Go Duke?!
What happened to all the Duke lovers? Not a single post after the loss? No words of encouragment or a pick-me-up? Is it all about winning for you? Not about having fun playing a game while earning a degree worth $160,000 US? Not about the experience? Of course they play to win, but winning isn't everything. The way I hear it the girls are glad the season is finally over. I wonder why that is?

Get a life. Some of us don't live to post criticism on a hockey forum. As for the final, there isn't another NCAA team who would have beat Wake on Sunday. They played superb hockey and my congratulations go out to them. At the same time, I congratulate Duke for being the last to fall in the NCAA tournament for the second straight year. And Anon, if you were there, you would have seen the Duke players were indeed having fun. Great year, Devils. Hope you get there again next year!

Wake Forest/Duke
Wake deserved their "third straight NCAA championship". They are a great team. Your need to throw out a few "cracks" obviously and jealously targeting the Duke coach, however, prove you to be a low person indeed. Don't wonder about the girls at Duke, who are very happy to play this year and NEXT, when they'll again compete for a national championship. My posts were so passionate because it would have been great to have won the thing and rubbed it in the face of precisely people such as yourself. As it is, Duke finished second in the country, which is a whole lot better than any team accept Wake Forest. Not too shabby a season for a coach/team who you have so much contempt for. Who did better? Not UNC, not any team in the big ten, not Old Dominion, not Maryland. No, Duke had a better season than all of those. And unless you are a Wake Forest fan, Duke had a better season than the team you support. I'd say this was a successful season. But, let me say that in that game Sunday, the better team won the game and Wake Forest deserves to be the National Champions

Go Duke?!
"The way I hear it the girls are glad the season is finally over. I wonder why that is?" I am sure they are glad the season is over as is every player. Win or lose, fun or not, the season is long and grueling and needs to be balanced with the demands of school and whatever social life is left after practice and study. There is a lot of emotion going on at that age and the contest on the field is only one aspect of what is happening to the development of the player as a person. Playing time, success, failure, confrontation, fairness, unfairness, coaches' snubs, coaches' praise, competing responsibilities and parents who can't let go all form a melange of experience that affect a player at any level at any school. Season is over, time for an emotional respite, time to study for finals and time to move on. A salute to all who made it to the Final Four and a salute to all who tried to get there, especially UNC.

Jeez you know you're all right. EXCEPT that lets see.... before the season 4 seniors quit. Ummmm what else.... one senior never got to play, EVEN on senior's weekend! And that was during a weekend they won games 11-0 and 13-0 respectively AND used an out player to "practice" an extra man situation. Hmmmm..... Beth rarely used subs and regularly only played 13 of her available players... Her goalie has a back problem and made her play through it even after she had back surgery in the off season. The list goes on and on and on and on. I love the Duke players. I don't like the coach. This is a game people. Yes games are meant to be won. But at what cost? At the cost of alienating girls on the team? At the cost of embarrassing a senior whose parents came all the way out to Duke to see her play? At the cost of someone's back?! Learn the facts, talk to the team IN PRIVATE and then maybe you'll have some relevant rebuttal for me.

Same Old Beth?--That is Really too Bad
I was getitng very mellow and ready to leave the season behind but then you mentioned kickerback weekend. That was about as bad as it gets. hands down, no excuses, no explanations. There have been numerous posts on this forum on the sportsmanship (or lack thereof) shown on those occasions. I have yet to see anyone associated with Duke defend those decisions. Duke posters above feel free, because I just don't understand the thought process that would cause anyone to run powerplays when up 13-0 and 10-0. The public personna changed after she got drilled on this forum; I had hoped that the private personna changed as well because she has the talent to be a great coach ("We thought we were going to be hammered and yelled at,” sophomore Cara-Lynn Lopresti [gee what would make you think that?] said. “But she really brought up the morale of the team..') Short lived rennaissance.. That did not stop her from basically saying that her forwards did not show up for the NCAA final game. "Our attack players have really performed for us with a number of goals that they have scored for us...This was not one of their better showings...I think we had a great run all season and just really did not perform today.". Maybe this was not one of the better coaching showings. Wake played extremely well; defense stifled Duke. I am not sure that the forwards even got many touches. I recall no corners until far into the second half; in fact, Duke was perilously close to setting an NCAA Final Four record with only two corners for the game. Why? Must have been the forwards. Right? Against UNC in the first game, the team didn't show up (“How you can be really casual in a game like this is beyond me, but there were definitely people who were casual in that second half, and we let them back in the game."...We had a good game plan for this game, and people did not take responsibility for their roles, and this is what happens,” ) Against MSU in the first game, it was the freshman goalie ("You put a kid in a no-win situation, that is what is going to happen,”).
Lesson number one: shut up about your players in public; they do their best, they play their best; they are college kids trying to play and get an education. Take one for the team Beth, it will help you and Duke in the long run. Lesson number two: if you can't say something nice about your players, say something nice about the other team and the other coach (maybe something like Averill has had an amazing string and hats off to her and wow the Wake players were very impressive). Lesson number three: it is not about winning, it is about building character, respect and fairness for you, your team and your university. As for the vaunted goals per game that was oft quoted in the NCAA Final Game (leading the nation in goals per game average), subtract the goals from Davidson (13), Radford (10), Kent State (10) and Towson (12), the average becomes much more mundane. Best wishes to the Duke players; a great bunch of players and a great bunch of kids.
OK, I am now mellow and ready to enjoy the offseason.

