this league sucks, its not what people say it is. who is playing on the toronto team. i heard they are bringing some old school guys, like johnny, kamal and gary. is this kamal the same guy that went to play in england a few years ago didn't he play with the lions. toronto has no chance in this league even though its not very competitive.

Look out gary singh has cut his hair since his national debut in Liepzig, he is more aerodynamic and lighter on his feet since his Atkins diet. I hope he is not like Sampson because than he will lose all his strength

While it may be true that "There might be one american (sic) who could make the toronto (sic) second team" it is not only the American's that Toronto have to worry about. The men's league is full of Europeans, and there are even some Canadians. If Toronto are up to it the league welcomes the challenge.

To (so called) fan
When you say "this league sucks, its not what people say it is. who is playing on the toronto (sic) team. i (sic) heard they are bringing some old school guys" do you mean that because you don't think the players that you have heard are on the team are any good that therefore the league is a waste of time? Are you judging a league based on players who haven't even played in the league? Why don't you wait and see how they do?

The league probably has the highest quality indoor hockey that you will see outside Europe.

If the "old school guys" that Toronto are bringing are very experienced indoor players that sounds like a sensible thing to do when they are entering an established league that has a lot of very experienced players.

Carolyn - re: Boston
The Boston women are looking good but not so sure about the men, last year they just pipped NY, with a little help from other teams and it seems that the other teams have been re-tooling, especially NY.

It should be an interesting season especially with the addition of Toronto.

Hey, man, if you don't like it, don't watch, play or even talk about it. Even better, create your own league and get some kick ass teams, then make them play the NAPL and prove that you are right. Till then just be quiet.
By the way, sorry about my english, i'm one of the foreigners playing on the league!

I feel there is no way an american team can win unless they do what bush did in the elections...rig it! I am a former canadian national team player who has never lost to an american team, including thier national team. im not trying to diss the americanz skill level, but it doesnt matter how old a canadian team is but we just cant lose...if the candian club loses, it would be because of internal problems such as drinking the night before a game......but come on my us broz try hard and bring ur level of play up to match the "old" canadian players....good luck in trying to prove me wrong!

Re: Simba and Fan
Personally, I don't think the teams from DC, Philly, Boston and New York are going to want to take on the financial burden or time needed to travel to Western Canada for a weekend tourney.

Going to Toronto this year is actually the furtherst trip for most of the teams and therefore the most expensive. I don't know who will be on the montreal team this year, last year the men's side had Canadians but I know the women's side were primarily from the US mid-atlantic and south. Plus most of the people who play are committed to full time weekday jobs.

It would be fun to go, but just not very fesible. Just my thought.
Good luck trying though.

NAPL is great
It's always amazing to hear people whine when something positive is done for Hockey, when they have nothing of their own to offer. I play in the league and am very happy that we are including our friends from Toronto as well this season. I don't know of any indoor league in the world where so many people will travel so far give up a lot of time and spend lots of their own money for the love of the game! That is what it's all about at the end of the day. Too much focus in the USA has been on national team development (who suck) and the obvious missing elements, leagues to develope playing, coaching and umpire talent have been totally ignored by the incompetent USFHA. If Toronto dominate the men's division which I think will be harder than they might expect, it doesn't matter because the overall standard of Indoor hockey in North America will go up and that can only be a good thing. I take my hat of to all involved in the NAPL for demonstrating what can be achieved as a community. Let's make this the best year yet and continue this positive progress.

I don't think the Toronto guys think it will be easy at all, I was talking to a few of them and they are looking forward to it, saying it will be really fun and tough. They are just hoping that they can get players for all 4 weekends. I think they are struggling a bit to get their quality players for all 4 weekends.
When I talked to Kenny he said he has never really partied in Philly.

NAPL is definitely going to be wide open this year, with Toronto (whoever they bring - Smitty with his walking frame?) all the squads with new faces and Boston minus some of their old ones, but at the end of the day we know who wins the drinking. Do your talking on the pitch guys. Lets hope it's competitive....

