Stodart Complex in Mbare on Sunday.
Video footage of the proceedings will be sent to the International Hockey Federation as part of a development promotion.

university hockey
i am the university of zimbabwe's hockey president and i think there is a lot that zimbabwe can do in hockey if given the chance.the only way it can be done is by getting the players a lot of exposure and i am glad to say that simbarashe hove one of our students is amongst the 4 best players and will be glad to see what he will bring from lndia.
we need to get universities in the region involved and we hope FIH can get to support international university tournaments so that the game goes on and can become a career for some of our talented players.
will keep checking this site and hope to get support from other hockey playing nations!!!

I think it is a great opportunity for younger players to be afforded this privilege. I hope they enjoy the experience and are able to give something back to a sport struggling to surivive. May I ask who the other players are and how they were selected?

As far as I know, there has not been an official announcement as to who will be going from Zimbabwe yet. Mashonaland Hockey Board has put in its nominations and I think HAZ are still waiting for nominations from Matebeleland and Midlands. The names of the four were supposed to have been anounced after the HAZ AGM at the begining of December. The AGM has been postponed to early January.

SELECTION
I THINK THIS IS A VERY GOOD IDEA ESCPECIALLY FOR AFRICA. WE IN KENYA THINK THAT WE SHOULD ALSO BE GIVEN THIS CHANCE AS WE ARE ALSO GOOD IN HOCKEY AND OUR LEAGUE IS QUITE COMPETITIVE. OUR NATIONAL LADIES TEAM WERE IN HYBERBAD AND THEY PERFORMED QUITE WELL.
PLEASE DO CONSIDER KENYA ALSO AS ITS A FAST PLAYING NATION AND WE DO HAVE VERY GOOD PLAYERS WITH GOOD/BRIGHT FUTURES IN SPORT (HOCKEY)

THE UGANDAN EXPERIENCE
Iam a third year medical student at Makerere university also the cahirman of Makerere university Stingers hockey club, kampala but like all the youth players in uganda, i have great passion for OUR game hockey. Unfortunately hockey down here is, if developing, at the slowest rate. For the 6 years i have actively participated in hockey as a player and a self motivated coach with no formal training in the activities i do in the sport, Uganda has had only six clubs paticipating in the league. Few efforts( which i acknowledge and appreciate) have been done. All the clubs are concetrated in Kampala( the capital city) with no upcountry clubs to compete. They use the same ground for htarining which also doubles as the national stadium.
ANyway, the experience is a poor one and i can only blame it on former President Amin who expeled asians who wre a determining force in the sport down here. A few asians are involved in uganda hockey todate, not because they are not a part of us , the morale is low. hope with the synthetic turf things will become brighter. My appeal to you all is that Wherever you are in the world and you think you are in position to help the ugandan hockey fraternity the do so NOW We will be greatful.
with love. jeewochu@yahoo.co.uk/ejewochu@med.mak.ac.ug
