Bangladesh Friday celebrated its first triumph in international hockey when its team won the Under-21 Challenge Cup defeating India 3-2 here.
It was also Bangladesh's first-ever victory against India in any hockey tournament. The win came through a tiebreaker.
Bangladesh custodian Zahid Hossain produced a brilliant display of goalkeeping by foiling two Indian attempts in the tiebreaker.
Zahid also denied India a sure victory as he saved a penalty stroke just two minutes from the long whistle.
Bangladesh, beaten 1-3 by India in the league match, was a different outfit from the very start of Friday's game as they began in an attacking mode and put India on the defensive.
The Challenge Cup tournament, which began in the Bangladesh capital Sep 30, featured five countries, including the host. The other countries were India, Afghanistan, Myanmar and Oman.
Local government minister Abdul Mannan Bhuyian distributed the prizes. State Minister for Sports Fazlur Rahman and the hockey federation chief, Air Vice Marshal Fakhrul Azam, were present on the occasion.
