There are 45 thousands people working as volunteers at these Olympic Games in Greece. And perhaps none is more passionate about their involvement as volunteer than Mary Michailidis, a first generation Greek-American from Stamford, Connecticut.
A mathematics department head and teacher at Stamford High School, a public school in Stamford, Michailidis began as a coach at the high school in 1988, took over as head coach two years later and won a state championship in 1999. However, she had to step down from coaching in 2001 because she was appointed head of the math department and the school principal did not want her continuing in both positions.
In Athens, Mary is an Athletes Services Assistant at the Olympics Hockey Center where she greets the teams, always with a warm smile, escorts them to their locker rooms, answers any questions, and makes sure they have what they need including water and powerade. After the matches she escorts the teams through the media zone and then ultimately to their transport back to the Olympic village.
It was an easy decision for Mary to offer her services for the Athens Olympics. “It was easy for me to decide to volunteer because I have had this love of Greece since I was a small child,” says Mary. “My mother would bring us back to her homeland often and then when I reached an age that I could do it on my own...I did. I am fluent in Greek, so that also helps.” Mary’s mother was born in Argos and her father hails from Kalamate.
A two-time all American in field hockey at University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, Mary’s involvement with these Olympics goes far beyond these games. Upon finding out about the existence Hellenic Hockey Federation, she originally faxed her resume (CV) to the HHF with the intent to help in any way as volunteer. To grow the sport in Greece, she then forged ahead with her desire to volunteer coach at first at the club level and was told that there was a club team named Artemis in Argos, her mother's hometown. “I went there and found the coach and he immediately embraced me with open arms.” The following summer in 2000 she started working with the national teams.
And since then she has been to Greece seven times as a volunteer for the Hellenic Hockey Federation helping the two then newly hired Head Coaches first, Pancho van den Broek (NED) and later, Cedric D'Souza (IND). “I was like the jack of all trades for them. I provided some coaching, some umpiring, some team management, some translation, and a lot of knowledge from my 25 years of hockey experience.” Mary worked predominantly with the women and occasionally with the men. However, once the women’s team was abolished, her focus completely shifted to the men’s team and their Olympic qualifier matches in Madrid. “I was there as support staff and major fan!”
Even thou very excited and happy overall with the Olympics being back where they began, Michailidis feels very sad and disappointed that there are no Greek national field hockey teams in these Athens games. “I am very sad for all the Greek athletes who tried their very best to qualify. It is unfortunate there are no Greek national teams representing Greek hockey here. The men played well enough in Madrid to have been allowed to compete here. They truly reached an acceptable international level. This is not a good thing for Greek hockey in the long run.”
“I do not know who sat at the table at the meeting that created this qualification criterion for the host country for the 2004 games and ultimately agreed?” Laments Mary. “I wish I could have been there to object from the get go.”
“I also wish that the HHF had had a more structured plan from 1997 when they were awarded the games. I believe that there should have been more help from the FIH to ensure that they [HHF] knew what it would take to reach the appropriate international level. That is, to not be left out of the Olympics as hosts. It is a well known fact that Greeks are a proud people and perhaps they should have asked for help much sooner too.”
It is hard to disagree with Michailidis given the few recent blow outs in the men’s competition, the very reason given by the FIH, the world governing body of hockey, for not upholding the Olympic spirit at the birth place of the Olympics. Additionally, it is also very hard to believe that a Cedric D'Souza coached team would’ve become a whipping tool for all.
Mary got her start in hockey by chance. An ice hockey and soccer fanatic as a youngster, she wanted to play soccer as a high school freshman, but when she went to try out for the boy's team - that's all there was - the coach “recommended” that she go play field hockey with the other girls. She wound up being a High School All-State (CT), and later two-time College All-American at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. “Needless to say, I owe him a lot,” says Michailidis of her good fortune.
Mother of two boy; Panayiotis "Peter" 12 yrs old and Andreas "Andy" 10 years old, Mary also keeps busy umpiring hockey at high schools and colleges, running the Ultimate Field Hockey School and summer camps, and playing for Malvern Field Hockey Club of Brooklyn, New York.
Now in Athens, Mary feels that her whole field hockey experience over her lifetime is coming together. “Actually it is more like the cherry on the sundae because I have had such a tremendous experience; USA, Greece, and now internationally. I am in Heaven with this opportunity to help the some of the best teams of the world compete in this fantastic tournament.”