Something does not quite fit in your comments. I am curious, because there is good and less than perfect in any program, Duke, Wake, UNC and Md included. Senior day at mid-season during Radford and Davidson--kickerback weekend? Maybe, but not usual. Duke, probably like any school, has senior day on the last home game of the season. That would be the Virginia game and not Radford and Davidson. To my knowledge, the four seniors started on that day. If true, hats off to Beth on that one. If you are taking to the players, you must know. Is your comment accurate? A simple yes or no would suffice. Four seniors quitting before the season? Maybe true, but there were four seniors on the team. Did Duke really have 8 seniors coming into the season? Again, possible but somewhat unlikely. A simple yes or no would suffice. I only raise questions about the statements because if there is not honesty in the analysis and in the commentary, no one wins. In the end, the only thing that I care about is a bunch of young women from each school competing their hearts out without interference or commentary or criticism or public analysis from adults (parents and coaches). It is a sport not a career.

Yes she didn't play. EVEN after being assured that she would play. Yes 4 seniors quit.
One correction, it wasn't senior's day it was parent's weekend, my fault.
I completely agree that honesty is needed on this site. I refuse to slander. I am only trying to make light of the situation that existed this season at Duke. I agree that the girls should not be look down upon at all. They are all great people and deserve the utmost respect for their talent and dedication to the sport.

Hockeycoach
Don't confuse debate with respect for field hockey in the US or for Duke or for what the Duke coach has accomplished. I do hope that you come to the US. I can guarantee the quality of life, the spirit of debate (however untidy it may be at times--hey look at British Parliament which we consider a bit uncivil; don't they hiss and yell at each other) and a desire for all to improve on and off the field. Alas, I cannot guaranty the conversion rate between the dollar and the pound or the euro. I guess you will just have to buy your groceries with dollars if you move here.
As for equal opportunity, I truly hope that is available for all. Note that the final four teams all had male assistant coaches. Not sure, however, I could name a single male head coach of a Division I program in the US. We have this habit here of trying so hard to be fair to compensate for past unfairness that sometimes we appear to be unfair then and now. That is said with humility and respect for a shared goal of fairness for all. A pence/shilling for your thoughts!

Quality reply.
Thanks for the insight.I know the system needs more female coaches,in all sports. Its just frustrating at times being denied opportunities despite appreciating the long term goal.
Innuendo u seem quite clued up: Anyone propose a super league( ie 8-12teams) ie the top teams playing in a particular league against each other.Say home and away fixtures, then the top 4 head to finals wkend. It seems some of the top teams coast through the early stages and fall early on when it matters.Constant exposure to a high std of opposition is required week in,week out.I'm not sure how practical this would be as the distance b/w colleges would be a factor. This would translate into less matches, more quality.Or do people need to feel 'special' because they won 10nil against some 'small' team.

Phil Sykes - Albany (I think)
It's too bad more men don't move from the assistant ranks into the head coaching spot.

Does a male Associate Head Coach count as head coach? I believe one coached in the recent NCAA Division I tournament. Can anyone remember the name of the team? Or the coach?

male coaches
When was the last time a women coached a men's team in the NCAA??? Maybe there only a handful of men...but get over it! When there are TRUE opportunities for women in the male dominated sports, then we'll talk. Besides...If the guys are such good coaches, why aren't they involved in men's hockey?

Yep its just you
Touche on the point about women in male dominated sports.
Your other point;what men's hockey?
Do me a favour do some research;tell me how many ladies teams had a female head coach at Athens 2004,then tell me which of those teams did well? Are men better with women, possibly within context. In my experiences,I've met few female coaches who I felt got the 'job done'.As a general rule-whoever is best for the job, should get it.Women rights, great and I'm all for it.There is a reason why some teams are consistently finishin in the top(4-6) NCAA Div 1.Outside input maybe.Hmmm,i wonder?
Lets not beat around the bush-lets tell it like it is,allowing more male coaches probably translates into allowiing more foreigners into the system.Lets see, improved playing stds, quality of coaching & improved player performance-that would be dreadful b'cos that means those appointed for life, might not have jobs anymore.
Its the classic, keep it in the family scenario.

Do MY homework? What do you mean "what men's hockey"? You obviously have a hockey background, are a male, and from another country. So you tell me what men's hockey there is. In THIS country, we have a national team and many good club programs.
As far as the Olympics: Just because the teams in Athens were coached by men doesn't mean that women are not capable...only not CHOSEN! MEN are hugely responsible for making decisions (both here and abroad). There are MANY excellent women coaches..both in the US and foreign. I'm not about excluding coaches from other countries. I'm just trying to keep opportunities for women alive in the male dominated world of sport. Don't try and fool anybody by saying women aren't capable...that's always the argument used by men to keep women from the best jobs.
And let's face it, when women were paid a pittance for coaching at the highest levels of hockey, no men wanted to be involved as head coaches or especially as assistants. Now all of a sudden women are getting a decent salary, men are coming out of the woodwork to get involved! The Olympics are no different! Now that womens teams are more visible and coaching is more lucrative...guess what...the men want the jobs!
Believe it or not, I DO agree with you...let the best PERSON get the job, but lets have a fair playing field to start with!

What is typical in the US is that everyone MUST be placed into a grouping... If it isn't a grouping of 'Person A's people' and 'Person B's people' then it goes to a gender thing. If it doesn't end up as a gender thing, it ends up as a racial bias. When will that ever end? Here's an idea for coaching in the US - quit worrying about whether or not someone has a male, a foreigner, a foreign male, a person of colour, etc. Enough already. You have that Title IX law for equity, not empowerment of a group. Nine times out of ten, no matter the profession, it is still who you know that gets the job anyway.
How about using certifications. The rest of the world does. If you're in posession of a certification, then you are qualified - END OF STORY.
To the best of anyone's knowledge, there is only one FIH master coach in the US.
