LAHORE: The 19th National women hockey championship will be played here from April 14 at the grassy field of railways stadium but the organisers failed to find a sponsor to patronage the event. The reason of holding the event at a grassy ground is as both of the plastic pitches in the town are under the use of senior and junior hockey teams which are preparing for important assignments at home and abroad.
The details of the championship were unveiled at a news conference by the President and Secretary of the Punjab Women Hockey Association, Dr Bushra Mateen and Parveen Sikandar Gill here Wednesday. Both were of the view that despite their efforts no business house has shown interest to financially support the championship which will be organised at a cost of Rs 1.4 million.
They said the opening match between Lahore Colours and Faisalabad will be played at National Hockey Stadium and the final will also be played at the same venue. Bushra Mateen defended holding of the championship at grassy track and said it will help teams belonging to far flung areas to show better performance as such teams have no past practice on the synthetic surface.
The participating teams have been placed in four pool whose formation is as under:
Pool A - Railways, Sargodha, Quetta (W), Peshawar (C), Hyderabad, Karachi (W).
Pool B - Karachi (C), Rawalpindi, Mirpurkhas, Quetta (C), D G Khan, UGC.
Pool C - Lahore (C), Faisalabad, Azad Kashmir, Bahawalpur, Larkana, Peshawar (W), Pool (D) Sukkur, Lahore (W), Multan, Islamabad. Railways will defend the title which they won at Karachi last year defeating Karachi Colours.
