Australia's Olympic gold medal-winning men's hockey team is considering pulling out of December's Champions Trophy tournament in Pakistan because of safety concerns.

Hockey Australia is monitoring Federal Government warnings urging Australians to avoid all non-essential travel to the country because of fears over possible terrorist attacks.

Senior hockey officials say Australia's involvement in the Iraq conflict is also being taken into account.

Australia has never missed a Champions Trophy tournament in the 27-year history of the event.

But team member Nathan Eglington says some players are concerned.

"It has been talked about and there are some guys who are saying they don't think it's the right idea to send a team there," he confirmed.

"As Olympic champions we have automatic qualification for the World Cup, so it's not like we have to go and qualify or anything like that."

Hockey Australia chief executive Lyndon Adamson said he had asked tournament organisers in Pakistan for details of their security plans for the event.

He warned that any decision to keep the Kookaburras at home would not be taken lightly.

"We've never missed a Champion's Trophy," he said.

"We are obviously now Olympic champions and have a responsibility to world level events and we will take that responsibility seriously, but [we take] more seriously the safety of our playing group and our staff."

Olympic Gold Medallists soft!
Obviously you didn't watch much of the Olympic campaign if you are calling Aussies soft, and hown many times would you like it to be reinforced across all sports year in year out that Aussies are not soft. Where did you say you were from? And anyone who comments in this manner would be deemed by many as very soft.

I would consider it an educated decision by educated people if the decision is made not to tour. A bit like our Champion cricket team of late in making an educated decision in regards to a tour.

Unlike yourself we respect people who can make the hard decisions.

Giving in to terrorism !
I think the australian team should go for Champion's Trophy because terrorist could just have easily affected the olympics ,where the players were not detered possibly by the thought of missing out playing in the ultimate goal of all sportsmen/women ,that is ,playing in the Olympics .

Does playing in the Champion's Trophy have the same appeal !

Anyway , I'm sure India would not mind given the chance to replace the assies !

India wont mind at all
India wont mind at all in coming to Pak to play the Champions, both as a show of solidarity with Pak as well as to show how overblown all those concerns are. Everyone knows what a great job Pak did in hosting the India-Pak cricket series. It was a total success and also helped highlight how friendly the real Pak people are. Arm chair critics who have been nowhere near the subcontinent are the ones raising all these issues. India in fact should support Pak's hosting plans regardless of whether they get to play in the trophy or not.

Pretty disappointed to here this... It had been on the cards for a while. But by not going it's going to effect this kookaburra team, not on the hockey pitch, but by how we are percieved by other nations. Having said that, you can't deny the risk. australians aren't the most liked people around the world. and i squarely blame our prime minister john howard because of this.

it's worth mentioning a number of the aussie team have gone to europe...signed contracts and are probably getting paid good money to play the game. can't see the likes of livers, schuby, dwyer, mouse, woody etc going...

I think we have to bite the bullet. send guards...do whatever it takes. think about what you'd be missing out on!!! a chance to play in Lahore! wow!!

it is quite humourous reading the comments here.

Comparisons with cricket, being soft, politics etc.

I think the comparisons with cricket are stupid as cricket has more money to spend on security than hockey does, and because of the lower budget, hockey will be more at risk. On the other side of that is the fact that hockey is not that popular worldwide.

Indian and Asghar Khan - you'd be pretty happy if the team pulled out as that is the only way that India would ever get to compete at the top level these days.

Concerned Aussie - a lot of people dont like aussies cos your accent sucks.

It's not up to the players, it up to the government. HA then make a decision on their recommendations.

We want the aussie to participate !
Hockey no Hoper !

I wrote it will be a pity if the Aussie's give in to terrorism and decline to participate and never implied that I hope Australia declined so as to open the door for India to take their place !!

Further ,yes, India is going through a lean patch ,but , I am sure they will bounce back as their is a lot of talent in India , unfortunately , IHF organisation is the basic root of all problems.

Soft or not.....
I can understand the Aussies concerns about travelling to Pakistan after recent events however it is all of responsibilities to continue our lives and not let terrorism curtail our existance. If the aussies are thinking of pulling out for socio-politcal reasons then they should also take the responsibility for raising the issue with their government over why this is a problem.

I believe it is a problem because of the stance of their government alongside the US in a war which has never been about the story given to the media. The whole issue is due to our increasing willingness to believe what we are told via the media and by fighting those we do not understand as opposed to trying to understand.

with Aussies
Your life comes first before anything. Aussies are a target of the terrorists, many of whom reside and get suport from Pakis.
Aussie civilians have been killed in Bali and Jakarta. They have every right to decide for themselves where they want to send their team.

What a load of hysterics. There we go again with the security pallaver. THe Aussies did it for Greece and the OG as well. They are partially responsible together with US and UK for Greece's overspending on security. In actual fact they should pick up the tab if they require extra security. It was not Greece or Pakistan that wanted to change the world order. Besides their attitude is butter to the bread of the terrorists who love to see people chicken out and be enclaved in their own countries. If you believe to be citizens of the world you must stop this at once and find the way to be part of it rather than abstain. This is your call to sport, like your troops had their "call" to Iraq and elsewhere.

Kookas want Pakistan tour
September 15, 2004

KOOKABURRAS captain Brent Livermore says the Olympic champions are keen to go to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy hockey tournament despite the national body's terrorism concerns.

Hockey Australia (HA) has yet to commit the national men's team to the six-nation tournament in December with the government advising against non-essential travel to Pakistan.

HA chief executive Linden Adamson said yesterday that last week's bombing outside the Australian embassy in Jakarta and reports of Australians being kidnapped in Iraq demonstrated Australia was a target for extremists.

He has sought more information from organisers about security arrangements in Pakistan and said the team won't go if HA is not convinced it will be safe.

Livermore said today the team wanted to go to Pakistan, a country he regarded as the true home of hockey.

"I've been to Pakistan four times, and enjoyed great tournaments over there. We get huge support, huge crowds. It's just a real good eye opener.

"The guys are all willing and really want to go. It's an opportunity to continue the good run."

However, Livermore said the decision was not up to the players.

"It's out of our hands. I don't think we'd have a say if we go or not," he said.

Livermore was speaking at the Sydney welcome home parade for the Australian Olympic team, with his team still basking in becoming the first Australian men's hockey side to win Olympic gold after 30 years ranked in the top four.

Livermore said he would be disappointed if they could not participate in Champions Trophy, an event in which the Kookaburras have won 20 medals since 1978.

Defender Liam de Young shared his captain's desire to play in the hockey-mad country.

"I'd really like to go, hockey's really big over there," Young said.

I think Pakistan should also consider boycotting upcoming cricket tour in Australia. I think Australia is also a considerable target to terrorist attacks since they are heavily involved in causing the rampage in Iraq with the US.