Thx to Mary
Thanx 2 Mary in the name of all Greek players - she always was a big support for all of us and she can speak out of our hearts when talking about the unfair political decission to not let the host participate for the first time in the history of the game. I hope she will stay close to Greek hockey in the future too!

For Mary and the rest of the volunteers
A big thank you to all the volunteers, the best asset of the Olympic games and in expand to hockey as well. They shut all the mouths of the doubters who even just a few hours from the start of the games they were certain that the Greeks will fail in a big way. I would very much like those that employed mockery in their arguments for months in these forums to come out and offer their apologies. It will be the least they can do for the great way that Greece treated them and the efficient way of all operations. I have seen many tournaments run by experienced in hockey countries and I can tell you that nothing can be compared to the games in Athens.
As far the non-participation of the Greek teams especially the men I wish all the decision makers to think again and look inside themselves and their conscience. They must be feeling very uncomfortable but no guts to say it. After all how much worse than the Egyptians the Greek team could have been. Unfortunately a golden opportunity was lost and will be haunting everyone involved and letting things happen as they did, from both sides EHF and FIH. I heard that in the original negotiations with ATHOC the experts of FIH set as minimum requirements for 5 (five) pitches to be there. Two main and three warm ups but settled for four of which they only used three, the two main and one warm-up. Funny that in Sydney they had only one main pitch. But the ignorance of the Greek organisers was their worst adviser and so they gave in to FIH's demands as in the case of the qualification pallaver.
My Chinese friends beware off the FIH echelons when they visit you, but I am sure you will be wiser than us soft and inexperienced Greeks.

Mary and the volunteer
Yes Mary was a very nice woman among all the nice volunteers who have been involved in the success of the olympic games. But I must also prize all the volunteers which have been involved in this events and who did not have the chance to follow the matches. I remember an (english ?) lady who was sitting in the corridor of the main building of the stadium and who was checking the access-rights to the others floors. She was so kind and smiling and had always a delicate word for everybody. These games were really a great experience for all of us. And the hockey matches were very exciting to follow. Concerning the remarks of Zeus, I read in the greek news papers that the international press apologized for their doubts, so they have been fair and let us close the quarel.

no spectators
After this awful behaviour of the FIH to the Greeks they shouldn't go to the hockey stadium in Athens O.G. and leave the stadium empty(except some Indians and Pakistanians).
It would be a super shock for FIH and its president. Thus I.O.C. should be very angry with FIH and its president. it should be your revenge...
I'm from Sweden and i can't imagine my country to host O.G.and has no represantives in some sports(like hockey)

Greece
Greece did a fantastic job with the olympics and hockey. Well done. Most of the world was sceptical about the greeks ability to complete things on time which was well founded, as they had to overspend by 6 billion US dollars to finish construction by getting non-greek firms to finish the job. SO in a sense there is truth to the scepticsim. Its also significant that greece had to look beyond its borders to find a large proportion of the volunteers.....also a significant pointer to the fact that Greece needed outside help.
As for their national team, I believe the decision to leave Greece out in the cold in terms of standards of hockey was correct, although it undoubtedly did not help grow the sport in the country. However the fact remains that Greece did nothing to develop the sport themselves and relied (again) on outsiders to be able to put together a team. Qualification criteria were set a long time ago for Greece as they were for the African qualifier (Egypt) who needed to win the All African Games to be able to compete at the olympics as one of the five olympic 'rings'.
It is also significant that the much lauded national Greek team (Zeus and co), were no where to be seen in athens. They could have pushed their point home by making themselves available as a warm up opponent for teams to play against, but obviously it would have been too expensive to fly their players from all around the world (as most of them are from other countries). If they had held their own in the warm up games, they would have won more support but instead have chosen to whine on and on on these forums.
Lets stop pretending that Greek Hockey was well run and supported prior to the olympics...thats hogwash.
The Olympics will not grow Greek Hockey, Greece will grow Greek Hockey!
Notwithstanding the above, Well done again on a great event.

