India recorded their second successive victory in the Challenge Cup under-21 hockey invitational tournament when they handed Oman a 4-0 defeat at the BKSP yesterday.
Sanjay put India ahead in the seventh minute although a spirited Oman did well to contain their awesome opponents for the rest of the first half. India however put the result of the lop-sided contest beyond any doubt by scoring three more goals in six minutes after the break.
Gurinder made it 2-0 in the 52nd minute while Pawan and Mayur added a goal each in India's late rally.
Meanwhile, Afghanistan, the favourite punching bag in the five-nation meet, finally scored their first goal of the tournament after being run ragged by Oman and Bangladesh in their first two matches.
Having conceded 47 goals including a 30-0 demolition at the hands of the hosts, the Afghans lost 5-1 to Myanmar in the day's first match at the same venue.
Abdul Wakeel scored the consolation goal for the war-ravaged country, which has resumed to play hockey after a gap of two decades.
Myanmar's victory was shaped by a hattrick from Tun Tun Win, who scored his three goals inside the first 16 minutes. Aung Naing Win and Tun Tun Oo shared the remaining two goals.
Afghanistan take on mighty India at 9 am today at BKSP while Bangladesh are pitted against Oman at 3.30 pm at the Maulana Bhashani National Hockey Stadium.
