GCC hockey team began defending the Farfan & Mendes title on a bright note, defeating last year's runner-up Old Fort 4-0 in the opening game at the GCC ground, Bourda, Monday.

Dwayne Scott tucked in the first goal in the first half, with Phillip Fernandes, Steven Fernandes and Anthony Solomon claiming one each in the second half.

The tournament continues today at Everest ground, with the home team, Everest Hikers, meeting Police from 16:45 hrs.

Everest's line-up will have Timothy McIntosh and Devon Munroe while Police will have Paul Liverpool and the McCalman brothers.

The umpires are Paul Archer and Troy Peters.

Meanwhile, Everest Thugs emerged the winners of the Warm-up Indoor Female competition, beating Old Fort at the National Gymnasium 1-0 on penalty flicks.

In the John Fernandes second division tournament, GCC and Old Fort played to a 1-1 draw, with Stuart Gonsalves scoring for GCC and Askofu Simon for Old Fort.

Everest and Police also played to a 1-1 draw, with goals from Timothy Jonas for Everest and Dean McCalman for Police.

In the third match, which completed the first round, Askofu Simon hit three goals for Old Fort to edge out Everest 3-2. The goalscorers for Everest were Shane Samuels and Robert Fernandes.

GCC started the second game with a 3-0 whipping over Police, with a double goal from Kevin Spencer and one from Orlando Semple.

Old Fort edged out Police 2-1 with goals by Simon and Adrian Brandt. Quincy Kalem scored for Police.

Everest needled GCC 1-0 with Robert Fernandes scoring the lone and winning goal.

GCC went down again to Old Fort 3-2 with Dwight Sullivan hitting a double and Mikail Smith one for the winners. Patrick Edghill and Kevin Spencer scored for GCC.

Old Fort lead the points standing with 13, followed by GCC ten, Everest four and Police one.

Rene, I see Stephen is still a very good friend of yours, judging by his conservative estimate of the scoreline :-)
The first GCC vs Everest clash is on Mon. 23rd.

I am making my predictions based on reports from a reliable source in Guyana. Skill Axe Bell is apparently on top form, judging from his brilliant hat-trick against police recently.

Historically Everest always plays a stifling defence and counter-attacks with speed and flair.

Watch out for "The Addict" he always seems to lift his game a HEAD or two against GCC!