Sorry but...
Sorry,my friends i don't want to upset you but you are not a serious sport.Greek scandal and the behaviour of FIH showed it...Those things are for laughing...That's why hockey is an unknown sport to the most of European countries...change your minds before it's too late...For example in Sweden when we see hockey as an olympic sport we are laughing, noone is interesting seriously. What your federation(FIH) is doing about that?
And if the Greeks had no develop as you say what FIH done to help them?
They said no matter let's eliminate them to play another team...seems to be very funny...It'a a pitty cause it's a beautiful sport
Well done again on a great even?
Can you tell me the number of the spectators in hockey matches in Athens?(except Pakistan and India matces),i didn't watch all the sports on TV but i'm sure that were the fewest from every sport there.

Do I see an effort, while you feel it is justified to say that wrong comments were made for Greece before the games, at the same time you still try to qualify yours and others pre-Olympic miserable comments.
Projects to international firms: Greece is a member of the EU and by right all tenders for projects have to be procurred international and the award goes to the best bid.
Volunteers: We have some 5 million Greeks living all over the world and they were only too glad to avail themselves, the total number applied for from Greece and abroad was some 125000 against the 60000 needed.
The only argument that I will give you credit for is that for the team not made available for warm-up games with the teams that were arleady in Athens. It would have costed nothing as most of our international players were there to watch the games at their own expense. This was a gross mistake of the HHF and a wrong way of expressing disgrunt and discontent to FIH.Bitterness should not prevent you from seeing the right thing.

Answer to HockeyFan
Thank you for your kind words about the organisation of the Olympic Games in Athens, but I understand that your information is wrong about the Cost of Olympics and the non-greek firms that finished the job!!!!
The Cost started 4,6 million Euros and have reached 8 million Euros due to the high quality of the games and the extra cost of security after 11th September.
The appointment of international firms was based mainly on the argument that experience from past Olympics should be used, such as for SECURITY which was the BEST EVER (I would not spend words to refer to ATLANTA etc), and of course POLITICS (money should be spent internationally).
So you should understand this is not a matter of ability to finish a project in a small country but politics.
I understand that as many apologies as written in the Americas and British newspapers to the Greeks for their accusations before the Olympics, there is always a scepticism to the minds of those who cannot understand how such a small country like Greece had successfully completed the BEST EVER OLYMPIC GAMES!!! (DREAMED GAMES)
My dear friend, the reason is that above all, Greeks have proved worldwide what is the Olympic Spitit and Hellenic Hospitality. In this respect I consider all Greeks as OLYMPIC CHAMPIONS for the hospitality during their Dreamed Games and Olympic Spirit they have shown.
Regarding the Greek Hockey Team, although the fact that no greek team participated, the stadiums were full and in any other country there might have boycotted the games.
This did not happened here because every body in Greek Hockey knows that the blame is not full against the FIH.
My opinion is that both FIH & HHF did the great mistake to agree on qualification games for the Greek National Teams, each one for their own reasons I believe.
Everybody in the Greek Hockey Community, should think now, AFTER THE GAMES, how this matter was handled and critisise, not only FIH for their decision, but also the HHF about their wrong attitude, decisions and mistakes, bad organisation and whatever comes on the scene.
Therefore, I would not blame only FHI for the qualification games imposed for the Greek National Teams, but above all the HHF who, although they have done a tremendous mistake and accepted the qualification procedure, they have presented a very poor organisation and did not support the greek hockey athletes as much as they should during their preparation for the qualification.
Finally I want to stick on the specific article and point out what Mary Michailidis said, which is very-very important.
" I also wish that the HHF had had a more structured plan from 1997 when they were awarded the games ".
IN MY OPINION THIS IS THE TRUTH AND THE REASON WHY GREEK HOCKEY LOST THE TRAIN FOR THE OLYMPICS.
The above words from Mary Michailidis, give all the truth.
If a Duch, Australian or German coach or even CEDRIC or any other good coach was in Greece from 1997, if the athletes were properly supported with all kinds of tools and assistance from HHF, then you would see that Greek Teams (at least the men's team) could have passed the qualification games. But athletes were left alone having a coach and an assistant trainer only during one year and half who did more than their best, but miracles are not hockey business.
ALTHOUGH GREEK HOCKEY PLAYERS IN BOTH TEAMS TRIED TEIR BEST AND ESPECIALLY THOSE WHO LEFT THEIR COLLEGES FOR TWO YEARS AND SPENT THEIR TIME IN THE PITCH SHOULD BE TREATED AS HEROES, BUT THEY WERE BETRAYED FROM THE POOR ORGANISATION OF HHF AND IGNORANCE FROM FIH.
Yes my friend, HOCKEY FAN, whoever you are and whatever nationality you have, you are ABSOLUTELY RIGHT!!!!
GREEKS SHOULD NOT EXPECT ANYTHING FROM ANYBODY, IT IS GREECE WHO SHOULD GROW GREEK HOCKEY!!!!
AND IN THIS CASE THE GAMES FOR GREEK HOCKEY WERE LOST BECAUSE HHF DID NOT KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT HOCKEY, NOT EVEN HOW TO DANCE SYRTAKI!!!

