The semi-final line up of the Challenge Cup was finally concluded on Saturday when White Hart beat Sliema Hs 2-1 thanks to a golden goal from David Agius in the second half of extra-time. White Hart now face Rabat Depiro on Sunday at 9.00 am, while the second semi-final, at 11.00am, will see Poiatti Qormi take on The Hunter’s Tower Restaurant YS.

Sliema Hs should have killed the game in the first half, when, besides scoring the opening goal through Simon Baldacchino, they created a good number of scoring chances that they failed to convert. White Hart came more in the game in the second half and in the final twenty minutes were the better side and deservedly equalized five minutes from the final whistle. White Hart remained the better side during extra-time. They could have closed the game during the first half when they were awarded a penalty stroke. Reno Cremona, (back with White Hart after his two match stint with Champions Rabat), saw his penalty stroke saved by Mallia. White Hart were not to be denied however and half way through the second half of extra time David Agius hit in the golden goal from a short corner move.

Veterans Festival

The Hockey Association recently also organized a Hockey Festival for Veterans that saw the participation of three teams: the HAM selection, Gens Italica from Italy and Members H.C. from the UK. The Festival produced two days of good hockey with Members H.C. deservedly emerged as winners displaying some neat hockey all the way. Besides playing hockey, the visitors were treated to a number of social activities as well as excursions to various localities. The local Association is convinced that this festival can become an annual event in the local hockey calendar.

Club Development Seminar

On Sunday the Association organised the first Club Development Seminar. Manuals and CDs were distributed before hand as all those concerned with the game, players, parents, coaches and administrators, met to discuss how clubs can become stronger, what they could do and how to do it, priority issues and how different countries may have tackled similar issues.

Weekend Fixtures

Besides the semi-finals of the Challenge Cup, this weekend will see the start of two other HAM Competitions. On Friday, the 9-a-side League will start with the match between Sliema Hs and White Hart; while on Saturday the U-17 league will start with Poiatti Qormi facing The Hunters Tower Restaurant YS and Sliema Hs facing San Anton.