Re: League Player from US
You shouldn't put your own country down (usfha). It sounds as though you were pased over for selection for something. Instead of putting down the US effort, you should be trying to help it. This league is a good effort for field hockey advancement. Instead of using it to help yourself. You can help the usfha by doing something positive for them. They seem to be doing a better job each year that goes by by advancing their most athletic players. Hopefully coaching will catch up and they will do better internationally. In the meantime, they need your help, not your selfish attitude and bashing.

reply to Bakii
Bakii, firstly I was not passed over for any selection since I am not eligible as a non citizen. I am helping the league by being part of it and praising and promoting a LEAGUE in the US, that has been formed by people who know what hockey is about. There is nothing for to me gain, accept to have a better league for all to play in the US including myself, and hopefully by children who will grow up here will one day be able to play for a national team that can compete. The USHFA just doesn't get it. The national team will get no where until you pull your head out of the sand and get real and prompt and support leagues in the US. Face facts, the majority of the US mens Indoor team stuggle to make the starting line up of an NAPL side. They need leagues to continue developing, coaching is only part of the puzzle. Your response is typical of a USFHA bureaucrat who make half hearted attempts and accomplish very little. It is time you woke up and acknowledged, that you have failed to create an indoor league in this country depite the success on the men qualifying for the first indoor world cup You failed, so people who love this game took the lead and have shown what is possible. You also continue to fail to prompt and create adult outdoor leagues. Your feable attempt is nothing more than a club championship last year, which was off the calender for almost 10 year and the National Festivel on grass, but a lot of fun (which i also played in to help prompt hockey). The national team, ahh what have they done? the men, embarrased by every decent International team on the planet. The women, whom we have the largest playing base in the world, what are they doing? What happens to women who graduate from college, who don't make it to the national team level immediately, where do they go and play? Nowhere, that's why the US sucks as a nation at hockey. I hope the US hockey community continues to grow and gains strenght, by side stepping the USFHA and creating our leagues independent of the USFHA, until they actively give something back, instead of always asking us for ideas and contribution. Simple example, if you are so proud of the USFHA and their advancement of the most athletic players. How many NAPL teams now in their third season are member or offiliated with the USFHA? None! Every thought about asking why? Because you offer nothing! So get over yourself, and if you are really serious so something and stop talking like the community has shown you how!

response to League Player's reply to Bakii
I agree with League Player. NAPL is a great competitive league - founded by strong-minded and strong-willed leaders from east coast club teams. There is no other league like this in the country. The first season, there were only four teams (Boston, Philly, DC, and NY) and the Canadians caught wind of it and joined in. NAPL has expanded each year by one team - a pretty good success rate for a new league. USFHA is wondering how on earth this league was formed! It takes some really dedicated people, but USFHA is not dedicated to developing club teams. USFHA says it is dedicated to developing its national teams but they are not doing a very good job. The Futures programs is subpar, focusing more on how many girls they can get to their sites (read: money they can make) instead of focusing on quality of instruction. It is clubs around the country that work on developing talent, not the USFHA. And it is clubs like those that started NAPL that will continue to generate and showcase the talent. The next step to take, I believe, is for each region in the US to develop their own premier league and perhaps the league winners will compete for national recognition.

USFHA
Some interesting comments above about the USFHA. Interesting to see on their web site that the first bullets from their mission statement read:

-Foster and develop the amateur sport of field hockey
-Provide participation and development opportunities for players, coaches, officials and administrators

Yet there is not even a mention on their website about the NAPL. Sharon Taylor staylor@eagle.lhup.edu is the president of the USFHA, I would be curious what her strategy is?

USFHA -Futures
I would concur with the above stated comments regarding the USFHA's lack of involvement in a developmental program in the United States. It would seem apparent to me that with the focus of the USFHA to "regionalize" that they would also support the NAPL concept. Additionally, the comment above about the subpart Futures program is also true. Has anyone involved with the program since its inception, observed the average play by our players? You would think that the National team would have improved now that the program is in it's 12th (I believe)year of existance. Seems as if our National team was better prior to the Futures program. Why? Because teaching was more important than using teenagers to gain financial support for the National team. Too bad we have taken away quality coaching for dollars and cents. Let's change the Futures program....let us get involved in leagues such as the NAPL. USFHA, help the game of hockey grow, not die.

NAPL and USFHA
Observer - it's not quite true that USFHA do not mention NAPL.

Buried deep in their web-site is a page with information for the Indoor National Team Trials:

http://www.usfieldhockey.com/programs/elite/indoor/wom_indoor_trial_info.htm

where it says -
"In our effort to keep cost to a minimum, trials are being held near Philadelphia to coincide with the NAPL Indoor Hockey League, as many players and officials will be attending this event."

As you can see they are 100% behind it.