PER,
I don't understand very well your remarks "they shouldn't go to the hockey stadium in Athens O.G.". Because the games are finished, now. And during the match with Pakistan, India, Holland, Germania, Australia, the stadium was full. And the atmosphere created by all the spectators ( especially the pakistanese and the indians ) was wery friendly and joyfull. Now, I hope that the stadium will remain available for Hockey, because all the hockey players of Greece need stadiums ( until April 2002 there was no stadiums) . Unfortunately, I heard that maybe they will use these stadiums for football !!!

Don't be stupid. First Paris has not yet got the Olympic Games. And we such fanatic comments, they will never take them. Then, when you take the responsibility to organize the olympic Games, you take the responsibility to organize all the games which are chosen by the IOC. You cannot replace "Hockey" by "Belote" or "Petanque" ( For the people who don't know these games "Belote" is a typical French Games of Cards and "Petanque" is a typical french game with balls ). And if the French Federation does not want to take the responsibilty to organize the hockey games, let us ask to the Belgian Federation. They will be very proud to take them in charge. But let's hope that if Paris get the olympic games, the French Hockey Team will be strong enough to qualify ( note that if Egypt had not won the African Championship, France would have been ranked 12th in the Qualifying tournament to the Games 2004 in Madrid and should have played against....Greece . And if Hockey become a key issue in the choice of the Olympic city, give the Games to Madrid or London, there will be no problem.

At second i know that Paris has not yet got the O.G.,i said IF PARIS take 2012 O.G.

The French team is not bad despite the fact hockey is not popular here, but also we are not a strong team and nobody can risk to play preliminary matces,if we'll only have a bad or unlucky match, maybe will be a disaster. In sports nothing is for sure.
I've no relations with the French federation, but is 100% for sure and belive me that if we'll make the olympics they won't accept preliminary matces ...
And even London took the Olympics,if you think that the British will accept this(despite that is sure that they will qualify)you are very wrong

I AGREE WITH FRENCH FAN BUT EASY TO SAY AND DIFFICULT TO ACT
I consider reasonable the anger of a citizen of any Olympics Host City if the hosting country national team was eliminated from the games either for hockey or any other sport.
In this respect I may agree with French fan, but his proposal is very difficult to imlement, considering the filoxenia and Olympic Spirit that the Greeks tried and succeded to inspire in Athens Olympics Games.
The point is that as Greeks we should not blame only FIH but the decision of our National Federation to accept the proposals of FIH. If from the beginning they have protested and acted immediately, the result would bedifferent.
I believe that not any other National Federation would even dare to accept any proposal from FIH for qualification matches.
THAT WAS A VERY STUPID DECISION FROM HHF and after they dropped crocodile tears because they were excluded from Olympics and went to CAS.
The problem is now huge for the Greek Hockey, because the sport was actually vanished from the media (TV etc) and nobody has given interest since IT WAS THE ONLY SPORT IN ATHENS WITH NO GREEK ATHLETES.
All greek newspapers were writing that there are not greek national teams and everybody believes that the sport is not present in Greece, although there are more than a thousand athletes and more than fifteen clubs in Athens, which amount is good for such a small country.
Unfortunately the idea of converting the hockey stadiums (actually there are two big ones and two training pitches) to other uses such as for football or exhibition centers
is getting serious ground and I am afraid this is the final kick for the disastress for greek hockey to vanish before even appear.

