Pakistan field hockey captain Mohammad Nadeem said he had decided to retire from international hockey after his side finished fifth in last month's Athens Olympics.

"I have decided to retire from international hockey after my team finished fifth at the Athens Olympics which was not the desired result," Nadeem, 28, told AFP from his eastern Pakistan hometown Gojra.

The mercurial forward is to announce the decision formally at a press conference in the eastern city of Lahore later Friday.

Pakistan, three times Olympic and four times world champions, failed to qualify for the semi-finals of the Athens Olympics after losing to Germany and Spain in group stages.

Nadeem, who played 285 internationals, said Pakistan was an inconsistent side at the Olympics.

"We did not play to our potential, one day we were annihilated by Spain 4-0 and the other day we rocked Great Britain by eight goals which is not ideal at international level," he said.

Nadeem was made captain of the team in 2002 and played two Olympics, two World Cups and seven Champions Trophy tournaments in his career.

Pakistan will now have to find a new leader for their eight-match home and away series against India later this month. Pakistan will also host the six-nation Champions Trophy in December.

nadeem
its a shame, i always enjoyed watching him play - very stylish and skillful player, always looked like he had a lot of time when he received the ball, and who can forget hisgoal against India in the 7-4 amsterdam match?

I hope he wasn't forced to retire prematurely due to the dutch coach who kept him rolling him on and off...

NOOO!!
What a shame.
Nadeem is a delight to watch. Fantastic skills & pace....hope he reconsiders his decision. He has a lot of good hockey still left in him.

I also feel Atif Bashir left the international scene too soon.

Surprise Retirement
This is quite a surprise, Nadeem is young and could have played for another three to four years. He was the most experienced forward in the team and without him Pakistan will have even more problems with their forward line.
Nadeem (Known as ND) never rose to the status of a star but he was a good player. It is sad that he is leaving the field without winning any major title. It now opens up the opportunity for Waseem to lead the national side.
Good bye Nadeem and good luck Waseem.

Reconsider !
I hope Nadeem changes his mind about retiring as he has still a lot to offer in terms of experience .I can appreciate his dissappointment at Pakistan perhaps not making the semi's in the olympics ,but, he should put that behind him and perhap's look to the next world cup .

Sometimes , the pressure of captaincy can hamper a player's personal performance .If that is the case , perhaps he should only give up that responsibilty to Waseem and still be a important member of the team.

If injury is the reason for early retirement , then, it is a pity as he has contributed a lot to hockey .

Best of luck to Nadeem.

We need Nadeem
Its a sad day for Internation Hockey. Nadeem is a great player. Its too early for him to call it off. He still has lot of Hockey left in him and to ispire young team mates. I have always liked to watch Pakistan's Hockey team palying on the field be it against India or any other team.

I hope he will reconsider his decision.

sorry for tahir
i have just learned that they have fired tahir zaman. which reaffirms my belief that PHf is being run by a bunch of morons, especially brig. mussarat. and who is he being replaced with , Asif bajwa of all people (ker Lao gal). I guess the PHF believes that a good player can never be a good coach and a good coach can never be a good player. Now they have hired bajwa who managed to waste his own talent over the years, and is now set to waste others. this is unbeleivable.
the PHF has been Promoting junior coaches to the senior level, starting with samiullah, it didnot work and its not going to work . But as long as Mussarat is there, god bless us all.

Great Player and humble servant of Pakistan Hockey. The ''european'' style of hockey is very difficult at international level for players aged around 30 plus. ND's performances in England this summer suggested he still had a lot to offer the team and although disappointed with the inconsistent performances of the team at the Olympics he should stay on and consider his position after the Champions Trophy in December.

I've seen Nadeem play several times, in Belgium/Holland/Germany and in the UK, the first time I saw him he was a joy to watch such great skills and more so his slick passing. I wish he'd waited as he definitely had a few years in him, but if its to be then good luck to him after an impressive career with Pakistan. I'll certainly miss such a talent, one of my favourite players - coming from an Indian.

Great Player
A very skillful and very talented player. Its always treat to watch him. Who can forget his goal against india in last year CT. He is leaving to eraly, but i think he has some good oppertunity so he should avail those. Pakistan hockey will miss him in the years to come.
He has a great sence of hockey. He blended asian and eropean style of hockey very well which is always reflected in his game.
Good Bye ND.
Best of Luck for your futre.

This is really sad to see a great player leave the game prematurely. I really hate to see you go ND.. but if thats your decision then we the nation stand behind our hero and captain. May Allah bring you more success in years to come and you be instrumental with all your knowledge of the game to the youngsters that are aiming to play with the same finess as you did.

ND only leaving international hockey!
I think he did not make up his mind about leaving international hockey over night. He suggested that long before with the afternote he wanted to make some money before completely leaving hockey. I think it is a comprehensible decision, as hockey players in Pakistan do not earn enough to save for future years.

He has not left hockey; he just left international hockey and will play league hockey in Grmany. I wish him all the best.

As someone suggested, his back hand got against India in CT was really brilliant... I am happy having seen such a fantastic goal :)