Hockey in Greece
My opinion, as a veteran of Greek Hockey, is that OLYMPIC CHAMPION is absolutely right. The Greeks who love hockey either veterans or newcomers should take the situation very seriously and start a big debate regarging the future of the sport in this country. There is a potentiality from the young athletes and some clubs who are doing a very good work but this is not enough.
IF THE CHAMPIONSHIP IS NOT SERIOUS THEN THE SPORT WILL REMAIN LOW.
The Greek Federation until now had the Olympic Games and the effort of the National Team for participation as an excuse for very poor championships, the last one STARTED IN JUNE 2004 AND LASTED THREE WEEKS ONLY!!!!
COME ON GREEKS!!!
WAKE UP, SOME PEOPLE IN THE GREEK FEDERATION UNDERESTIMATE YOUR POWER AND ABILITY TO REACT!!!
COME ON CLUBS AND THOSE WHO ARE CLUBS OFFICIALS!!!!
YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE AGAINST YOUR ATHLETES AND FROM NOW ON FOR THE GREEK HOCKEY IF YOU REMAIN AS SPECTATORS ONLY!!!!
COME ON ZEUS!! IT'S YOUR TIME NOW!!! EVERYBODY IS EXPECTING SOMETHING FROM YOU!!!

Fight for Hockey in Greece
Right Hockey veteran ! The development of hockey will go through the clubs and from the youngs. Let start all the championships ( senior, Junior and younger) in October and all the teams (and the players) will really find interesting to have games nearly every week end. Also the stadiums will be used. For getting young players, go in the schools. Hockey is a sport for skilful, quick and clever players, and you don't need to be a giant for playing ( see the no 1 of Australia) because there is no physical impacts during the matches as in Rugby, Handbball, football or Basketball. But I don't agree with Olympic champion. It is good to make rules for qualification even if you are host country, even if they are aliviated from the ones of the other teams. At least you can raise the public interest in your quest for qualification over a longer time than 2 weeks. Tell me also what help give the participation of a baseball greek team in the olympic games for teh development of this sport ?

But you are right we scrapped the bottom and we have to start from scratch but to start as soon as possible. We know that we can do it provided that the bleemy politics are set aside although I am not that sure. I hope that I will be proven wrong. As far myself is concerned I know that I am dedicated to hockey and I want to see it shining in Greece too. I have no doubt that the rest will want that too. And believe you me money is not always the problem, but the right attitude. Let for once prove that the Greek attitude, the one we showed during the Olympic Games, is the one that we will follow in hockey from now on.

É don't agree with you about base-ball.During the O.G. too many people in Greece were interresting about base-ball despite the fact that it was an absolutely unknown sport and despite the hysterical anti-Americanism of Greeks.(the sport is absolutely American)
The stadium in the Greek national team matches was full of spectators and nobody seemed to be upset by the fact that the Greek team won only one game(from seven games)
One of them who were interesting was me and i'll continue to interest in the future and i think other people will do the same think.
About the future, you must also know that the Greek team is not a team only made for the O.G. but was the second team in Europe on 2003 and have qualified for the world championship of 2005.At this time almost all the players are Greek-American but in the future more and more Greek players will play in the national team cause the federation and some clubs do very good job, especially in the youngsters.
So if the Greek state keep alive at least one of the two base-ball stadiums the future of base-ball is bright.
The only problem is that the Greek press and channels don't occupy with these unknown sports but this fact don't prevent other sports like for example water polo to be successful.
About hockey, i'm not a expert but my oppinion is that the absence of the national teams was a destroy for the sport here, cause it was the less-interesting sport for Greek people and the Greek press.Very few people were interesting and learn something about hockey. And that's the big different with base-ball.
Of course the decision of FIH (for the Greek teams) was awful and and shows how arrogant they are, but i also must to say that the Greek federation is not serious and its president Kostas Tsogas has no idea about hockey cause-as i have read-he comes from karate !!!!
Anyway i wish the best for your sport and i will watch its proccess.

TO ZEUS, HOCKEYVOLUNTEER & GIORGOS
It does't matter who I am and who you are, but what does matter really are the opinions and the vision. Considering what you write I am quite sure that you suffer as me also from what recent years had happened to greek hockey which does not remind old times.
I FULLY AGREE WITH YOU TO KEEP POLITICS OUT, BUT DONT YOU BELIEVE THAT THE ORIGIN OF THE TROUBLE WAS EXACTLY THAT?
Did you see what happened when the present minister of sports tried to do with EPO and how FIFA had immediately reacted? Does n't this remind anything to you?
In my opinion there are people in Greece who have spent a lifetime in hockey and are dedicated to that and help greek hockey from any position either they are HHF officials or not, while some others although responsible for the sport in this country do nothing about it and sometimes use their position for personal promotion.
On the other hand I am well aware of people who entered the sport recently and have a vision to see it shining again like you and further improve.
At this particular time for greek hockey, since, as you said very precisly, we have scratched the bottom anyone who is not a part of the solution is a part of the problem.
I agree with hockeyvolunteer that the skills required for a hockey player are quite different to those required by football, basketball, rugby etc which include physical contact. This is in my opinion the characteristic that diversifies Hockey from these sports, the reason that hockey is a noble sport which improves the mentality of the athletes which mainly use their brains instead of their body during the match.
I agree also with Giorgos that it was a very bad thing that greek national teams did not participate to O.G. for the sport but also for the athletes themselves, but the there is always time to correct mistakes if there is hope and vision. I personally dont like baseball probably because I dont know the sport, and I would not change hockey for any other sport, especially for karate.

What made me very happy was the recent camp of veterans organised in Agios Kosmas.
I have to congratulate the people who have inspired, organised and covered this event, all of us know who they are and everybody knows that HHF was absent.
But it doesnt matter since there is nothing to expect from these guys any more and above all there is no harm left to do.

HHF SUCKS!
I have been playing hockey for 3 years and i have never seen anyone from inside the HHF doing anything to help the National team qualify,i haven't seen them trying to help clubs built a pitch so that they can practice,i haven't seen them trying to held a decent championship...now that i think about it i don't think i've ever seen any of them at all!
Where is the HHF or someone from the board when teams play in championship?
Probably lying in their comfortable armchairs thinking about how they are going to make more money in the name of HHF and how they will use them for their own benefit...
What i want to say is that HHF doesn't care about the sport,we,players, just think that nothing can happen and so everyone lives with it but what if we try to show to HHF and anyone else that doesn't really takes us serious what we are made of and act instead of talk...?
I think that something can be done to prevent hockey from beeing that miserable, here in Greece,in the future and help all that young players play a noblle sport instead!
GREEK'S MUST NOT LIE UPON HHF BUT IT'S US,THE PLAYERS,WHO LOVE THE SPORT HELP IT BECOME GREAT AND PLAY IT AS IT DESERVES TO BE PLAYED...!

NO LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL!
Unfortunately nobody cares, my dear Alex about the situation.
During private discussions all realise that the situation does not go any further with HHF but NOBODY DARES TO DO ANYTHING.
NOBODY FROM THE CLUBS OFFICIALS HAS THE GUTS TO STAND AGAINST THE HHF PRESENT OFFICIALS!
You know why?
Because many of them are involved in one or another way in what in Greece is named "DIAPLOKH". Because many of them have in one or another way involved in the problem either with their support of with their silence. In case somebody stands bravely and refuse to "co-operate" HHF has the power to destroy such a voice and make it silence.
On 10th October (next Sunday) there will be elections in HHF, ALL OF A SUDDEN!!!!
HOTEL TITANIA (PANEPISTIMIOU 52) 20.00 HOURS.
DOES ANYBODY BELIEVES THAT SAME PERSONS WILL NOT BE ELECTED AGAIN?
WHO IS GOING TO STAND UP AND POINT OUT THE DISASTRESS THEY HAVE CAUSED TO GREEK HOCKEY ALL THESE PAST YEARS?
THE ANSWER IS OBVIOUS. NOBODY AND YOU KNOW WHY?
BECAUSE NOBODY HAS THE GUTS!!!!!!
WHY HOCKEY PLAYERS DO NOT COME AT TITANIA HOTEL ON NEXT SUNDAY TO SEE AND LISTEN WHO IS WHO, AND MAKE YOUR OWN MIND?
JUST FOR A START!

HHF
The HHF is a miserable organization- and if I were back in Greece I would certainly try to do something about these elections. The HHF has no consideration for their players- they had no problem disrupting lives- making promises, and then cutting the ties loose without any notice.
If the HHF had handled their training camps professionally and with intent to improve, then both the men and womens greek teams would at least become accomplished, even if at a small level, it would be a start for developing hockey in Greece. Their communcation to their players and coaches was awful- the players went days without hearing from the HHF about any news or developments.
The current HHF members have no desire to improve hockey in Greece- they're in it for wrong reasons- Greeks need to Elect and whole new board to run Greek Hockey- people that would actually want to see Greece suceed in the sport. I think Mary Michailidis would be an excellent start- she could bring forth a great deal of change and improvement. She gets my vote, and continued support.

I WOULD LIKE TO INVITE ALL THE PLAYERS OF BOTH MEN AND WOMEN NATIONAL TEAMS
TO BE PRESENT AT THE HOTEL TITANIA ON THE 10/10/2004 AND AT 19:00. AS SHOULD ALL SHOW THEIR PRESENSE AND DISAPPOINTMENT TO THE HHF FOR NOT HAVING THEIR TEAMS PARTICIPATE IN THE OLYMPICS AND THAT THEIR PROMISES WERE JUST WORDS AND NOT ACTIONS
IT IS A DISGRACE THAT THE SAME BOARD IS TRYING TO GET REELEKTED AND HAS NO SHAME AND DIGNITY AS TO TREIR PARTICIPATION.
THE VOICE OF THOSE WHO THE HHF HAS STEPPED ON THEIR BACKS HAVE THE CHANCE TO BE HEARD AS MEDIA WILL BE PRESENT TO COVER THE EVENT.
IT IS ABOUT TIME THAT EVERYONE LEARNS WHAT HAS BEEN GOING ON AND THAT THE SACRIFICE FOR TWO YEARS DAILY ON THE PITCH WAS PAYED BY THE TEAMS BY NOT PARTICIPATING IN THE OLYMPICS AND THAT THE HHF HAS STILL THE NERVE TO GET REELEKTED

I am very proud to see that all people in Greek Hockey who love and enjoy this sport have at last been awakened.
I am very proud to see that the athletes are now demanding what they deserve and believe that Clubs Officials will definitely stand up against those people who had the responsibility to keep the Greek Hockey at a certain level but used the sport for their own promotion.
BUT MY DEAR FRIENDS BE CAREFULL !!!
IT IS NOT THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE ATHLETES TO PARTICIPATE IN HHF ELECTIONS!!! IT IS THEIR RIGHT TO PROTEST BUT THEY SHOULD NOT INTERFERE WITH THE ADMINISTRATIVE ASPECTS AND OFFICIALS SHOULD NOT HIDE BEHIND THEM!!!
WE ALL KNOW ABOUT THE "MONKEY" CLUBS AND IN PARTICULAR THERE ARE A LOT OF THEM WHO SUPPORT THE PRESENT HHF PRESIDENT AND GENERAL SECRETARY. THESE "MONKEY" CLUBS ARE ON PAPER ONLY AND MOST OF THEM NEVER APPEARED ANYWERE IN THE CHAMPIONSHIPS.
THE MINISTRY OF THE ATHLETICS IS ALREADY AWARE OF THE SITUATION.

I just saw the article about the elections and so i couldn't come but if i could i'd sure be there...
Hockey Veteran you are so right but there is nothing that i or you can do on our own, we need more support from other greek players,we need to awake more persons.
Why don't we try to tell all these to a practice of the national team and see who cares?
I will be practicing this Saturday at Agios Kosmas, whoever want's to contact me about it can send me an e-mail at katerinadj@yahoo.gr.
Hope i'll see many of u Greeks there...

HHF ELECTIONS - NEW PAGE FOR GREEK HOCKEY ??????
The elections in HHF proved that the situation cannot change.
Same people have been elected and President Tsogas and his "paper" Clubs proved too strong for few brave voices heard as a critisism with strong arguments and vision for the sport.
As I heard some of them were really to the point and it seems that serious guys start entering the sport however there was not enough support.
Unfortunately some guys were really negative and this did does not help anyway.
Some other guys have finally decided, at their lates, to co-operate with HHF. I wish they have done the right thing and help hockey from "inside", but they have now "double" responsibility, and NOT ANY EXCUSE THAT THEY DID NOT KNOW WITH WHOM THEY FORM STRATEGIC ALLIANCES!!!
Anyhow, been reticent for the result and hoping to be proven wrong, I wish to invite ALL GREEK HOCKEY PLAYERS AND CLUBS OFFICIALS TO THIS CHAT.
Nevertheless the above, we have to discuss problems and make proposals although we cannot do much on our own.

Hockey for Children
Hello Chris and Mary !
I don't think that "ola ayta poy grafete einai paraloga", because what writes Chris concerns mainly the national team. I think that for developing Hockey we should start by the Children ( Pampaides, Paides, say Ephivi ). Our club invited schools to free training lesson and many seemed interested. But you cannot motivate children if they never play a match in a championship.
In Athens there are around 10 clubs which can present a team of 6 players, as we use to play in Greece. We should allow some clubs to present more than one team, as that happen everywhere in europe. Because, if you have 15 Pampaides in your club, it is diffcult to have each of them playing . So you could have Vias 1, Vias 2
The championship is not difficult to organize. In Agio Kosmas we can make two matches at the same times, playing perpendicular to the main stadium. We can have 2 Matches on saturday ( from 15:00 to 17:00), and 4 matches on Sunday ( from 10:00 to 14:00). With this system, each team will e able to play every week end, and the championship could last 4 or 5 months. May be some will object that the federation has not enough referees of officials. But, for this level, the older players could act as referee, and the match sheet could be filled by the coachs of the two teams. This is how it works in North of France, from where we are coming. That needs volunteers, but we saw during the olympic games that we can find volunteers. So , let's go on

Development of Hockey in Greece
Bravo Pierre! This is a very good idea!
I think in Greece we are fed from typicalities in this sport. Lets make things easy, in order to fascilitate the development of the sport. Although I do not agree spliting the clubs to various teams (1 or 2), because in my opinion the spirit of the club should be united, there is a solution on that since hockey does not have restrictions for the number of players to substitute, thus all boys and girls can play in one match. What really maters is to play and enjoy the sport.
I fully agree with you that the interest for the sport especially for the young boys and girls may be lost, in case there is not a championship in progress for a long period. Championship should not be a couple of months fag during summer, but a real lonlasting fiesta which would make players happy and attract new players inerest to the sport. To my opinion the Greek Hockey Federation should consider a different approach and take measures to upgrade the Chamionship.
If a proper approach and organisation involves volunteers and why not, some extra cost for the clubs this has to be also taken into consideration in HHF plans.
Another idea is to organise indoor hockey toutnaments during the winter time since for the very young boys and girls it is rather difficult to play outdoor hockey in open pitch at low temperatures and if raining.
Anyhow whatever decision has to be made by HHF this has to be done quickly within next two months so that not only new players do not lose their interest but also the sponsors.
LETS PLAY HOCKEY!!
